New Rift Owner

I got myself a Rift today, set it up and fired up Elite.

I have to say I am both pleased and disappointed.

The good thing's first.

1: Sense of scale, is really amazing I mean seriously I didn't think the stations, ship's, Planet's etc were that "BIG" it is just immense.

2: Head Tracking, I tried the Ed-tracker but couldn't get use to it, and I also tried a few other devices of friends and really did not like it but with the Rift it's stunning, it's so smooth and really helps when you are tracking a mission objective like a planetary Scan Mission which is pretty much all I have done up to now, I will explain why in abit but I really like the Head Tracking.

3: The Chair, I like that I can stand up and move behind my "Pilot's Chair" and look around the cockpit, it really does give a sense of just how big some of these ships are, although I have only been in my ASP up to now, looking forward to trying it, in my Corvette.

4: No motion sickness, this really worried me as I was unable to try it before I bought one and wasn't sure if I was going to be able to use it but I can so I am happy with that.

That though is all I can say that I have found to be good about it, now for what I feel are the bad point's.

1: Performance, now my pc is no slouch at 1080p completely maxed out except AA, not in VR I was hitting upwards of 250 FPS flying in space, and when in stations or on planets I was hitting over 100 FPS, my system is an I7 7700K, 32Gb Corsair 2400Mhz, MSI GTX980Ti, 960 Evo 500Gb, I am now in order to try and maintain as close to 90 FPS having to run at a mixture of low to medium with SMAA, 1.25 SS and 1.0 on HMD, but it looks poor like really poor in the unit itself but looks fine on the window shown on the monitor, now I knew there was going to be a performance hit but I didn't expect such a dramatic drop, over 100 FPS on planets down to low 30's, over 200 FPS in space down to 80 - 90 FPS, and I certainly did not expect such a drop in graphical quality.

2: Blurriness, I really did not expect this nor did I see any complaints about text being blurred whether it's in front of you or off to the side, also planets, stations etc being blurred until you are practically within stone throwing distance.

3: Galaxy/System Map's, they are now practically useless I mean I don't know who think's not being able to use the mouse in either one is good, but having to type a system name in that is literally 20-40Ly away in order to select it, really is poor, I was not expecting to have to plug in a controller and I am not going to in order to use the galaxy map like I was playing on a console when I am on a pc, and I have seen videos etc on how to use it but it should be the same for VR players as for non VR players or at least have an option to go to a 2D map instead of a 3D map.

Now I know I need to upgrade my graphic's card at some point, which I will do when I can but is a single 1080Ti going to be able to actually run at a solid 90 FPS, in both Space and on Planets with the VR Ultra Preset or will I need 2 of them, or spend a stupid amount of money on 2 Titans?? I'm not trying to run that at the moment, because I know my pc cannot handle it.

I have not tried this in combat yet, simply because I am thinking that the FPS is going to plummet.

Maybe someone can advise on how to make it look better or perform better but currently I am rather disappointed that basically at the moment it seems to be just a tool to use only when exploring and nothing else.

I have downloaded the ED Profiler by Dr. Kaii and tried it on different settings as well.

2: Blurriness, I really did not expect this nor did I see any complaints about text being blurred whether it's in front of you or off to the side, also planets, stations etc being blurred until you are practically within stone throwing distance.

I find the two things that make the most difference with text sharpness are 1) setting the HMD Quality to 1.25 minimum, preferably 1.5 [I leave SS set to 1.0 and AA set to SMAA] and 2) finding the right GUI colour scheme (combined with turning down the dashboard brightness to 2 or 3 pips) - I like the cyan-based ones but it is a matter of personal preference, most are better than the default orange regarding text clarity. EDIT: just to add that the HMD Quality setting will improve the sharpness of everything, not just text.

I use a HOTAS and have no issues using the galaxy map, in fact I prefer using it to the mouse even when playing in 2D.

I have a 1080 (admittedly the highest OC model from ASUS with the 11gbps memory) and it copes fine, FPS only really drops significantly below 90 when in the hangar.

Hopefully someone with a 980ti will be along to advise on settings.

7700k and 1080ti here.
I run Super Sampling @ 1.0 and HMD quality 1.5
Shadow Quality Ultra
AA - FXAA
Ambient Occlusion off
Everything else at high and ultra.

I will see some ASW artifacts kicking in on Stations when I am going down in the elevator or if I turn fast in a SRV on a planet surface. Combat and Res zones I have no issues.

Galaxy map I use my Hotas. It took a little bit to get used to but it is easy now to navigate.

I found the single best thing regarding the text was using the hud colour change and laterly using Dr Kai's excellent Hud tool. I have a condition that effects my eyes certain frequencies of red light hurt if looked at for a while. The standard Hud colour is very uncomfortable so I modded it as soon as I got the game. Changing things to something in the more blue spectrum is much better as the blur seems to be lots less. Most of my settings are eaither set to high or ultra. I have AA turned down and apart from that the settings are as others here have stated.

I currently am running mine on the same card as you to help more frame rate, another thing to do is set your game screen size (monitor) to something a lot smaller than your full screen as if your not watching it as your using the rift, it will help with the frame rate, less to render etc.

Ive found with Dr Kai's app you can switch the settings with one click if you want to go 2d etc.

Totally agree with you on the Galaxy map, untill I mapped mine to my Hotas it was a game breaker for me, now with everything on the hotas combined with the look view selection of the Rift, I only use the KB for text chat and exiting the game.

OP. Welcome to a whole new world of Elite!

