I got the stock sidewinder and decide to buy and equip a new shield generator, successfully. I got the C2 variant now. Ok, installed it, took sidewinder for a spin, went to engage some NPCs, and each shot I took hit my hull directly, shields didn't do anything. I did see the shield around my holo-display, but every shot fired at me, was a direct hit. Worse even, I upgraded the sidewinder with new thrusers, better hull alloys, FSD, etc, and they all got damaged and at 65% hull I went back for repairs, 4000 credits !!!!!! Anyone know what I might be doing wrong here? I thought my shields supposed to last longer, instead they do not work at all.

I can't think of any reason for this to happen. Looks like a bug. I know there were issues with new items not working properly (e.g. when switching FSD, you were mass-locked forever, until you restart the game).
So... try restarting the game, and ticket it?
Power could be an issue, but you say you are seeing the shield HUD, so this really looks like a bug

yes, during super cruise etc I see no shield around my ship in the holo-display but as soon as I land or interdict someone, shields reappear... but then, each shot taken is a direct hit into the hull. Or does interdicting get rid of shields ?
Shouldn't affect shields (doesn't affect my own).
Have you checked your power usage? If you are using more power than you have available, some systems will shut down.
about that, what would standard protocol be on the right hand UI ? How should it be done correctly?
Best to go to dock, equipment menu, then check power usage on right side. If deployed energy req. bigger than generated popwer, u need to lower priority on some stuff u deem unnecessary in combat - until u hit appropriate section in power management bar on right side screen - as such there is no optimal setup except for having more power generated than used to avoid this situation in first place.
U can of course see graphical representation of power usage/generation in above mentioned bar in right-side panel.

If it's still not working then raise a ticket. Get some vid of it or screenies if you can, to add to the ticket.
Then see if replacing it does the trick.
Just one thing, you have bought the correct shield for the ship?
I mean that it's not horribly underpowered for the hull mass.
