Newcomer / Intro NEW PLAYER

Hello, I'm new to the game and seem to have trouble locating Mawson Dock. Can someone help me out?
I restructured your request to include how we're supposed to communicate with people. :)

But my query is in regard to mining. Can anyone inform me (preferably without a video) on the basics of mining? I have a mining drill and a refinery aboard.

First rule of mining never arrive in a ring with anything other than limpets in your cargo, otherwise you are likely to be attacked by the almost inevitable pirate who arrives just after you do.
Second rule of mining if you restart the game for any reason while you are in a ring with refined cargo on board start running immediately and go and sell your cargo as the pirates will show up.
Third rule of mining never mine in a Resource Extraction Site, they may be the easiest way to arrive in a ring but they are full of pirates if you do arrive in one wait for the first scan and then fly about 20kms away before starting to mine.

With those basics plus a cargo rack aboard fly to a ringed planet and manoeuvre so that you approach with the ring looking like a circular disc as you get closer slow down eventually you will get pulled out of cruise, if slow enough without damage.
Line up so you can see the planet and head towards the nearest rock in its direction deploying your mining laser when you get in range for your mining laser as shown by your HUD fire it to knock a fragment off the rock targeting that will tell you what is available in it, if it is something you want scoop it.

This basic technique is in one of the training/tutorials available from the main menu and right hand panel in your ship.

To make it a more efficient process add:-
  • A Prospector limpet controller, fire a prospector at a rock and it will tell you what you can get out of the rock but will increase the yield especially if you fit an A rated controller.
  • Collector limpet controllers, collector limpets fired without a target will return fragments until they time out, no scooping required. As they gather everything be prepared to target stuff you don’t want using the contacts menu and add it to ignore this will stop the limpets filling your refinery with stuff you don’t want.
  • More mining lasers, to feed the limpets.

Seriously though, great post, aRJay. :)
If I may add my comments, the one thing a good miner needs is patience. It takes time - scan/probe each 'roid one by one, get a feel for what is good in the rocks (or icebergs). Just seeing - say - LTD's in a rock is not enough to start lasering; look for a rock with a good concentration and decent volume. Over time, bypassing the lesser 'roids and zapping the good ones offers a much better yield - but it's REAL hard to not unleash the lasers the moment one sees the desired mineral in any quantity.
Take it slow, take it easy, and above all - because of what aRJay describes - DO NOT leave your instance unless you're either abandoning the run or you are filled up. That's where patience really pays off. It can be frustrating: low yield, low yield, low yield, low yield...then you hit a GOOD patch and your limpets have TONS to eat.
