Newcomer / Intro New system discovery

So I found a system that none of the planets has anyones name on them as discoverers. Now what? Do I have to map them, land on them, rub a genie in a lamp? I have mapped one world, and am currently sitting on it, so yeah... now I just need to know what to DO with them.

CRAP. I don't have a FSS, just a DSS. I couldn't find an FSS before I left as none of the starbases I visited sold them.

Standard on all ships as far as I am aware, so you should have it, check your bindings in the controls section to set it up. It doesn't appear in firegroups like the DSS.

Just as a matter of interest, where is it? Just asking for a friend you know......lol no keep it to yourself until you have sold the data!
It's a LONGGGGGGGGG way off the beaten path. If I wasn't dead broke I'd bookmark, self destruct, and find an FSS somewhere and come back just to be final. But I AM dead broke (I have under 300k and my Dolphin is stripped down and managed till it gives me a 26.27ly fsd range. But then again, it really would be a pita to fly all the way back here as well.

Isn't it just called Discovery Scanner? Built in, as said. Seems strange the OP managed to find all the planets without knowing what the FSS is - maybe they're still in the bubble? I think there are some systems that are pre-discovered.

Ok, the "controls" make ZERO sense what so ever. It's just mouse controls up and down arrows etc, nothing on what turns it on or off. I swear this game doesn't explain things they really should explain.

No. I'm like 4 days into playing this game and the GAME doesn't explain sh.. to you. The controls section for the fss is meaningless w/o a control to toggle it ON. Which isn't there that I can see.

Welcome to Elite where the learning curve is more like a wall that you faceplant into every few seconds. By the time you learn the game your nose is thin as a pancake and twice as wide.

Enter FSS Mode is at the bottom of the Mode Switches section.

Or you can map Discovery Scanner into a Fire Group

Your choice

Good example. The toggle for show help on how to use the fss is the H key, but when I press it, it doesn't do anything. T target current signal. WHAT bloody signal? NONE of the settings make a lick of sense at all. And they don't do anything in game.

I think [HOME] is default for FSS help - T means target what you are zoomed-in on in the FSS screen (planet, signal source, etc)

The FSS is the mini-game where you spot planets by looking around and zooming in/out. It is not a module, it is a function of the Discovery Scanner. The Discovery Scanner used to be a module you could install and remove, but now it is always on every ship. So in short, everyone always has a discovery scanner and FSS.

To map a planet you need the Deep Surface Scanner (DSS) which is the thing you use to launch probes at them. When you get the planet sufficiently covered (90+% or something) you'll get the note and if you were first to hand the data in you get the First Mapped Tag.

When EDO launches you can also be the first to Land on a planet. All you need to do is just walk on it AFAIK, no need to sell any data. You get money for scanning/mapping planets. You get no money for landing on them. When you land on them you might find geo signs, which if scanned are worth a bit of money.

If you're zoomed in fully on a Signal or Body when in FSS Mode, you can Target that right there.
Once you leave FSS Mode, you'll find that Target is still locked for Navigational purposes and you can fly there.
(this is very useful in several cases, i.e. you search for a High Grade Signal Source, find one amongst many and have it conveniently targeted after scanning all Signal Sources in the System and exit FSS Mode - alternatively one of the many Planetary Bodies you scanned in the FSS has Biological Signals you may want to investigate... and voila, you can target it right there in FSS Mode, so you know where to head to after leaving FSS again).

Congratulations! If the Star or Stars also doesn't have a name on it you get 1st Discovered on that too and the entire system is yours forever.

Immediately self-destruct to get back to a station and sell the data before someone else. DONT! Used to be true but not anymore, DO NOT do that, seriously, dont even try it. You must get to a station safely and sell the data to get your name on it. Its the traditional historical RL Explorer thing, the credit goes to the one who gets back first and claims it, not necessarily the first one to find it.

You'll be 99.9% safe to continue on your way finding more undiscovered and then when you do find a station sell the data and its your name on it. First Foot in Odyssey apparently will work as soon as you step out, no need to get back safe.

Wrong way round :) FSS is Full Spectrum Scanner - its the bit on a separate screen where you zoom in to resolve all the bodies in that other screen and get more details or you can just fly close enough to stop the 'scanning' message in the bottom left info panel and resolve what the planet is. Fitted to all ships as standard, may need to assign a button / keybind to it if not already but usually is in one as standard.

DSS - Detailed Surface Scanner (I think) - is the one where you fire probes to map the planet and is an optional purchase. This shows POI on the planet and surround....until Odyssey when I believe its different.

Probably want to land on one and drive the SRV around. You will be the first person ever to land and drive on that planet...and possibly the last. Bookmark the System in GalMap so you can look back when sold data and see your name on everything. Just because its your first and you can show your friends.