Re 1) and 2)
I'm using i7-8700k clocked at 4.7Ghz and a GTX 1070. I have a pretty good experience with the following:
  • Model Draw Dristance - Max
  • Texture Quality - High
  • Shadow Quality / Bloom / Blur / DOF / AA / AO - Off
  • SS - 1.0
  • Environmental Quality - Ultra
  • FX Quality - Medium
  • Reflections / Material - Low
  • HMD - 1.5
  • Galaxy map - High
  • Terrain - Ultra
  • Terrain LOD - High
  • Terrain material - Low
  • Terrain sampler - Medium
  • Jet cones / Volumetric effects - Low

You may need to lower some of the settings a little bit, just play around until you get something that you like. If it's any consolation, it took me about a week of tweaking to get the settings I'm happy with.
Playing in Open, I sometimes get network spikes, but I'm very happy with how it looks. I don't notice any skipped frames, artifacts or stuttering. Sure the picture quality isn't as good as a monitor, but imo being "in" Elite > looking at Elite.
Re text clarity, HMD 1.5 makes a difference as does using Dr Kaii's Teal Twilight (via his excellent profiler)

Re 3) - I use mouse and keyboard for Galaxy map - you can change the mouse pointer render preference to Graphics / Display / Mouse Cursor - "In game panel based cursor". Make sure grid lines and on and select the system with "space" key.

If you're not already using it, I can heartily recommend voice attack. For me, it made a world of difference in VR.

Thanks everyone.

I spent a little more time last night and ended up with the following.

Texture Quality: Medium
Shadow Quality: Medium
Bloom: Off
Blur: Off
AA: SMAA
SS: 1.25
Ambient Occlusion: Off
FX Quality: Low
Depth Of Field: Off
Reflections Quality: High
Material Quality: Medium
HMD Image Quality: 1.25
Galaxy Map Quality: Low
Terrain Quality: Medium
Terrain LOD Blending: High
Terrain Work: Off
Terrain Sampler Quality: High
Jet Cone Quality: High
Volumetric Effects Quality: Medium

There was still some blurriness to text but not as much, and I had already changed my HUD colour to a "light Blue" prior to getting a rift so glad that is what people seem to say will help.

I will spend some more time tweaking today and see what I can come up with.

Try SS at 1 and HMD at 1.75 (or 1.5 if framerate too slow) and use FXAA for AA. :)

I would say... don't stress it. This is the way it is, and no matter how much you fiddle, it is never going to be 'perfect'. It took me a while, but I learned to just ignore it, and concentrate on the bigger picture - so to speak.

Flying through a damaged space station right now in VR is just stupidly epic :D

Well I seem to have settled on the VR Ultra Preset with a few changes, but the text blurriness and ghosting(?) seems to still be there but not as bad.

The ghosting is when I turn my head there, seems to be like "Lines" that come off the letters like rays of light it's hard to describe but I am getting use to it.

Either way I cannot wait to go and visit Sag A* and a few other places, but I am currently doing passenger missions for the Sirius permit as I got fed up with becoming "wanted" in systems because of the planetary scan missions.

Keep tinkering with the settings and youll eventually find one that feels just right! where performance and visuals live in perfect harmony!

With that in order, spend equally much time and effort setting up your hotas! I have a T16000 FCS and have full control of the ship, the scv, the complete menu and UI system as well as the galaxy and system maps.
It takes time and might require some getting used to but its def possible and much worth the effort!

Oh and btw, welcome to the real world!

First congrats on your purchase. Second, a better gpu will improve quality a lot. Next year with volta release (hopefully) there will be better alternatives to support vr. As of now I can only recommend the 1080ti for a good quality, all others seem to sacrifice too much either on performance or quality. Like others said, changing ui may improve text readin a lot. I went with green, since I fly the green manalishi corvette too lol. Try out different settings, test them on and off station (deep space), test them in a heavy bh session and you shall find a good compromise. Im on my second cv1, been through 970gtx, 1070gtx, 1080 and 1080ti. I would wait, save and hang on to get a better gpu next year.

Great advice above........

My Tuppence worth......DON'T compare it with a Monitor!!!!!! Just DON'T!! I did at first and very nearly sold my OR, i even had a buyer on the Fleabay, but last minute decided not to sell. Glad i did not now as i more and more and more wear the OR.

If you start to compare Monitor to VR, you will always be disappointed, until the 2nd/3rd/4th gen headsets come out.

Think of the OR as a different way of being 'IN' the game and not watching it through a window!

Again.
SLI DOES NOT WORK FOR ELITE DANGEROUS IN VR AND WILL NOT BE ADDED AT ANY FUTURE POINT.

Doesn't really matter what hardware you have.
There are bottlenecks in the code engine.
Particularily when you have instances with other players.

My current rig is capable getting rather stable 90fps when solo but adding just one wing member and the same area starts throttling to 45fps, regardless of graphics settings.

There's no need to shout lol.

I was talking abut the VR multi GPU support what was mentioned in the past by NVidia, not whether the game is supporting it or not, I was talking about the current state of VR as a whole.

Something that wasn't mentioned in the original post...do you wear glasses normally? I find not wearing mine when using the Rift tends to cause the blurriness of text you speak of. There's no adjustment in the Rift to help make them unnecessary, unfortunately. It is a bit more of a hassle to get set up, granted, but not impossible.

The DK2 has two sets of lenses, did they do away with this on the consumer version? I never needed to use them but it seems like a good idea for people who normally need glasses.

There weren't any extra lenses in the box. And the only adjustment I've found is the one that sets how far apart the two projectors are to account for eye spacing.

Second this advice.

On my 1070 and Rift, and my 1060 and Lenovo, setting SS to 1.0 and HMD Quality to 1.5 makes everything much clearer.

Also, both my Rift and Lenovo get blurry if I look to the side of the HMD - with today's VR HDM's you need to turn your head to look around as the sweet spot in directly in front of your eyes (this has been talked about quite a bit)

Good luck!
