NEW SHIPS WANTED

SHIP Carriers (similar to Aircraft Carriers, but in space).
I would love to see a ship in space that you can store multiple fighter ships into. This way, you can create a Wing, have your wingmen dock their fighter ships into your Ship Carrier, and you can fly around the galaxy with your entire team ready to go.
It would also be really cool if you could own multiple ships and have them all docked in your own Ship Carrier so you can roam the galaxy with all your assets in 1 place and ready accessible wherever you go.

Fighter Craft
We need some classical fighter craft in this game. Something small and highly maneuverable/agile. Perhaps something similar to the Starfury in Babylon 5. It only needs 2-4 small hardpoints (for beam and pulse lasers), Bulkheads, Reactor Bay, Thrusters, Frame Shift Drive, Life Support, Power Coupling, sensors, fuel tank, 2x internal components (for shield generator and maybe a docking computer).
For balancing purposes, the new fighter ships should be extremely fast and agile (be able to do a 180 flip in 1-2 seconds), but have limited size hardpoints (4x small), power bays (so you have to be cautious about maintaining constant firing) and smaller shield generators. They should however have increased thrusters.
In other words, you are compromising firepower for agility and speed.

If we can't have a ship carrier to carry a few of these bad boys around and fly in a wing with friends, then make these ships available at all Conflict Zones so players can purchase them as a new ship, fly into battles, get a few kills, and then sell them off and get back into their regular ships.

Having dedicated fighter ships fighting in a wing along side, say a Python or Anaconda, should make for some interesting and kick-ass battles.

The Anaconda will supposedly be able to carry small ships such as sidewinders in it.
Hoping for all small ships to be able to land in it though, because carrying a few Vultures with you would be awesome.

Nah, the Vulture is 3x the size of the Sidewinder at the very least, it's pretty huge, and the Cobra's too wide. However, the fighter you're looking for is the F63 Condor :)

I think the question is, how would this ever be superior to everyone just taking their own ship?
I mean, agility is nice, but we already have agile ships, that also are capable of independent operation. What's in it for the fighter pilots?

Still both ships are classified as "small", so having a small landing pad inside the Anaconda should allow both to land in it if it is implemented.

you, sir, YOU! :D

when i was at work some hours ago, i thought "how frickin awesome would it be to have a "small" carrier where i could put some ships into and then just switch to one of my docked ships and start flying around with it while there's a small "mobile base" with some weapons above me"
i thought that it could/should have:
2 large landing bays (for anaconda/t9 etc)
2 medium landing bays (Asp etc)
~5 small landing bays (Cobra etc)
1 "escape pod" which is located on top of the carrier and not inside the hangar, with a door similar to the one the Eagle has to shield its top heat sinks. and in this special escape pod bay sits a sidewinder (no other ship should be able to park there)
it only has one internal compartment for a shield generator. scanners, fuel scoops etc shouldn't work in there but fueling could be done through a docked ship, so one just refuels on a star with a ship (for example with an Asp explorer, which also scans everything in the system), flies back to the carrier, transfers the fuel and flies out to refuel again until the carrier and the fuel-ship are full.
weapon-wise i thought about large turrets, 2 on top, 2 on bottom 2-3 on left and right and a single one to the back and then maybe 3 huge weapon slots for fights against other carriers

this ship would be interesting for many people i guess. it makes relocating to another star system/constellation easier, traders could fill it up with T9s, T7s etc and could max their cargo because the docked ships wouldn't need shield generators and for doing missions/bounty hunting it'd be cool too because it doesn't matter where you have to go or how far you fly, you always have the stuff you need with you, especially if you leave colonised space.

such a carrier would be a real goal to reach for me :D

the only problem would be: if you die with the carrier, everything that's docked is gone. and if you die while outside of the carrier: you respawn at the last visited base while your carrier still waits in space. you can see in which system but if you've been flying to USSs, you're probably in for the search for a needle in a haystack :D

I'd also love to pilot a Carrier-type ship, because it adds lots of new gameplay possibilities. Like players and Wing members can dock there, repair, resupply etc. We need a separate thread for this.

To repair/refuel etc you would need resources, so local trade could boom with player traders/miners selling to you until you meet your quota, etc.

Maybe pirate attacks? :p

All great idea.
As a starting point though (just to get this kicked off in the game), lets try to simplify it a bit.
Just to have a carrier ship with 4 docking bays that you can fly from star system to star system, park it outside a Space Station, and switch out to your normal ship for you to be able to dock at that Station.
It should have a Fuel Scoop and make it that the carrier ship can only refuel at Suns (unable to refuel at Space Stations)

The 4 docking bays on the carrier should have the ability to turn them into massive Cargo Holds when a ship isn't docked there. When you pull up to a Space Station, you have to use a smaller ship to transport the goods from your Carrier to the Space Station. For players who play the game alone, it means having a small fighter craft with shield generators and all the trimmings docked, and another with no shield generators but cargo bays so they can transfer goods back and forth.
It also acts as a balancing thing because it would take time and multiple trips flying between the Space Station and the Carrier until the carrier's cargo bays are full.

