New to exploring... what should I be on the look out for?

So on the way to Colonia, the random route I am apparently taking is going through uncharted space. New situation for me being somewhere nobody has ever been.

What should I be on the look out for?

Found a terran world and a ice moon with biological sites so far. Think there was a system somewhere along the line with an absurd number of stars in the system, but I'd have to backtrack.

Depends on what you're after. :)

If you want to collect some credits along the way, do exobiology and map terraformables, water worlds, ammonia worlds and Earth likes.

Anything strange or unusual is of course nice, along with any pretty scenery on an off planets/moons.
Be on the lookout for glowing green gas giants and helium giants.

if I understand what ESD and FSS is saying, There have been something like 30+ jumps worth of systems that nobody has been in that I've used the FSS to scan. Sadly can't land or do planet scans since I hadn't expected this before I left; so no SRV; and didn't put a repair module on either because, well; first trip to Colonia and didn't quite grasp how the NS boost worked. And since the FSD is damaged, though operational, I'm taking the long haul way and ran into a huge chunk of uncharted space. Apparently.

I somehow suspect the route planner has me taking the long way around.....something lol

I've no idea what I should be after lol
Running into a block of uncharted space where it was even an option was an accident

I just explored I finished visiting every region on the galactic map did really go out to find stuff , I just went . Spent a few years in the black just exploring . Hoping for an alien frying pan but enjoying finding stuff mo man has seen before ( well they all look the same , but you know what I mean )

So you're still discovering what you like.
For myself when I made my first trip I found I liked driving round in the SRV.
At that time geological and biological sites were PoI based so that determined where I went. FSD injection mats also tended to determine what I was looking for.
Of course that would be SRV based.

o_O
what they heck would make this water world worth 1.4m prior to bonus on it's own? I think that's the highest i've seen so far for a single planet....

8 stars? in one system? there are 5 of them. the rest are way far away

Some of them are tripping Observatory's "fast orbit" trigger too at 6.3 hours....that doesn't sound like much....

And why do a lot of the planets look like they don't orbit any of the starts with how they are listed in the system map?

I see you are having fun exploring :)

Well done!

What people are trying to tell you too is that it might be wise to try and get repairs. And even buy a AFMU somewhere or a SRV bay if you can. The colonia highway has loads of stations. You might be near one. Look in eddb.io or esdm.net or inara.cz to find a station for repairs.

Is there a search term I should be specificlly trying for or just "closest station"?

I found three Sheppard moons yesterday. That is when there are moons between rings of a body. It looked awesome but hard to capture in a picture

I also found pretty plants

yeeeeeaaaahhhhhhh..... did a search an the nearest station is nearly 1000 ly away. So apparently the route plotter took me WAAAY out there...

:D
You feel that way now. :)
Soon you'll be measuring distances in kylies* instead of light years, and that station feels like it's almost at a touching distance at mere 1000 ly... ;)

*1 kylie = kilolightyear = 1000 ly

jumping 49 ly at a time. So 1000ish still is a bunch lol

some explorers (myself included) are contributing to a website called Galactic Exploration Catalog (GEC)

it focuses on all POI's in the galaxy and will give you a general idea of what to look out for when exploring. you can also make an account and vote on the POI's, make them your favorite, and if you happen to find something worth sharing you can make your own submission as well....

....good luck out in the black CMDR!

They are orbiting two stars, not one, that x is what's called a barycenter, so they orbit the center of mass of two stars. The highest level known barycenter orbits are for 8 stars, so your planets as above, assuming the stars are A and B would be called AB1, AB2 etc. Orbting 8 stars would be ABCDEFGH1 ABCDEFGH2 etc, keep an eye out for those, be interesting to see 8 stars from the surface of a planet!

Well I marked where it is and it's got a boatload of planets. I was thinking of coming back someday in the far future when I have a fleet carrier for a base and mapping the entire region.
But yeah, the orbits for the planets in that system were all wonky. Most of them had that same 'X' laytout where you said they were orbiting a center of mass rather than an actual star proper? Freaky lol
