My ship idea... I call it "The Imperial Default Cube". Needs a little work, but this should give you a general idea of where I am going...

Oh, nice. I was afraid of hand waving lore setting precedence. The ship I use the most doesn't see me using the kit for it.They do have... seen that on asteroids while mining in the ring.
And on my flipper python docked at a surface port.
But indeed they don't seem to be present while docked in the stations - maybe because in the station the shadow is not rendered but "pictured" maybe?

slapped together another model for fun. Alliance Settler.
Bulked up the body a bit as I intended to make a combat hauler variant of the alliance ship.
Looks more like a Core Dynamics design. My ship idea... I call it "The Imperial Default Cube". Needs a little work, but this should give you a general idea of where I am going...

If their engine is a bit like Ogre3D you can set the hitbox to conform instead of box or sphere. It takes up more memory and processing power, though.Read in Q&A that shipkits should provide cover when on foot (hitbox or so...). would think this is much work, as they have no shadows at the moment.
also, ship kits bought with arx are then not purely cosmetical, pay-to-win rants incoming.
iEagle to Eagle Mk.IIMaybe OP could address the blind spot Elite's designers have been working round for six years or more now and finally give us a medium sized Imperial ship. You know, to go along with the several that both the Feds and Alliance have?
I've often wondered that myself...But adding a ship kit would increase the size of the ship as a target making it easier to hit, pay-to-lose?
