New Ship - Missed Opportunity

With the amount of freight work going on for Trailblazers, I can't help but feel that a massive opportunity has been missed by releasing the Medium multi-role Corsair, instead of a Large class new freighter (a cut down Panther Clipper, anyone?)

People would be throwing money at FDEV right now for access to a new Large freighter with say 1000t cargo capacity. Instead, at earliest we're going to get one in the summer, 3-4 months from now when most of the initial colonisation hype has died down.

The Cobra Mk V barely fits a small landing pad widthwise. I would imagine such a huge freighter ship barely fitting a large landing pad in both directions. That would be cool.

I'm sure they designed model years ago there are pics I'm sure, it fills a large pad and just fits in slot

We need this something which can carry 1200 to 1400 to and from station or carrier
Using t9 at 780ish per run is really tedious building a station, we do need to work and cannot play 24hrs a day. Make it heavy slow but ok in supercruise

Can't wait for all the reports whining they got their behemoth of a freighter stuck in the toast rack and got destroyed by the station...

If Frontier wanted you to be able to build stations twice as fast (twice as fast as "8000 systems a week"?), they could just halve the commodity requirements and make the existing T8/T9/Cutter options therefore twice as quick.

Conversely if they bring out a 1200t superfreighter, the next hauling thing is going to be balanced against everyone using a 1200t superfreighter and the T9 and Cutter will be permanently junk (and the T-8's medium pad advantage barely significant), and you'll need a 2000t super-super-freighter to make that feel personally comfortable.

Power creep on maximum cargo capacity doesn't actually get you anywhere in the long run.

Or even worse since the new ship is too big to dock the new unloading ships would have to move cargo to and from the stations , but there is only 5 per station and takes 24 hrs to load or unload. so when they are busy you have to wait days to get it filled up.

Carrier loading/unloading and auto docking computers make how 'ass' a ship flies largely irrelevent, frankly. Picking a good port and getting a good orbital slot mean your flight is about 10Mm in each direction, usually in a straight line at full throttle. A few seconds under full thrust, throttle back and let the docking computer do the rest. Much lower blood pressure.

That aside - yeah, I do agree that cargo capacity creep isn't a net benefit in the long run, although this thread isn't purely about "oh it's so grindy". I'll reserve comment on that, but absolutely FDEV could have made a fiscal killing with this update by releasing a cargo freighter at the same time.

I agree totally, a matter a fact I played around with a type 9 fitting, you can add an extra 300 tons to the mass through engineering which you take away from core internals, Make it a Fleet Carrier ship, I don't need it to fly to a different systems, just load and unload from the FC. when you chop away at the tonnage in outfitting you can squeeze in 300 more tonnes. SO you can add 2 Lvl 8 cargo racks. Just make a type9 mk2. 1000 tonnes cargo. And that could be done now. WIthout having to change how it looks or anything else. This is needed ASAP! The grind of colonization is tremendous, it would be ashamed for it to die before it even takes off the ground.

That's a very well thought out, rational argument for why we can't have the Panther Clipper. Stop that.

We can still have the Panther Clipper - it's just got to be something other than a 1200t superfreighter.

e.g. carries 600t large pad but has native SCO support and excellent supercruise turning rates would certainly get me to switch from a T-9, without making the T-9 obsolete for all use cases.

That doesn't make sense. The Panther Clipper is a superfreighter.
It should be able to carry more then the T9 or Cutter, that's the whole point.
Buff T9, give Panther Clipper T9 handling stats.
Problem solved.

In FFE, the Panther Clipper carried only slightly more than the Imp Explorer, and less than the Griffin (it was heavier than the Griffin overall because it had a lot more hull mass, but the Griffin had more payload space)

So I wouldn't expect it to carry more than 800t either in that respect, given that so much is already designed on that being the "one trip" cap on cargo.

In FE2, yes, its closest competitor was the Boa which was about 2/3 of the capacity. But on release day for ED, the T-9 (even without its extra class 8 slot back then) out-did the next biggest (Anaconda) by a similar margin. The T-9 is and always has been the superfreighter of this era, I wouldn't expect another ship to be even bigger than that.

That might be true, but surely many will appreciate a 1000T (and not more then that) hauler. And won't go for anything less then somewhere close to 1000.
This is a new era so in that regard and the colonisation feature, introducing the last and final big ship can only be a good thing imo.
It's been a while since we've gotten a new big ship.

Keeping to lore is fine, but it's been broken allready several times. As I remember the Courier in FE2 wasn't a small ship, as one example.
And to throw in the: "we want to support FDev by throwing ARX at them by buying ships" argument, for sure it will be a banger.
