Astronomy / Space New series of BBC Horizon

Horizon is nothing like it used to be, back in the day it celebrated research and innovation for what it was bloody exciting. Now its far too interested in the BBC agenda

If Derek Cooper is not on the V.O, you can keep it

I enjoy watching old Horizons. Iplayer has ones from the build up to the Moon Landings.

I enjoyed Project Greenglow. I hope these new shows continue as a return to form.

I enjoyed Horizon when I was young, but I had noticed a change in them lately. They'd started doing those sorts of documentaries about a celebrity's journey of discovery about a subject, and what it means personally to them. Philomena Cunk is funny coz it's true.

I've enjoyed watching this Horizons season so far, though it is dumbed down a bit compared to what it used to be like - I guess they feel the need to cater to a wider audience otherwise science and astronomy programs will go the way of BBC Three.

Glad you said that, I thought to myself "I'd love to see some old Tomorrow's World" and found 3 on iPlayer including this one which looks like it will satisfy my nerd-needs http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p031t265/tomorrows-world-tomorrows-world-computers-in-the-60s

Agreed the old stuff is the best, they are (perhaps inevitably) catering to a relatively new mainstream science audience, and at least the series hasn't been entirely discarded in favour of reality TV. I am only a layman myself, so I don't have a problem with that, as long as it is not too shallow. Worse still is when presenters interact with computer graphics in documentaries, horrible. There's much worse than Horizons for that...

And thankfully Brian Cox isn't involved, can't stand him. Please drop D-Ream in a supermassive black hole and ensure all information is lost :D

Heh heh heh. Don't mind Brian Cox actually.

He's catering for a mass audience with his programs and it does show.

Horizons never has though and as such can cater for a smaller audience.

For UK viewers this is the program I watched on teh space race.

The Race to ruin

And there is a collection of programs on the space race.

Being a total Moon landings nut (I've even got an Omega Speedmaster) it's my personal Nirvana.

Personally I have never liked Horizon. I find it trite, sensationalist and dis-satisfying.

I recall a psychology class I was taking in 1984 where someone wanted to show an episode. They asked if anyone particularly disliked Horizon and no-one said they did, (including me), because no-one wanted to be seen to be jumping on a bandwagon.

Still, it was a good chance to catch up on some rather more important work.

.

Really like the guy he's likeable and clear in his presentation. For me he's the David Attenborough of the hard sciences.

What I like him best for though is how he was and what he said around the time of the higgs boson discovery. He was a guest on "Sunday politics" of all things right at the end of the programme. I felt for him he clearly was uncomfortable with the utterly base stupidity and condescending questions from the presenter about the commercial significance of the discovery. He answered politely but let them all with their smug smiles with the following parting shot:

It went something like this...

I know one thing...we as a population have spent more bailing out banks in one year than ALL the money spent on science and industry since the birth of Christ.

I thought it was a great thing to say and it needs saying to every politician, bureaucrat, and business leader over and over and over and over again until they realise that the best way to make this world better is by putting money in research and innovation. Not swinge-ing looking for margins on the same old money ad nauseum.

Sorry thought I'd put that out there.

I remember watching Horizon back when I was knee-high and they did show some interesting stuff, but now whats the saying "fings ain't what they used to be", there again "Nostalgia Isn’t What It Used To Be".
