Newcomer / Intro New Player Question

Hi All,
Just got the game after thought trying something new, did the tutorial, now a bit stuck, what do i need to be able to start mining and what do i need for it?? Is the any quests that can help you level up mining or doesn't it work like that??
Also when would you recommend joining a corp/guild/soc being such a new player or is there ones out there that specifically help new players in learning the game?

Regards

Most Squadrons (player groups) will help newbies with whatever they want to learn. Some focus on mining.

Theres no specific training in-game, there are training missions from login menu but not sure mining is one of them. Cant remember whats under Right Hand Panel - Codex - Pilots Handbook but try there first usually for info

Basics / Essentials, most under Mining modules in Outfitting:

Refinery - bigger ones have more 'bins' for different minerals is all.
Cargo hold to store refined minerals.
Mining Laser for surface mining - point and shoot when close enough to asteroids.
Collector Limper controller, more limpets mean quicker collection, plus limpets (universal use) bought separately from Advanced Maintenance, some people have 2 CLs for even more limpets

optional - for quicker / easier finds and more credits per hour:

Pulse Wave Analyser to see better roids and for core mining
Prospector limpet controller to get better info about individual roids
Abrasion Blaster - to get the surface blobs of minerals (cant remember correct name for blobs but look like barnacles found at the seaside, not on every roid)
Seismic Charge Launcher - for deep core mining of only certain roids, blows roids apart from inside exposing more blobs, best combined with pulse wave analsyer to find these roids but can be done by sight as have fissures on them, but they are rare to find
Deep Surface Scanner (DSS) - to scan asteroid rings and see hotspots and what type - used in SuperCruise before dropping out, can also map planets with it
Sub Surface Displacement Missile - for drilling into cracks and mini-game to get bigger chunks of mineral

Any roid will give minerals until depleted so doing it blind with only basic modules and mining laser is OK just not anywhere near max profits, but its all free cash once equipment bought. Can do in any ship but more cargo space the better for less running back to station to sell. Different belts eg Ice or Metal Rich give different minerals, check in SysMap if after something specific.

Edit: PS Hve fun and welcome to the game :)

That all depends on how new you are and what resources you have available?

The absolute bare minimum you need is a Mining Laser, Refinery and some cargo space.

A basic equipped laser miner will have a ship large enough to have a Refinery, Lasers, Collector Limpet Controllers to collect the ore, a Prospector Limpet Controller to check the rocks and a Deep Surface Scanner and of course cargo space for refined materials.

As for help, I can answer questions but am too far out into the black to give any other help.

As Tyres said - there are no levels (in the game) for mining. All the levelling you're going to do is by learning how to mine "better" - whatever "better" means for yourself.
As for joining a player group or a squadron - whenever you fell like it, for as long as you like. At least from my point of view. Ther may be player groups that expect/demand a higher level of commitment - but I wouldn't know about them, never was a member of one of these (if they exist at all).
One of those dedicated to help new players you just found. The other one (with more in-game presence) is prominently linked at the top of this page. And this more or less describes the operation of most, if not all player groups: they operate outside the game. Discord and reddit are popular for that.

Back to mining: tell us which ship you got now and how much money you can afford to spend. With the smaller ships, you'll necessarily be restricted to one type of mining at any given time (laser, subsurface, core) due to the lack of hardpoints. Also, there are no small seismic charges (core mining equipment), so you'll need a ship with at least one medium hardpoint if you want to go into core mining.
Apart from that, and not considering funds (you can get an Anaconda or T-10 within maybe 20 mining trips, starting from a Sidewinder), larger ships (with more cargo space) will permit you to go on longer mining trips.
Just one thing: as long as you mine within range of the Bubble (i.e. inhabited space), you will get a couple of clowns (i.e. levelled to your combat rating NPC pirates) showing up whenever you drop into a ring. That includes after a relog. As long as you only have limpets in your cargo, they will send over some negative remarks, then leave you alone. Not necessarily a big issue in a well equipped T-10, but somewhat problematic in a T-6 or a Keelback, so make sure you don't relog into a ring at any point whith some mined resources in your hold.

Hi guys. Sorry for bothering with this question, but I'm new here.
If I've been using a Python for months, but my son want to use a Viper Mk3 instead of my Python (he is a beginner) where could we found a mission for Mk3?
All of the targets are much higher levels. Is there some option for this?

It sort of depends on the mission really: none are ship specific.

They will be for transport of information, cargo delivery, combat etc. etc.

The Viper III is really a combat craft so you'll want to find a combat mission and check what rating the mission is for. Given you're both new, you'll want ones targetted for "harmless" rank and there's no rules to say there will be such ones available at the time you look. You could wait for the missions to refresh if you're dead set on a combat mission, however...

As you/he are new, combat is quite tricky so I would suggest you look for a "Resource Extraction Site (Low)" to practice in. Here's a tool you can use to look for such sites http://elitedangerous.hozbase.co.uk/bountyhuntingsystems/nearest?system=diaguandri&distancely=25

There is a link to "Key" near the top of the page that helps.

Once in one, you can follow the system authorty vehicles around and shoot after they start shooting. Only hit the bad guys! Things will go bad if you hit the cops :D

Also, you'll want to equip your viper as best you can and engineer it if possble. It really helps.

And welcome! @@@07

Hi guys. Sorry for bothering with this question, but I'm new here.

Hello & welcome. Dont be afraid or apologise for asking questions, thats what these forums are for :)

Try a Massacre or maybe Assassinate mission if he wants to do combat full on. Then can choose from Nav Beacon or graded Res Sites or the actual mission signal which will have groups but not necessarily Wings so can attack one at a time. NB has weakest enemies unless Compromised, Res Sites have grades from low to Hazardous which will define rank of expected enemy mainly and whether police will help out or leave you on your own. Can even follow the police around and wait until they attack someone and then join in.

Either way if you / he not carrying Cargo (limpets excluded, carrying them is not a problem) nobody will attack you usually until you attack them. Which means you choose which enemy you take on in the first place and how to initiate combat - from behind and above for best initial advantage.

Massacre may even be civilian non-combat ships but police may not like it if civilian and not a Pirate (mission description). Often just target an 'enemy' faction.

Assassinate is a specific target and expected rank needed (experience) is stated in Mission description and if they are Politicians etc they may have combat escorts / wings.

Can take on any 'Wanted' ships for bounties if not mission focussed. Can choose whether to take on single ship or those in Wings.

Can also try Data Delivery missions, will usually get 1 NPC at a time interdicting and attacking you, but they are scaled to rank of mission not your rank - meaning the rank of the account holder even if son is playing and they will attack you first if you don't attack them.

If not bothered about lawful / unlawful activity go to Anarchy system and fight anybody in any ship, civilian or combat ship, with no legal consequences.

Check rank of NPC in bottom left after basic scan completes for an idea of how good the AI will be and whether they will have engineered or more powerful weapons.
