Newcomer / Intro New to Elite Dangerous and this forum

After a break of approx 30 years here at last something I have always dreamed would happen eventually. If it comes down to it Elite, the original BBC PC game has always been regarded as the best ever. I spent hours and hours on it with my floppy disc drive and my Watford Electronics ROMS added to the original BBC PC. More recently played with the emulator on my Windows PC but never recaptured the excitement of the original. Loved the emulator's av rendition of the disc drive loading the game. Never got above dangerous however hard I tried even though I went past the 2nd Special Mission.

The new game looks awesome and my initial experience takes me back to the first minutes and hours I spent on the original game using just a keyboard. I eventually bought a joystick that made life so much easier as I could roll with the Coriolis Space Station and get in unscathed.

So here I am revealing that I will need some really good kit if I am to even get past the training stuff. A joystick is obvious, but which one. I never reached the ability to do anything but use the front gun, so am I going to be faced with that inevitability again. Will I need a joystick for each aspect assuming that there are left, right and rear guns to contend with if I am ever going to get past a "Dangerous" Rating this time. I am retired so have more time available. Hopefully my reactions will not let me down at the age of 62!

Welcome back. I am an old BBC plater too, and still play with just the keyboard. Virtualy any HOTAS Joystick will do the job nicely, and you will be a better PvP fighter, but it really isnt at all mandatory to enjoy the PvE, the AI ships are not as dangerous as a good HOTOS Player at the moment. You need 6 way control at least (doable with Keyboard), 12 way control is what you need to be a ninja, and for that you need HOTOS, not just a "joystick" as you will experienced before.

Guns are very different. Everything points out the front (except turrets, and they target themselves).

There are dedicated Joystick threads where people argue about what is "best" all day long.

Hi and welcome back commander.

There are, dommarraa said, a good number of threads on joysticks.

Simple though.

Have £100+? Saitek x52 - my brother has one and its the business, but I can put some valid perspective on it....

I use a Thrusmaster t flight hotas....sub £40 new for full set up, and it is unbelievable value. Seriously do not know how they make it that cheap, and mine has a minimum of 300 hours on it. Beta onwards

Always nice to welcome new old school Elite players to the fold. ED unfortunately doesn't have the front view, rear view, etc. I miss it tbh :(
Hotas is without a doubt the way to play this game, unless you are a die-hard keyboard and mouse?
I have Saitek X52 Pro (a bit pricey but what can you do) considered by many to be a great bit of kit, and I love it, but get yourself online and check out the 'Top 5' and similar reviews to make sure your happy with cost v quality.
Hope to see you in the void Commander!

there's a variety of viable setups, really. Another one:

Extreme 3d Pro
Keyboard (wasdqerf for Thrusters/Throttle and some other bits)
Voice Attack (for the rest)

Hi and welcome

Former Specy and ST player here now retired and very much enjoying the game. I would invest in a joystick and I also use voice attack too that is fun addition.

Whatever happened to Major Tom (sorry Commander Jameson)?

Thanks for the welcome.

Does anyone know what happened to Commander Jameson; is he still out there?

Are there any plans for a rescue mission or has he gone too far to ever be reached even with our "modern" crafts?

What about "Right on Commander", do we still get rewarded by this?

Does the docking computer still smash your ship on entry?

Are there still Thargons and Thargoids out there?

So many questions.

Don't know about the first two.

There is no "right on commander".

The docking computer has evolved. It gets you through the hatch but I've heard reports it can do some odd things once you are inside the spaceport.

No reliable reports of Thargoids (yet).

Jameson is long dead, but there several stations named after him

Right on commander is sorely missed. Has been requested, nay demanded by many

Docking comouter is surprisingly good. It has been known to smash your shio, but nearly always with extenuating circumstances. A better version is due tomorrow!

Thargoids will be coming at some point. Thise who met the originals hope that day is long in the future

I spotted a system with "discovered by Jameson" tagged against a planet or two. Can't remember where but if I get on again sometime this week I'll try and retrace my steps and find it. It could be DBOBE???

Logitech extreme 3d pro does it for me, is relatively cheap and has a small desktop footprint so you wont look a total wally. I use standard joystick mode which gives a combination of keyboard and joystick

Welcome aboard commander from another beeb and floppy disc dude!