Eg, Make the Carrier cargo bays a 64t bay each, but the sidewinder only has a 4t cargo bay (6 if you take out the shield generator). That means making 11 trips between the carrier and the space station until that 1 bay is full.
This turns the Carrier from a weapons platform to a trading platform. When the cargo bay is empty, it turns back into a ship dock. If you have friends with ships docked in your carrier and they are offline, then too bad, that docking platform is taken until they log in again and fly out (so be careful of who you allow to dock in your carrier).

As for the Fighter craft, they need to be cheap and disposable (from the users point of view). Make them super fast and super agile. With 4 pulse cannons, they can still pack a punch. Give them the shield strength of a sidewinder but give them a weaker hull.

I'd love to see a carrier ship in the game, and I am not thinking about an Anaconda with a usless ability to carry a sidewinder... ridiculous:) A Carrier atleast should be able to carry 1 medium and 3 small ships inside it.

However imagine how extremely large prictag follow that kind of ship? And what do you do when it is loaded and a well equiped wing destroy you:)

I think it's hard to implement a ship like this into the current E: D Universe. If u see 4-5 carrier ship loaded with an army, dont you think it's kinda too much power in a few civils hand? If we got carriers, we should get some option to expand the civilization by our own, and this is the old "just not gonna happen" story.

So yes the idea is good, and a lot of people from the community want simmilar things like this, however it is against the Dev's vision... unfortunately.

Obviously it will be an expensive ship, but enough player would get it, because it offers new gameplay possibilities. That drives players to grind for it.

It's not against the devs vision and has not been ruled out. E.g. the devs said "Executive" features could be added in the future as well. If enough people want different kind of ships like carriers they could be added.

Elite Dangerous will evolve beyond the original classic game over the coming years. Elite should reach its full potential.

Hahahaha. If they do end up implementing this and bring out a carrier ship, I better get a free one just for starting the conversation and kicking it all off....... thats all I'm saying. lmao

i wouldn't even mind :p i'm only playing solo/private group so i'd never come across your carrier :D

Well they do have a serise of capital ships for each class. Soo hipefully when they allow players to fly capital ships ..

Exactly... Have any of you actually been in a combat zone against F63's, whilst flying a GOOD ship? A grade shielded Python, FdL, or Vulture, for example?

F63's are like freaking misquitos. They just don't do any damage. I was swarmed by 6 or 7 of them whilst scooping cargo for one of the Lugh community goals, and the most annoying things was just the noise of a million small lasers tapping my shields. I never lost a ring. Int he end, I'd turn and shoot them just to stop the noise...

The only way that ship would be worth flying, is if EVERYONE in a combat zone was in the same ship - or the imperial fighter version...

Z...

Obviously, the new fighter ships would need some decent firepower in order to be effective.
Not to bring this back to Star Wars, but even though the x-wings were useless against the Death Stars, they were able to do some serious damage to its weaponry and its systems. Perhaps that might be their forte. Equal against sidewinders, eagles and vipers. Useless against any other ships hull, but able to take down shields, weapons and subsystems rather quickly.

This way, alone they would be useless against other larger ships. In a swarm though, (along with say a Cobra for example), they are a force to be reckoned with.

I would like a fast, agile small ship that can fit a huge weapon on it. Maybe Alliance themed - they would probably rely on guerrilla-warfare since they would have a smaller military than the Empire or Federation. A little ship that could hit hard and then run away would fit the bill.

Something like this maybe:

These are guesstimates.
Mass: 190
Spd: 220; Bst: 350; Agi: 9
Shd: 230; Arm: 130; Pad: S
Cost: ~15,000,000 to 20,000,000 (maybe)
1 Huge hardpoint
3 Small hardpoints
5 Utility hardpoints
Class 5 Reactor
Class 4 Thruster
Class 4 FSD
Class 3 Environment Control
Class 5 Power Coupling
Class 4 Sensor Suite
Class 3 Fuel Store
Class 5 Internal Compartment
Class 4 Internal Compartment
Class 3 Internal Compartment
Class 1 Internal Compartment

It's sort of like a mini version of a Fer-de-lance, or maybe a buffed up Eagle with a huge gun stuck to it.

Just wanted to post that I still think a glass cannon would be nice. I would like to see a small ship with a huge gun mount and two or three small mounts, a big reactor and power distributor for it's size, is fast and agile, but weak in the armor and shield department and doesn't have many internal compartments.
