They need to put naming in with transfers that are coming. Example for needing this is I have 2 Cutters usually parked at Founders. One is set up for cargo and delivery missions (was my Sothis/Ceos Runner at 70 million profit per 1.5-2 hour trip) and the other is my primary pirate ship. I need to make sure if I call one of them that I am calling the right one. I can tell which one is which if I am in the ship yard as I have them as different colors, but with transfers they really need ship naming.

Grey text on a black background?

Also not sure this required a new thread on ship naming...

You can see which ship is which by their specs/loadout. I assume it's fairly easy to tell the difference between a piracy ship and a trade ship.

(not saying I don't want naming, btw)

The problem is that the only screenshot that they have shown for the transfer mechanic did not show you being able to look at a ships specs to identify it. It showed the ship location, cost of transfer, and class of ship

Would prefer the mechanic actually provides the stats for the ship (eg jump range, shield mj, etc) as this would be more useful than naming a ship. The delay means, that requesting the wrong ship is.. not ideal.

Beside the fact that I am a friend of naming my ships I believe here you are having a luxury problem. I wish I could afford one Cutter. But I see the problem and an
identifier what is what can e.g done by Paintjob if FD delivers the picture to the ship. Other ideas to identify them are also welcome.

Miklos

You can tell which one to choose by reviewing the load out of the ships. Choose the one with the correct equipment loaded. Ships are always listed by their costs, so you can use that as an indicator. The question is: How do you do it now? Maybe you could keep doing that way?

It is more than a luxury problem as it could be a problem no matter what ship it is. But it is a utility problem with any 2 ships that you might have that are spec'd for different tasks

I do it now by looking at the ship color as I have a different color for the 2 Cutters. The problem is by the 1 screenshot they have shown we might not have access to the info we need to make sure we are choosing the right ship so the way I do it now may not work when choosing a ship for transfer and ship naming was said to be something we would get. I think this new feature adds a reason for it to be added sooner than later

I don't give a flying Sidewinder about ship transfers for this purpose. I just want to be able to name my ship and see the name on the side.

I have zero issues with FD bringing on Ship Naming. I name mine on my INARA page now. All I was doing was offering likely workarounds for the future. I can't see FD re-making the wheel. They will reuse existing material, and there are reliable methods for identifying ships now.

There is a good chance that Ship Transfers will not make it into 2.2, as it is. Ginning up more issues with the process will only delay it longer. Call for ship naming. I'm with you. Tying it to transfers just spells delay.

Necessary or not I see no reason why we couldn't name our ships. I mean even if it would be cosmetic and the ship name would be just next to the CMDR name it would be nice.

yes ship naming, and that name should be visible in the target panel:

cmdr wenkman
<some PP alliance>
FDL: the yellow ducky

How to solve your dilemma:

1. Go to Founders / summon both your Cutters where you are.
2. Take the first Cutter, and move all of the modules into storage.
3. Sell the first Cutter. Also recoup those sweet hundreds of millions. Win!
4. Play the game.
5. When you need one of your Cutter builds, transfer the remaining Cutter. You can see what modules are in storage so you know what build you will be transferring. If you want a different build, also transfer the stored modules, which you can swap when both your ship and modules arrive.

But that doesn't mean I have anything against ship naming.

I believe the OP is worried that the dev team might make the same mistake they made with the menu to engineer modules.

I mean they wouldn't make that same mistake a second time right?

i assume we will be able to see our modules/ shipstats from distance.

that said, i nevertheless want shipnaming - not sure why anybody would vote no on your poll?

I´d love to name my ships, but i want it to implemented right, with the names being used in NPC comms, probably even in special missions and be displayed on the side of the vessel. Frontier should take the time, to do it right, no need to haste - problems only occur to people who already have too much money or are in an optimizing frenzy.

Reasons to vote no: To pee off other players.
Afraid ship-naming will divert dev resources from their fave hoped-for feature or bug-squishing.

I voted yes.
