Anyone mind helping a newbie out? With just some general tidbits of gameplay, I was struggling so hard to figure out docking just now it felt really sad that it took me that long to understand. Im new too, played for a few hours and blew up someone who was trying to interdict me. all was glorious 
For the stations that you dock inside of i find it helps to fly away and try to approach straight on. When your trying to put the ship in place make sure to tap your keys, don't hold down.

It also helps to deploy landing gear on your way in - your ship restricts speed when the landing gear and/or cargo scoop are out, so it helps. Also, in the options, there are hotkeys to set your speed to 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 0%, -25%, -50%, -75%, and -100%. I put these on my number pad, and use -50% after I burst through the entryway at 100% speed, but you probably don't want to do that until you've been playing for months like some of us have ;-)
