New Rift owner, could use a hand

Hi all!

Just got my rift (DK2) yesterday and have been struggling to get it working with Elite: Dangerous all evening and today. It will work in Direct access, but everything blurs and is a bad experience. I get everything set up for extended display, but when I hit accept, it looks like everything is flipped 90 degrees in the rift. Its in portrait and I have followed many of the guides available.

Is there a more up to date guide on how to get this working?

Hi Baffles,
I just got my DK2 yesterday so I recently felt your pain. There should be a setting in your graphics card program (I.E. NVIDIA desktop application) to rotate your display.

A few of the guides were really helpful in setting mine up. Most of them seem to be based on Win 7 and luckily I haven't upgraded yet so they worked for me.

I started with this one by drkaii:

Keep trying and don't get too frustrated, it's worth it once you get everything working. Also, install sweetfx, it makes the game MUCH better in the rift. And follow the instructions for changing your panel color to green. I couldn't read any text until I did that; now I can read everything easily. I used this program to easily change the HUD color:

Note: if you are using the Steam version you have to manually configuration the custom file. Search the thread for "steam" and you'll find the instructions on the second to last page I believe.

Good luck,

ValeoRex

Aye what he said!. In screen settings]put your rift in portrait with your rift as secondary display. The desktop of your PC will still look odd in the rift but that is fine.

Elite does not work well in direct so do not worry about that extended is where it is at.

If you are windows 10 I can't help you but there are ways of getting it working.

If you are using the 0.7 sdk however roll back!ci assume you are not as you talk about extended which is not in 0.7 AFAIK but do not be tempted to try it if you want to play elite

Strange, I had to put it into landscape view in order to work properly.

interesting!... do you have an AMD card? I have an nvidia one. (no idea if that makes a difference, just wondering if one of them configures the rift display differently, i am 99% certain mine is portrait!.

(I would check but i am not at home)

Beginner tip: Don't mess with SweetFX or Reshade until everything is up and running. It's just another layer of complexity where things can go wrong and it is an hacked-in layer on top of the original game just like adding a EQ can make your Hifi sound better. But you're not seeing the original game output anymore. In my very humble opinion ofcourse :) Guess i am a purist.

yeah, change your screen position in the nvidia settings if the view is sideways and go through dr kaii's thread to get the nvidia settings tips like for brightness and contrast settings. I prefer to use a brightness lower than he recommends, but other than that it will get you going. The EDDS program will let you set your HUD color to green so it looks clearer (there are physically more green subpixels than there are for the other colors in the screen).

I don't bother using reshade or sweetfx, I just use in-game supersampling. Works fine, less crap to break.
