I got myself a Rift today, set it up and fired up Elite.
I have to say I am both pleased and disappointed.
The good thing's first.
1: Sense of scale, is really amazing I mean seriously I didn't think the stations, ship's, Planet's etc were that "BIG" it is just immense.
2: Head Tracking, I tried the Ed-tracker but couldn't get use to it, and I also tried a few other devices of friends and really did not like it but with the Rift it's stunning, it's so smooth and really helps when you are tracking a mission objective like a planetary Scan Mission which is pretty much all I have done up to now, I will explain why in abit but I really like the Head Tracking.
3: The Chair, I like that I can stand up and move behind my "Pilot's Chair" and look around the cockpit, it really does give a sense of just how big some of these ships are, although I have only been in my ASP up to now, looking forward to trying it, in my Corvette.
4: No motion sickness, this really worried me as I was unable to try it before I bought one and wasn't sure if I was going to be able to use it but I can so I am happy with that.
That though is all I can say that I have found to be good about it, now for what I feel are the bad point's.
1: Performance, now my pc is no slouch at 1080p completely maxed out except AA, not in VR I was hitting upwards of 250 FPS flying in space, and when in stations or on planets I was hitting over 100 FPS, my system is an I7 7700K, 32Gb Corsair 2400Mhz, MSI GTX980Ti, 960 Evo 500Gb, I am now in order to try and maintain as close to 90 FPS having to run at a mixture of low to medium with SMAA, 1.25 SS and 1.0 on HMD, but it looks poor like really poor in the unit itself but looks fine on the window shown on the monitor, now I knew there was going to be a performance hit but I didn't expect such a dramatic drop, over 100 FPS on planets down to low 30's, over 200 FPS in space down to 80 - 90 FPS, and I certainly did not expect such a drop in graphical quality.
2: Blurriness, I really did not expect this nor did I see any complaints about text being blurred whether it's in front of you or off to the side, also planets, stations etc being blurred until you are practically within stone throwing distance.
3: Galaxy/System Map's, they are now practically useless I mean I don't know who think's not being able to use the mouse in either one is good, but having to type a system name in that is literally 20-40Ly away in order to select it, really is poor, I was not expecting to have to plug in a controller and I am not going to in order to use the galaxy map like I was playing on a console when I am on a pc, and I have seen videos etc on how to use it but it should be the same for VR players as for non VR players or at least have an option to go to a 2D map instead of a 3D map.
Now I know I need to upgrade my graphic's card at some point, which I will do when I can but is a single 1080Ti going to be able to actually run at a solid 90 FPS, in both Space and on Planets with the VR Ultra Preset or will I need 2 of them, or spend a stupid amount of money on 2 Titans?? I'm not trying to run that at the moment, because I know my pc cannot handle it.
I have not tried this in combat yet, simply because I am thinking that the FPS is going to plummet.
Maybe someone can advise on how to make it look better or perform better but currently I am rather disappointed that basically at the moment it seems to be just a tool to use only when exploring and nothing else.
I have downloaded the ED Profiler by Dr. Kaii and tried it on different settings as well.
