Newcomer / Intro New to Elite, so a few things

Hello fellow new and experienced commanders!

I'v been playing for a few days, so my seat is wearing in nicely. I have a Joystick set up and have been doing mostly Courier type jobs, nothing too demanding as of yet. I was thinking of doing some exploring further afield, I still have a your basic sidewinder set up, though I've taken the guns off for now. Is there anything I should be trying to upgrade first? I have about 80k in the bank so far.

well, frankly... upgrade to another ship. why? because the sidewinder does not have a very long range and therefore is rather unsuited for exploration. go for the Adder instead.

it is fairly cheap - below 100k.
of course, you may want to upgrade it a little, but the adder also comes with extra storage, so you should be able to make a bit more dough in the process.

Adder is indeed a nice upgrade.
When upgrading your ship, try to upgrade the power distributor as early as possible. A better distributor ensures faster shield reload, faster laser cooldown and faster engine boost loader (more boosts).
When upgrading, always check if your power plant can feed your new setup.

ah yes, the power distributor. suppose that makes sense. In reality I'm going to need quite a bit more cash to do all that.

personally I think a Adder is overstretch for you on your credit reserves ..... go with a Hauler and trade with that and use your Sidey to learn combat

Upgrade the FSD of your sidey, if you are impatient enough as to wait for more money. You should be good for exploring around with that.

Thanks for all the advise. I made a bit of fast cash last night and after a few beers I thought it would be a good idea to buy an adder. I didn't really do much in it, other than jump it into a another system and dock up. it feel nice. I liek that it's right have drive lol

I went from sidewinder to adder to viper then to cobra and finally type-6. My next move is the ASP. I recommend keeping with courier missions until viper, the just get it some gimbaled weapons and go bounty hunting. You can do lots of things with a cobra. I suggest trading but keep the viper in case you need a brake from trading. When you get the Type 6 you can then trade until you can afford an ASP. Make sure you have insurance set aside for all of these ships, you don't want to go back to square one!
After the ASP the rest is yours, you could get a clipper/dropship and go hunting, you could get the type 7 and make some major profits or you could stick with the ASP and go explore the galaxy.

Anyone know where I can get an Adder? I have not been able to find one on my regular area around Eravate.

Thanks!

There should be one in Mbvuraki or LHS 3447 Just keep on travelling around the area until you find one! I started in Eravate

Well a week and has gone by, and though my play time hasn't been huge I was able to make around 600k in a hauler..... I had an accident in my Adder....anyway, mistakes = learning. I sold the hauler yesterday and bought a Cobra. What a ship! Such an upgrade, the options are overwhelming so I need to fit it well for furthering my trading profits. I think I will make some creds, take my time, maybe buy a viper to break up up the grind. My goal is to go deep space exploring in a solid ship.

A hauler is a fine ship for exploring as it's relatively cheap but with a great jump range when you fit it out correctly :

Hello, I'm also new to the Elite. I have made few jumps so far, finished two missions, failed three and managed to kill myself already in a warzone. :D

Now I'm sitting at 1600CR and do not know how to make some money without loosing it all again.

Do you think I should stick to the courrier jobs till I can buy new ship? It seems it will take ages with the pay they offer for the missions though.

Yes do courrier jobs missions, like the slave treading, it nets you between 20k and 30k profit per run. I guess the trick is to find a station where that mission spawns. I'm sure google will help, then you need to sourse the slaves, I found them in a near by anarchy system. it's quick easy money for you sidewinder.

edit: Oh I forgot you need about 20k capital to buy the slaves so do a few low paying ones first to get you up to 20k, then do a few slave missions, you'll have 100k in no time

yes basically fella, its a slow start, but by a hauler, so do a few basic courier mission. to get he money, once u have the hauler, sell its shields and upgrade the fsd to a D cat and max size for you fsd, i.e. cobra it is 4 , the stations will show you engines the same size as the slot and lower not higher so u cant really mess up too bad, u basically want jump distance to increase so you dont have to too many hops.

then use a tool called slopey.

I would of put the link on but this dumb website rules stops any hyper links on ur first few posts

this will give you trade routes and maximum profit.. good luck.. i am mostly in open play so if u see me round eravate shout me.

I did see such missions, but I honestly did not know where to get the slaves from. And I'm on so low money atm. that I will have to do something else before anyway. But thank you for the tip.

I will check it, thank you. I want to be a trader mainly before I will be able to buy some real fighting machine so I will have to investigate the wares part a bit more.

So far I have put in only few hours so I'm still a bit lost.

The quickest money I made when starting out was via bounty hunting at Nav Beacons in my free Sidewinder. I only engaged ships I had already successfully fought against in the combat tutorials: Sidewinders and Cobras, mostly.

Made enough money to buy a Hauler on my first day. Got destroyed a couple of times and lost the bounties I had not already cashed in, but never had to pay insurance, because my Sidewinder was the unmodified loaned model.
