New space scenery pretty please?

So, I've been wandering. I've seen some pretty cool things. Saw a five-star system, with three brown dwarfs in tight orbit. Saw a gas giant with twin moons orbiting so close I almost crashed flying between them. I've flown so far below the galactic plane now, the entire sky is divided neatly into blue and gold halves.

And I've seen a whole truckload of generic icy planets, rocky planets, rocks, more rocks, way more rocks, chunks of ice, and some rocks with some chunks of ice.

At this point, I'm thinking back to Freelancer's (admittedly heavily-stylised) space scenery and rather wishing Elite could pull off a bit more variety.

As such, here's my personal wish list (feel free to add your own):

* Massive, solitary asteroids. The kind you could land on (when that's eventually implemented) and start listening to Aerosmith. Maybe with cavernous holes in them, perfect for secret smuggler bases and death-defying chases.

* Massive space-icebergs for much the same reason.

* Asteroid bases in general, and large-scale mining operations - maybe with some mega-sized NPC mining ships with big chompy rock-crushing mouth bits you could accidentally fly into.

* Comets. You already have the particle effects in place, used by ships in supercruise.

* Greater asteroid/iceteroid diversity in rings (big ones, small ones), with maybe some little teeny chunks that would hit your shields and bounce off in a satisfying way.

* Major, devastating celestial events in progress. Half-destroyed planets that have collided with things, or been hit by massive asteroids. Planets passing through debris belts, whose skies are alight with meteorite showers.

* Junkyards and *artificial* debris fields. Mankind has spread across thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of systems. The implied population growth is staggering - the inevitable result would be a whole lot of wars, and a whole lot of ships lost at "sea". Some *old* shipwrecks would be nice.

* Minefields left in the wake of prior conflicts. Abandoned, derelict stations whose automated defences have gone a little crazy.

* Environmental effects beyond simple star proximity - maybe anomalous fields of radiation that would cause all ships to lose shield power, or mess with sensors, or reduce thruster power, or cause FSD interruptions.

* Full-scale accretion discs - dangerous, but full of resources.

Oh, I know. It would be a while before any of this stuff was implemented even if they were planning on it. But I can dream.

Awesome ideas, would add a lot more to the galaxy. I wish they would also add night lights to all these earth like worlds and colonies.

Oh, as an addendum (this isn't strictly speaking "scenery"):

Maybe add major pirate-infested systems. Places where the stations are hostile, and you get a very clear sense that you're in dangerous territory, regardless of your reputation with the major governments. It should feel like you're playing Serenity, and about to fly into Reaver territory.

A lot of that is coming according to the DDF archives...

Here's a bit of concept art for asteroid bases for example

But nebulae are rare in the game and to get there, one needs many hours in the game, (including power drive something that is not destroyed by the way that ships with interdiction).

I headed out to the Pleadies Nebula with my starter Sidewinder and a single FSD upgrade and a very rubbish fuel scoop. I didn't even have any shields.

They really aren't that hard to get to.

Eventually went to the rest of nearby nebula with a Cobra...but you can do it with much less.

Yeah I'm on my way to that nebula actually! (Orion/Loop etc) It's just taking a while, because I'm obsessively scanning every system (gotta make money somehow - still flying my freagle)

Though I stumbled upon (while gliding through the galaxy map) the "spirograph nebula" which seems to be a single system with a big supernova. Or maybe a black hole. Thought I'd check that out on the way.

Also, that concept shot looks awesome. Can't wait for that! That's exactly what I'm talking about.

Np, after 3 or 4 mont's in travel :D

Really, my position in game is far, far way from nebulas and i try. :S

Kit out your Eagle for mining and get digging.

Sounds crazy but it worked for me.

I've actually managed to bump my freagle's jump range to about 15lys now - all upgrades paid for by scanning.

The problem with mining is slots. I'd need to lose something to get space for the refinery... and I'd rather not dump my shields. Already dumped my guns. That being said, I have enough money now for an adder or something, and could do exploring and mining at the same time that way.
