New Ship Suggestion, Zorgon Peterson Explorer Class

THIS I would dearly love to see, an all new Zorgon Peterson Explorer class ship.

I've been a big fan of the ZP ships, especially the Adder, because its just soo full of character that you instantly warm to it and develop a connection. It also has the best sounding engine of any ship I've flown so far.

Just recently after completing a trip out into the galaxy in my Adder and taking part in the exploration community goal I was finally able to afford the Asp.

...and you know what...it made me apreciate the Adder even more as an exploration ship.

Hear me out. Yes, the Asp has great selection of internal, utility and of course that mighty jump range. Plus the exterior view is far superior, no doubt about that not gonna argue.

BUT, here's my problem. The life of explorer is a lonely one, you're far far away from home, so imho creature comforts are VERY important. The ship really does become the home away from home, so it had better be luxurious and comfortable.

Whilst the external view from the Asp is great, the cockpit itself is awful. Sorry but I can't stand it. You can tell its built by Lakon, the business trade ship builders. It's all just purely functional sharp metal block, rudimentary at best, the canopy structure itself is this harsh thin strips that reflect light all too easily off it becoming distracting, then you have those stupid overly bright blue side lights which keep popping into view when you turn left or right (or if you're on Oculus hard to miss!)

Do I really want to be 10,000LY away from home stuck in such a basic tin can metal box of a cockpit with no doubt the most basic tiny bed stuff in the back?!? HELL NO. Not to mention the sound of the Asp engine is 'ok' but nothing special.

So yes, I am missing that immersive feeling I get with the Adder, the warm upholstery that keeps me feeling less alone in space.

So please, if you're listening Zorgon Peterson (*cough* Frontier *cough*) , hear my call. A new explorer class ship with all the character of the Adder but bit more exterior view and a jump range to rival or maybe even slightly beat the Asp please!

*EDIT* After having spent more time with the Asp, believe me I do appreciate not only the range and visibility, but especially being able to load in such a massive fuel scoop making the process way faster. In practical terms its a beautiful exploration craft, but still, those silly overly bright blue side lights and the harsh squared off metal cockpit design is its weak point, so I'd still like to see some new comfier alternative.

I tend to agree.

I have a plan, as soon as passenger cabins come in, to head to Imperial space, buy the largest, most luxurious state-cabin available (because the Imperials are bound to do it better than anyone else - politics aside), and then use it for myself!!

Although I'm sure there will be a willing market to buy upgraded interiors for ships, much like paint jobs, once walking around spaceships comes in later this year (?).

I concur, however, I didn't go exploring in Adder..... I went to imperial space and got Baron, so I could buy the Clipper.... I'm out exploring in my Clipper now, I'm 6 days into my trip and I love this bird even more....

I imagine some of those Imperial class ships must be fairly plush inside, haven't flown one myself, but yeah, please Frontier consider this!!

There really should be another explorer class ship. Some say the Courier will be that but the name doesn't fit with the role. The Imp Explorer from the original Elite would be ideal and I loved the 3 nacelles design anyway. Having the 3 nacelles give the impression of having a stonking great engine for long distance jumps.
Something the size of a Python but the range of an Asp on steroids. Not so well armed since it's not needed so much out on the fringe but plenty of extra power and utility slots for those addons like repair mods etc. A decent shield to allow for accidents while exploring, a huge engine and huge fuel tank (or plenty of space for aux tanks) just like it had in the original Elite.
With the Imperials liking for comfort, it would be a very plush and comfortable ship for those long journeys. It might cost as much as an Anaconda but it would be worth the cost.

To expand upon my previous post. I would like to see a Gutamaya built explorer that is similar to my clipper in ability to load all weapons and explore, but have a 40LY jump range.

IIRC, The Imperial Trader was the ship with 3 nacelles. The Imp Explorer had a low and wide saucer nose, and 2 nacelles upswept from center. Reimagined in E: D, it could look almost star-trek like, but with Gutamaya flair. Would also probably be on par with a Type 9 or Anaconda. Big, end game explorer with class.

Yes, I stand corrected. However, the Courier and Clipper both have two nacelles, the Explorer should have 3 to give it that big engine look it needs to say, 'I can jump a long, long way in one go.'

Thats what Anaconda is made for...!!!! To jump 34ly and still be able to stretch your legs in an ample bridge. And has a nice observation room in the front...

I love the adder, I still have mine, it was my first ship purchase. I didn't explore with it, I went bounty hunting, it was awesome. 2 fixed pulse lasers and 1 fixed multicannon, it was badass.

I wonder if Saud Kruger would be the company to look at for a Deep space Exploration Liner
They produce the Luxury Liners, and upgraded the Fer De Lance for opulence

Now that I've spent a bit more time with the Asp I really do apreciate how good a multi-role ship it is, but in particular it's ability as an explorer, with its relatively large fuel tank, good jump range and ability to load huge fuel scoop with space for auto field repair units.

But still... that Lakon harsh metal cockpit... I miss my creature comforts, and a decent cup holder!

I think the Asp is the perfect idea for an exploration ship, she is fairly basic in many ways because any extras just mean more weight and that means less range so for me she is just as a deep space exploration ship should be. The whole idea of a Luxury long range exploration ship to me just sounds so Victorian, where a young gentleman would head off to explore the wilds accompanied by just his trusty guide....and fifty porters to carry "just the bare essentials for survival. Yes I think we will get some big long range ships but I also think that they should be so expensive that they will be uneconomical to use for exploration.

Have you met our lot down near Achenar?

I would like to have an good-lookin' exploration vessel, similar to FDL (visuality).
A very long range - about 40-45ly, and fast in sublight, beautiful luxury yacht, in mid-range ~50-70 mln price. This can be made from a paper and have poor weaponry and poor cargo (so thats wy it need to be fast).

And i am out for a months. :)

I agree. I just went from a Hauler to a type 6. Its like stepping out of a luxury Winnebago and into a sea container with a joystick and window. The door on my Hauler went "whump" when you closed them and "clang, rattle, bang" on my type 6 )

Though I can't help but wonder if it was real and you'd spent two months out in deep space, covered in plasters from cutting yourself on all the nasty sharp metal edges of the Lakon interior, just how home sick you'd get ;)

Besides, a little bit of upholstery and a decent bed in terms of weight is just a mere drop in the ocean towards the ships overall weight and thus jump distance. What's a 0.0001LY reduction between friends...

I like the idea of a dedicated Zorgon Peterson exploration ship. When I first sat in a Hauler I quickly fell in love with it. It's a very decent ship and feels very homey. I liked it so much that I still have it and use it very regularly. Sadly the Asp is objectively the slightly better exploration vessel but as the OP said it just doesn't feel as nice. (Though I have to disagree about the engine noise. It's different but to me it's as full of character as the Hauler's.)

So having basically a Hauler but with a few more internal slots and a very slightly increased jump range (let's say just above 30 ly with basic shields and all D modules) would be a dream come true. The ship doesn't even need to be as good as the Asp, just close to it and with Zorgon Peterson's interior style to really make it feel like home away from home.
