New Rift user - Loving it but questions...

Took delivery of my CV1 last week, and really enjoying it. I'm old enough to remember playing the first crude attempts at VR in the arcades during the early nineties (the Virtuality games), but they weren't great, even at the time. The experience now with this Rift is just a whole different ball game though. The Oculus demos are fun, but the first time I fired up Elite and found I was sitting in the cockpit of my Anaconda was just mind blowing :)

Have come up with a few question whilst still getting to grips with Elite in VR though. I did read some of the stickies in this sub-forum, but still unsure on a few things:

1) Each time I launch ED, my position seems to be a little off-centre. I've tried F12 to re-centre my view, but it doesn't seem to do anything? I've tried binding it to a different key too, to no avail.

2) How on earth do you use the galaxy and system maps in VR? (the system map looks great in 3D, btw!). Is it easier just to switch out of VR for these, or is there some trick I'm unaware of?

3) One of the stickies talks about optimal graphics settings for VR (supersampling and a few others). However, most graphics settings seem to be unavailable in VR mode, unless I'm missing something?

4) ReShade - is there simply no way to enable it in VR currently?

Any assistance greatly appreciated :)

cheers
Danny

1) yeah I find this, in fact I'm convinced the view seems slightly tilted. You could try moving and/or adjusting the tilt of the sensor, or re-running the Rift setup. Remember when you hit F12 to be looking directly in front.

2) no problems here, though getting the blue dot to appear under/above the desired system can be fiddly. My bindings can be found here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...tly-confused?p=4216555&viewfull=1#post4216555 (these are for the T.Flight but if you have another stick you will hopefully get the idea)

3) all graphics settings should be available in VR (in fact you should have one extra: HMD Image Quality)

I've heard the Vive is really awesome too. Can someone who has both HMD's compare their experience with Elite? I've heard the Rift has a larger sweet spot but the Vive has a larger FOV. I would be interested in hearing an in depth comparison though.

1.
F12 should reset viewpoint to straight forward. It's very immediate and obvious if it's working.
2.
You have to bind galaxy map controls to your flight controls, I hope or highly recommend a hotas with a lot of buttons for vr, you could also use the xbx controller.
It takes a bit of getting used to, first breakthrough I had was to not try selecting the stars directly but the dots positioned on the map grid, using the correct zoom and camera positions is where it takes some getting used to.

3.
All settings are there. You just have use the plus sign to expand the new collapseablemail menus.
There is a binding in control for "UI expand something something".

Welcome to the club, enjoy :). (got my rift a couple of weeks ago).
Might be wrong and haven't had much time to experiment. But from memory...:
2. (For the galaxy map) it gets easier once you change the angle you view things at. Then you can see better where the blue circle is in relation to your target system.
3. You can't expand the + for the settings using the gamepad, but you can if you use space bar. Anyway, took me a while to work out how to do it as well.

You'll find your position changes each time you get up or sit down etc. Just map the HMD recentre command to something easy to get to (I use the space bar). Don't be afraid to press it a lot until you get yourself just right.

In VR, you can use the mouse for all the game menus (like the options etc, and also the left-hand window in the galaxy and system maps.

In the galaxy and system maps, picking a star using the mouse is tricky in VR. Some have it down pat, but it depends on your head angle. I can't seem to get it right. Its quite easy to pick a star miles off in the distance that you don't want. Its not a good implementation at the moment.

The best solution, as others have explained;
You'll need to map the galaxy movement controls (left right, up/down, zoom in out etc) to buttons on your gamepad, or joystick etc. The square grid will need to be visible (it is by default).
Then use the mouse or controls as you normally would, get in the ballpark of the star you want to select.
Then zoom in until you see the star on its little blue stalk attaching it to the grid.
Use the movement buttons to centre the blue selection circle over the stars grid spot and it should pop up the selection menu... you can then select it, or route to it etc.

It does take a bit of getting used to, and remapping the controls, but once you get it its at least 'easier'. But its not as easy as being in 2D.

Tell us what your system spec is (cpu, video card etc) and we'll give likely best settings.

4> I don't think ReShade works in VR. And you don't ant the added overhead anyway. Framerate is king in VR, or you'll feel ill.

Thanks for all the replies guys. F12 definitely doesn't seem to do anything when I've tried it up to now, but will try the suggestions above later this eveningfor that, and for the galaxy/system maps.

- My specs are i7 3770, 16GB Ram, GTX 970.

Figured out the F12 issue last night - I was using Headlook mode > Reset Headlook , as that was bound to F12.

By chance though, I was scrolling through the options and noticed Miscellaneous > Reset HMD Orientation , which wasn't bound to anything. So I bound this to F12 and happy days :)

Also got the hang of the galaxy map now, by binding the rotation and translation controls to my XBox controller.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, gents.

Good to see you got it worked out mate. :)

I'm on the same cpu (i7 3770K), same amount of RAM (16HB) but using a 1080GTX.

Try setting all settings to Ultra, use SMAA for antialiasing, set Blur to off, set Bloom to Off or Medium, and Sahdow detail to Medium.

With a 970 I wouldn't use any higher pixel density settings via the Oculus Debug tool, but you can use the performance HUD to see what sort of frame rate you're getting in the game as you tweak settings.

Damn I wish I had a 1080 :). Hopefully a 1070 will come next year, but in the meantime my 970 is coping much better with VR than I'd expected (especially given that Frontier recommend at least a 980).

Anyway thank you, those settings are really helpful. I did try 1.5x supersampling, but it started dropping frames right away, so quickly dialled that back again. Pretty happy with the other settings though :)

Sorry, this is OT, but are you "dannyboy" from LGK? ;)

I found that the reset HMD only works in the menus when you are not in the actual game.

It works for me everywhere, but I'm using the DK2 clone: Deepoon E2. Maybe that has something to do with it???

I have it mapped to Voice Attack, so when I say "align", it resets the view.
