new system map joy :D

I'm finding the galaxy map virtually unusable. Far too many system names displayed and those stupid big blue dots make it hard to see the actual stars. Don't know if it's just me, but the search function is broken too - no issues with real names (Sol, etc) but it won't find procedurally generated systems.

This counts as a bug, surely ... (the community thanks you commander, for any direct report ticket to FD)

I think it's fair to say the PP update is mostly biased towards localised travel!
The big blue dots are something of a shock .. but the orbital lines, planet discovery game is, completely gone ..

On the plus side .. the option to target (your existing target) locks out in the local map ...
so I suggest lock out, of direct targeting UNDISCOVERED objects, looks like a tweak rather than a big design thing.
(Likewise with the big blue dots)

Having had a quick scoot around, exploration inside a discovered system of planets is probably still quicker by following orbital lines, than by target explore target explore. I must still hold to the proviso though, that objects outside of discovery scan range (ie. not yet discovered) would be better locked out of the system map targeting until discovered.

Definitely putting this down to FD concentrating, not unsurprisingly, on powerplay missions, and mechanics directed towards a more localised type of gameplay than we might be used to. For instance, in system map, route planning (button locked out currently) is there, but I suspect that might be either (1) a relic from galaxy map targeting (2) the beginning of in system tour planning, the nucleus of an autopilot system? (+1 if it is)

Please do hold off on targeting those undiscovered bodies :D but ...
having updated (and it took a while) I'm in a better position to express my own ... system map, joy
+1 to the devs

Hmm..well, one of us is outdated...

From the first AMA...Big Kahuna did confirm was still on the list.....

They had it in the design document, then reslised how huge the dev investment was for this, then they put it on the back burner, then said indirectly it won't happen, now DB says it is on the list(yes you are up to date), to quieten down the few who want it (I do) . It won't happen anytime soon (not even next year)as it is just bling and not content :)

Being able to click system map objects in populated / explored / discovered systems, is absolutely fine by me ..
Making total sense, it will help a with navigating CORE systems, trading, mining .. no problem.

My problem is that for unexplored systems, there's now no search in finding that far away dwarf star that, up until now, you knew was there but had to discover from orbit lines and flying up out of the periapsis plane ..

This, exactly this.

Throw in the ADS and there is little effort to exploration now. I thought this was "elite" dangerous, where even trying to land is meant to be potentially deadly (at least for new players).

I'm sorry but it requires an enormous amount of suspension of disbelief that the computer navigation systems can identity all the bodies in a system, their gravity, orbital periods etc. but not be able to assist in navigation to them. We have after all just spent 1.5m CR on a state of the art system scanner. That it doesn't integrate with navigation, in a thousand years time, would be weird.

Has nothing to do with the ADS - I am still using the BDS - and what he described is in fact the case.

TBH that does not feel like its going to be repeatable enjoyment. If you did that in a system it feels like it would take hours for even relatively dull systems. If you want to do that fine, there is nothing that stops you exploring with an intermediate scanner. Just please don't try to impose that on me!

One of the great things about exploration is that there is no right way, and the galaxy is so vast whatever anyone does for exploration is unlikely to impair anyone else's enjoyment. In the 1500 systems I've been through, I've probably had less than 10 with tags on since I got outside the bubble, and one of those was Sag A.

It is fun but it's more like 30 mins per system. It yields a real sense of discovery (which could be made better). Granted, I travel from system to system, not towards any specific destination. If you are the type of explorer who wants to "get somewhere" (e.g., a nebula, Sag A, etc) and wants to therefore make good speed, then the best you should be able to do IMO is a tertiary scan of the system with minimal data returned, at least for the systems you are zipping through on your way to your destination.

Greetings Explorers,

I'd like to say that I think the new system map is very useful. I can point-and-navigate when I'm doing something else than exploring (I appreciate that I can select the space station, too). While exploring, body positions dictate the flying route and I use the navigation panel. With the new map but can now check where the orange triangle pointer is to make sure I didnt miscount the orbit lines. The problem with routes being deleted by setting the trianglein system map does not apply to me, luckily.

Explorer (thoroughly lost)

PS: Hi again, this is my first post so allow me to introduce myself a bit more. I have been reading the forum more in the last few days since my exploring has become a lot more long-ranged. I understnd that some topics are hotly debated, and as I am sending my first post to a thread where tempers are rising, please allow me to get you angry be saying
- I explore for the fun of it, and for the honor. Trading has money, but no honor. Little golden nametags on astro objects give meaning to my life. I feel honor even though I don't do parallaxes. An orrerey view would be nice -- and honourable. (Best would be if I would be sure not to misspell either of the words)
- I am also that horrible kind of person who does not scan ice chunks, but only the interesting bits. Actually, this is not because of the money, I honestly believe outdoor earth likes ARE more interestring.
- Frontier/First Encounters? Loved em, love this game too. The astrophysics part is far from perfect but at least someone even tries to have a credible galaxy.
- I WANT planetary landing so badly it hurts to write about it. Planetary landings have the potential of making exploring so much more varied that I think a lot of discussions on wether skill is needed with the advanced scanner will fade. I hope I can resist getting into these discussions...
- I like this game enough to play it all weekend (1.3 patch server problems or not) even though I habe the Witcher 3 waiting on my harddisk.

Thank you for reading this, or for skipping over it.

I'd also like to thank the forum for many useful/interesing exploring posts, though of course I can't remember each of them to add rep...

Welcome. Thanks for participating. Here is your rep +1.

It can be the problem sometimes that developers produce great code, but the UI is a crock of...... What they think is logical isn't to the every day user.

Guilty as charged - not for Elite, I'm not a developer on that, but the general principle of designing a UI that makes perfect sense when you know how the code behind it works without realising that for a user who's not coming from that direction it doesn't work at all.

New system map is pointless since using it cancels your galaxy map route. So for explorers its completely useless sadly.

Overlay on the planet pop-up window is rubbish. The window is much too large and you cannot select any bodies hidden behind it. I feel as if many of the new implementations are not living up to expectations but this is FD, they seem pretty good at listening to gripes and correcting things...

They seem to have essentially just included system map objects in the same structure as galaxy map so the same route planner works across both levels. This seemed like a really neat and clever solution to a developer - and on some levels it is (if you're at station A in system 1 and want to go to station B in system 2 plotting the full route and having station B automatically targeted when you hit system 2 is probably a nice feature for traders....).

Unfortunately since it is the same route planner that only allows one route, it necessarily cancels the inter-system route that we, as explorers, think of as being a completely different thing.

Maybe. Either way its not a "feature" that is of much use to explorers. Of course why they simply couldn't let you see the rocks in system is completely beyond me. The simplest solution to a system with a rock belt - the bane of explorers everywhere. You would think the guys at FD would have some nous. Seems they don't sadly.

I hate the new galaxy map changes.. completely. I hate 0.7 fps when calculating routes.. i hate that after waiting 5-10 minutes for them to calculate that the server then bombs me out the game forcing me through it all again, and i hate that something that was already very borked was made worse by adding yet more load onto the galaxy map than was present before powerplay.

The new galaxy map is a downgrade, and makes playing elite dangerous.. awful.
