New smuggling alternative idea

You should actually lose the cargo if you get caught. As it is now you just sell it on the black market. You still come out ahead just not in the millions. That would tick off a lot of people.
Smugglers don't keep the goods when they get caught. Imagine IRL, well sir we caught you with 5 pounds of meth, Here's a 20,000 dollar fine. Now be on your way.
The biggest losers would be loggers. That's a lot of cargo to loose.

You get caught, a hatch limpet attaches, and boom, there goes the cargo to be destroyed by security services.
Make learning avoidance a priority.
I can see the logic here; but I see this all as: The process of getting caught. By this I mean, the best method not to get caught, is the use of speed. If i see a ships scan starting, I will move away from the scanner, as fast as possible. So if I am successful, I don't get completely scanned. At the same time, if the scan was a success, how long do I have before the limpets attach and I start to lose cargo? The same mechanic applies to pirates, trying to remove my cargo and at present, I stand a chance to get away, so why not with the law?

I think you should be fined, and lose all your cargo... ie, have to eject it all under penalty of death.

Indeed. Big rewards - big risk. Conversely there should be additional mechanics to throw off scans (e.g. shielded smuggling compartments that offer less slots than normal cargo racks, but take a lot longer to scan, or adding hull armour means that internals take longer to scan). So much Frontier could do...

Let's be honest. SD missions are not difficult and are not a problem.

I would say that the main issue in FD smuggling is how the black market is working/handle.

I do believe that some overhaul may come in the future, with scanned-but-smuggled goods being 'marked' as unsellable, unless you use a black market 'fence'. The mechanic for tagging goods was added in a previous patch, but was removed after complaints during beta that there was no way of removing the tag.
.
It is still terminally silly to have 'BLACK MARKET' -> 'I WANT TO SELL ILLEGAL GOODS' as menu options though. Frontier First Encounter's bulletin board handled this much better (could be a fence or could be a cop sting operation), but would require NPC interactions that aren't in the game yet. :(

A new smuggling idea:

Some stations could have lasers which detect ships passing the door while being in silent runing and or very cold. A new equipment could be used to disable those lasers.

An equipment can be used to conceal the cargo while you are being scanned, this device could generate a lot of heat on the ship, this will allow to use big ships for this task.

If a police scans you, you could try to bribe him so he leaves you alone, this could fail.

Black Markets should work depending your "smuggling rank", the more you have the more BM you could know and receive better prices.

Your ship has an ID, if you have been cought with illegal goods several times, your ship ID is listed in a global "police list" and you could be chased through the galaxy until you change the ID or ship.

This will never happend: Cloack device, yeah that cool device which makes you invisible, it uses so much energy that all your non essential systems malfunction and shut down.

The simplicity of this game reaches unimaginable dimanssions.
