New to Alpha and need a little help

Hi Guys and Girls

Been watching the many videos around youtube to do with Elite and while watching Scott Manley's again for the 20th time I decide to take the plunge and spend the 200 to get alpha access.

I apologize in advance as im sure this has been asked many times , I have looked but failed to find my answer. I did find a similar question but I gathered it was to do with actual pilot name reservation but not sure.

Anyway , while playing around today I noticed that the name of my pilot is alpha backer and some numbers.
I have looked and looked but have no idea how or if that can be changed so can 1 of you helpful souls point me in the right direction ?

Also ( to do with ingame controls ) I dont seem to be able to slide left and right ( yaw is it ) with the speed that I see people do in videos .. im using the keyboard so is there some other key to speed that up or is it just a side effect of using the keyboard instead of a joystick ?

Welcome to alpha.
Getting your Commander name was a Kickstarter reward and it's not possible to change it in the current Alpha . After the Kickstarter you had to enter your name into the Backers App for approval and it has then turned up in the Alpha. I'm not sure if you have access and can do this at this stage though and you may well have to wait. There are quite a few pilots flying in alpha with the name "Alpha Backer #xxxx".

You are using the "Q", "E", "R", "F" keys to thrust I assume. I believe you are going as fast as everyone else and that what you experience is just a lack of visual cues when in your cockpit. At least I notice no change in the speed I experience when using a controller.

I think you can choose your name of commander later. During beta or gamma?. They will put something in place anyway. The Numbers is temporary

The backer reward was to be able to reserve, on a first come first served basis, your Commander name, as in the final game they will have to be unique.

If they are now all reserved then there's no backers that could object to the new guys having a name.

The issue is, there's no in-game mechanism to do so, and the out of game mechanism had a large portion of human processing involved, and there's no time for that right now! So it's just a matter of waiting for someone to write that bit of code I'd presume now.

Certainly it is temporary.

Ahh I worked out I was pressing the wrong keys finally , was using the yaw keys of A and D and wondered why not much was happening. Once I found the thrust keys you listed I realized my mistake heh.

Thanks everyone else for the help with regards to my commander name. As long as I was not going blind and missing the option in game thats all that matters. If I have to wait then wait it is , at least I can play :D

No I was not able to see it last night lol .. I had not long bought into the alpha and most of my time was spent in game checking things out but I did ask for access last night which was granted while I was at work.

My wallet says he has a lot to answer for I tell ya. I subscribed to his channel for his great kerbal videos which have helped me a ton and I have found very entertaining too. Since then his videos have been responsible for me spending far too much in SC , a few other games and now Elite Dangerous lol.
I was determined not to spend so much and buy into the Alpha , I managed to fight the urge after his initial alpha video but my willpower failed quick time after seeing his alpha 3 vid lol.

I will say he has helped me personally with a couple of ship issues in SC so I guess I can forgive him for emptying my wallet yet again heh

Anyway guys , thanks a bunch for the help :D
