New players are accidentally playing the Legacy version

I've come across three streamers new to ED who were accidentally playing the Legacy version. Once they were informed in chat, they then had to download the Live version so they could play the intended version.

There should be better messaging to new PC players that two versions exist. The installer should install the Live version unless explicitly told to do otherwise.

It is plastered all over the launcher - if you select (highlight) a legacy version there is a whole screed warning you:

Somehow it is happening. Not sure how. :) I've seen three streamers with the issue myself, along with others mentioning their friends who encountered it as well.

I think certain streamers new to the game should probably review their basic skills, such as reading, and paying attention to what they are reading...

We do see quite a number of new players in EDO around the starting systems... so no idea if that is a common "problem".

In my company we refer to this as a 'Replace user issue'

Nice of you to help them out

I suppose they could add extra warning pop-up bixes saying something like "warning, you are about to play a no longer supported version of Elite Dangerous, would you like to continue, press no to load the live version, yes to continue to the legacy version," but then I imagine people would complain about that also, that FDEV were trying to push people away from the legacy version.

giving the old-man-on-duty spiel: I would say it happens due to the average streamer's reading disability and lack of attention. Especially the "reading paragraphs longer than three words thoroughly" part gets more and more out of fashion, and attention spans aren't what they used to be .

Huh… I wonder if it’s related to downloading and launching from Steam? You don’t have to click through the FDev launcher so you wouldn’t necessarily see any of the warning people are condescending about. But they’d have to have only downloaded legacy, don’t know how that would work though.

And how exactly do you think they should fix this "problem?"

It is not "condescending" -

When you select play from Steam (library or desktop shortcut) - that opens the Frontier Elite Dangerous launcher.

There surely can be no excuse for not seeing the warning I posted above. Unfortunately it would seem that some streamers don't know what they are doing.

Hm, when I select play it opens the launcher but immediately starts E: D without me having to click on anything in it… at least when I start in VR. I don’t remember having to do anything in the launcher in normal mode but it’s been a bit and could be wrong. Could be they started in VR. Could be they missed it or clicked through without thinking, as you said.

Hmm, when I click play it opens the launcher where I can select between Open, Private Group, Solo etc, I select one if them and then the game starts. Switches can be attached to the launch command specially in VR where you don't have easy access to the keyboard, so that you don't have to select options when it launches, makes it easier for VR users I guess, but normally yes there are several option possible to take once you press play.

Even a player clicking into legacy horizons, as per the above screen, will normally have the same options after clicking play, to select Open, Private Group or Solo etc.

And I can confirms, having once been a computer support person, clicking through screens without reading them is normal behaviour for a very large percentage of computer users.

Maybe there is a command line in use with their shortcuts (like your VR). ¯\(ツ)

Like what the ninja @varonica says. ;)

If I run Ed from Steam, Steam asks me if I want to play normal or VR mode. If I select VR, the launcher autolaunches into Odyssey and VR. If I select normal, Steam opens the launcher and I can select which version I can play. I would have assumed it is that way for everyone minus the VR stuff?

Edit: The Epic launcher behaves different - it always launches into Odyssey, closes the launcher and re-opens it when I exit the game.

When you buy from Steam there is absolutely no reason to care for another launcher. I click through these proprietary launchers everytime. Most of the stuff written and featured is just marketing guff anyway. Not worth any time. If I knew how I would bypass these launchers.
You buy on Steam a specific product. There is no reason to have yet another page come up and choose what you want to play. That decision was made when buying the game. ED launcher is redundant.
Same as the account with ED. Why would I need just another account when I already bought with Steam. FD could use Steam authentication service to verify ownership, but I'm no legal expert and maybe there is some mumbic legal reason to have yet another account.

Not to speak of what when you lose access to your email-account registered with FD. I sit here with a steam purchase and an FD account I cannot access the email I once registered with. And if iirc you had to give them, address as well. What for? It's really unneccessarily complicated.
