New Steam Update broken if you don't own the Odyssey DLC?

TLDR: Anyone playing the 'Live Horizons' version but who doesn't own the Odyssey DLC needs to download a 50gb~ update patch.

Quick background: I've only been playing for a week or so now, but I've definitely been playing on Live Horizons. I've communicated in-game with my new Squadron teammates, and I'm getting all the 'live' content and in-game news, community goals, etc. It's 100% Live Horizons. However, I don't own the Odyssey DLC (yet).

With today's new update on Steam, the game wants me to redownload the entire 47gb game:

Except to do that, it's not deleting the old version. It's downloading that entire 47gb ON TOP OF THE EXISTING installed game files.

This is a problem because I was running ED on a 128gb SSD drive, which should have been ample space, but now all of a sudden my download failed because I ran out of disk space:

Okay, 'that's annoying', I thought to myself. But I figured I'll just move the game files while this download happens.

BUT NO. I'm not allowed to do that because there's a pending update!

In talking to my Squadron teammates who own the Odyssey DLC, none of them have had this issue. However, others who don't own the Odyssey DLC are experiencing the same issue as me in having to download the 50gb update on-top of their existing content.

Frontier devs... cmon. What the hell?

Same here. I ended up deleting my Live installation (by deleting its folder, since Steam wouldn't let me start the launcher due to the required update), just to now redownload it via Steam. This works without needing additional space, it just takes time and bandwidth.

I am honestly so peeved at this crap. I updated everything before going offshore as internet is really slow.. Why the hell do I need to download 47gb when I had everything installed.. Really really ridiculous way to roll this out! Really annoyed at this. Devs really thought this one through!!!

I have Odyssey installed and it has deleted half my game folder is 20gb and wants to install 47gb.. I have 300kb/s internet for the next 3 weeks.. Yeh thanks frontier....

A few people from my discord reported the same.
I managed to work around it sort of. Had the original files from a few weeks ago on an external SSD uninstalled copied them over made sure there was at least 50gb free, reinstalled and it verified and didn't download anything! Crisis averted haha

I have Odyssey and it messed me up as well. My Elite installation has grown in size from 71GB to 102GB. Very irritating on a 512GB drive.

Yeah I feel like there's definitely some Legacy files taking up big space, even though the launcher says Legacy isn't installed.

It's weird.

Is this Steam being stupid? Those who don't have Odyssey and have finished the update: What are the directories in your Products folder called before and after the update? I just did my update (I had Odyssey and Legacy installed) and Steam did only a verification pass. I still have the same two directories (elite-dangerous-64 containing my old Legacy install and elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 containing live with Odyssey) with the same content in my Products folder; did by any chance the folder name of live without Odyssey change? In that case, Steam would see the base game (live) as missing and re-download it.

I fixed this by reinstalling the game. Now it's just 52 GB instead of 102. Not sure what the problem was; maybe I had some left over junk from the Odyssey alpha.

I opened the install directory of Elite: Dangerous -> Products, saw that there were other directories than elite-dangerous-64 and elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 which had about 50 GB each of data in them. I renamed them first, to see if they were important for running Odyssey. No error message appeared and Odyssey ran without a hitch, so I deleted the directories and slimmed my Elite installation directory down by 100 GB.

Yes, that is exactly what happened - before it had its own name, now it seems to be the standard Odyssey directory. I don't remember what the folder was called before though (wasn't it something like "FDEV-38-in-40"?). Manually deleting that folder and letting Steam reinstall Elite fixed everything without needing extra hard drive space, now in the "elite-dangerous-odyssey-64" folder.

Maybe simply renaming the folder would have fixed it too, I did not try that though.
