Hi,
I am sorry if someone made that suggestion already, but my skills with the search function seem to be somewhat limited, and I couldn't find it, so here:
Playable towing and repair ship, something like AA in space.
Prerequisites:
This would have some prerequisites, namely the reintroduction of the distress beacon and the ability to transfer credits and/or make a contract before providing aid.
Description:
A small to medium class ship with the ability to repair other ships in deep space. Maybe using up some resource, like scrap?
Also give it the ability to collect destroyed ship parts to collect scrap (similar to mining, or a "recycling beam" that , targetted at ship wrecks, collects scrap).
Can also refuel other ships.
Should have the ability to bill other ships for his service, e.g. on contact a dialog between the 2 ships is available, the broken down ship may ask (by contacts submenu, like a docking request) for X fuel or repair of system X to operational status for a fixed fee. The "tow" then either refuels the other ship or readies his repair beam and targets the damaged subsystem agreed upon before. Said repair beam is like a negative beam laser, instead of subtracting hit points, it adds hit points. Credits are only transferred upon completion of the contract.
In solo and normal play, the player's usual mission would be to monitor for distress beacons, fly there and aid the NPC, earning some bucks.
In MMO play (if you want to call it that) the "tow" would stay in the background and provide healing. Well, like the healer in any MMO, really.
Problems:
- The distress beacon is a problem in open play, since E: D is so heavily instanced. Since a ship is usually broken in normal cruise, can the distress beacon of a CMDR be broadcast to other players who are not in his instance?
- FD seems to dislike inflight maintenance, otherwise the maintenance system would repair the thrusters. My hopes are, they are already planning on making the "tow" happen in the future.
