New to game some questions.

I have the xbox verson.

1) When I get a bounty hunter mission to kill a target in a certain system, once in the target system how do I located the target?

2) How do I scan planets?

3) How do I deploy my cargo scoop?

4) In the tutorial section, the one that teaches combat, the rectile would follow your target and you would just have to shoot. Now that I'm playing the full game I'm in the starting ship, and i believe I have the pulse laser, why won't I get that same rectile as in the tutorial?

Thanks

1. Just point yourself at any ships you see and the name of the ships pilot will flash up. If you have an FSD interdictor use it on them. Another thing you can do is to check out Unidentified Signal Sources (you'll see them called USS around here). It'll take a few tries but you'll find your mark.

2. Just point yourself at them when you're close enough, you will scan automatically.

1) Specific mission targets with names can be in unidentified signal sources (USS) that pop up (Avoid the strong signal sources - trust me). They can also be flying around requiring an interdictor to get them to drop out of supercruise.
If however, you just have "Kill X pirates" you are best off looking for a ring planet and finding a resource extraction site (RES), watch the asteroids but these have miners, pirates and security ships in. Wait until the scan of the enemy ship completes, if they come up wanted in the bottom left they are probably pirates and can be attacked. If they are clean attacking them makes you wanted.

The easier option to RES sites is the Nav beacons around stars which also have pirates but generally have more smugglers and traders than anything else making it less risky but also less profitable.

2) Scanning planets simply requires you to get close to them, point at them and wait for the information to pop up, the smaller the object the closer you have to be. The closer you are the quicker it scans.
Note: Only planets marked "unexplored" can be scanned.

3) Not sure, not on X-box, sorry. Maybe check keybindings in menu?

4) Gimballed weapons in the outfitting section follow the target in your field of view. Turreted weapons follow the target everywhere. Fixed weapons only follow like 1mm in the middle of your screen. However, Turreted and Gimballed weapons take a damage penalty to make up for their ease of use.

Good luck, if you have further questions feel free to post again :)

1)

You can target NPC ships in super cruise. You should see their name in the bottom left panel and it will indicate if they are a "mission target".

If you have a Frameshift drive interdictor you can target them and pull them out of super-cruise. This is the easiest way.

Or you can follow them around waiting until they exit super cruise, they will leave a wake behind which you can target. Once you are within range you can drop out of super cruise and attack them.

If you can't find the target, you should see 'Unidentified signal sources' on your scanner. Often the target will be located here, you can target them and approach as you would a station. Drop out when you are within range.

2) You need to fit a discovery scanner if you don't already have one. On the PC version there is a binding for the scanner, not sure about the X-Box - maybe it's one of the overlays? You can scan a system as soon as you enter (exit from hyperspace). To scan a planet/star/asteroid-field target it and approach it, you will see the scan progress in the bottom left target panel. More info here

3) As with the discovery scanner there is a button for cargo scoop deploy/retract. On the PC it's a control binding. Perhaps someone else can help with the X-Box version?

4) In the tutorial you were fitted with gimbals or turreted lasers. These will track targets, the catch is they dish out less damage. Go to a station that has an outfitting option and see if you can trade your fixed weapons for gimballed options.

Thanks guys for all you help and answers. Once last question. Should I be taking pirated missions even though I'm only in the starter ships? Oh and what is the different between classic and default controls?

Not 100% sure what you mean by pirated missions. If you mean kill pirates then yes your fine and its a good source of initial money, just be careful not to bite off more than you can chew, running is an option :D Also remember to fully scan first before shooting, until "wanted" pops up in the bottom left they are classed as clean and shooting incurs a bounty on you...

If you mean smuggling and "Kill authority/trader ship" missions I'd avoid them until you are used to combat and the game, they'll get you wanted and you'll probably have to change system to stop the police attacking you :)

I'm at work but don't recall, but it was a mission I got from the bulletin board and I had to get a hostile ship.

Be aware that assassination missions pay well, but are also very hard. Leave them until you are not so new and have a few hundred kills under your belt.

The tips from the others will let you find them, but they may not be alone.
