New to PC version. controller setup help.

Hi all.

Veteran here.
been playing on X1 for since the beginning. I love this game!
bought the game on PC this week while on vacation.

I need to pick someone's brain.
using the mouse and keyboard was a tough pill to swallow.
I am going to use the X1 controller now that im home.
i plugged in the controller and now i have like 4 or 5 more options under controls.

(since im out and unable to look at them myself)
which one of the settings is the most like the X1 setup?

am I most likely going to have to set up and re-configure the whole thing....
is there a way to save the setup in case of some kind of data loss?
Does anyone have any good information they can share that will make my adaptation easier?

Please import your knowledge to me.

I use XBOX 360 controller and the native setup was terrible.

I custom configured mine.

Xbox1 controller has the under paddles which if i had one i would set as thrust left right.

You're best just setting it up the way you like it.

I don't have the Elite controller, just the regular One controller.

Are there any tips or tricks that I should know? subtleties, nuances, etc. ?
Just trying to find out whether or not there are things that work differently on PC versus the Xbox

Yes configure it custom.... I did the same thing (from Xbox to pc) and really liked the Xbox controls, but you won't be able to make them 1:1 the same (mapping a hold to one of the face buttons doesn't work the same on pc). I set the landing gear to a click of the left stick and simultaneous bumpers for the frame shift drive. Going to take same tweaking but you'll get there, feels weird when I go back to the Xbox one now...

Honestly it depends on your brain and play style.

Here is an example of an idiosyncrasy of my brain.

The default Controller setup in Game set the trigger buttons to fire primary and secondary.... sounds fair enough right.. in FPS game you use the trigger to shoot.

But because im in a cockpit the triggers in my brain are for go forward and reverse like in a car game.

So i made the bumpers the weps triggers and the triggers the throttle.

Each to their own i guess.

Took me hours to get it right.

I have a Hotas as well... HOURS again getting it right.

custom is key.

This is more or less the setup I still use... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ssion-thread?p=2702151&viewfull=1#post2702151

Hmm... you make me want to share my control assignment as well.

So, Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710, set to Direct mode instead of X (Xbox) mode which is necessary for greater controller functionality. I'd recommend the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 instead, if you can still find it, with a similar setup, since it has full multi-axes range of motion and reception at greater distances, about 25 feet line of sight instead of 10.

This control setup is very extensive and will essentially provide all needed and currently available control options at easy reach with an intuitive layout.

If you're using a similar style controller (Xbox/PS), I recommend using a similar setup, especially for the flight controls, power management, UI panels, and headlook.

These bindings are secondary and on top of the classic keyboard only preset so that the keyboard can be used as an emergency backup controller device and to avoid mouse control interference.

- Left stick vertical movement: set throttle location up or down with movement; and landing override to thrust forward and backward; and galactic map forward and backward axis control

- Left stick horizontal movement: yaw axis control; and galactic map yaw axis control

- Left stick button: boost

- Right stick vertical movement: pitch axis control (pull back to pitch up); and galactic map pitch axis control

- Right stick horizontal movement: roll axis control

- Right stick button: target ahead object

- Direction pad up, down, left, right: thrust up, down, left, right; and galactic map move up, down, left, right; and UI panel up, down, left, right

- X button, Y button, B button, A button: increase power to systems, engines, weapons (and UI panel/menu back), reset power distribution (and UI panel/menu select)

- Left brake button: use secondary weapon/scanner; and galactic map zoom out; and UI panel previous

- Right brake button: use primary weapon/scanner; and galactic map zoom in; and UI panel next

- Left trigger: hold for flight assist off

- Right trigger: target highest threat

- Start button: hold and direction pad up, down, left, right to rotate headlook POV up, down, left, right; release to reset POV forward

(For the following combos hold the back button first, press and release the additional button/trigger as many times as desired, then release the back button.)

- Back button & right stick button: target next system in route

- Back button & X button, Y button, B button, A button: use shield cell bank, use FSD, launch chaff, toggle landing gear

- Back button & left brake button: toggle weapons/sensor deployment

- Back button & right brake button: cycle target to next ship

- Back button & left trigger (as needed for ship role and loadout): set throttle to 0; or toggle silent running; or toggle cargo scoop; or deploy heat sink; or toggle lights

- Back button & right trigger: cycle target to next subsystem

- Back button & start button: cycle UI panel focus

Sorry for not being more helpful but get a HOTAS for christmas. You can already get a decent setup for ~ 35€.

Yes, this is true. One of the best, and probably most reliable, HOTAS setups on the market, costs LESS than a new Xbox One controller. Well worth the £35. Makes keyboard easier to access as well. Stick it between the HOTAS modules. :)

I am having issues with the alternate controls
I set Alternate to Ls click.
I use this for docking, left stick goes from roll L/R to lateral thrust L/R.
For whatever reason, the directions are reversed and i cant seem to get them
right.
There was also an issue with Boost being "B" and having landing gear set to "B+Down" like the X1.
Im not fond of an immediate boost when my gear goes up or when i think it is about to go down...
I fixed this one. Had a similar problem on X1 b4.
I think i worked out most of the other controls pretty well.
Help with alt controls
Should i/do i need to set up the docking override controls and what will that do for me?

I did however have an unfortunate experience right away.
I completed my first mission! Realized that some controls were wrong.
I went into the menus to make changes and was blown up by an npc.
Sad day for a new CMDR.

Hello out there CMDRs
Im back and in the same situation as before.

I have tried to set the controls the way i like.
I am having an issue getting some of the controls to go inverted/regular.
Xbox One controller.
Left stick click for alternate, but I cannot get the lateral thrusters to go the right directions!!
Right is left and left is right, and that's not right!
There is no option to switch this.
What gives?
Also, landing overrides? Cant i just disable that entirely? No? What the phoo!

Most everything else is good. If i ever have to do any fance flying, im dead!

Help a noob to PC version out! (Only noob here, one the XOne i have almost 8 weeks)

Get Voice Attack!!!! Then get a voice pack like Astra or Orion Go ahead and spend the money on a xbox elite controller or go with the hotas.

For the moment I'm stuck using what I've got so I'm just trying to configure it to work the way that I'd like
Getting the lateral thrusters to work properly would be crucial
I plan on owning a HOTAS pretty shortly here

I think I will be getting the thrustmaster 16000m to start.

But in the meantime I still have to deal with an Xbox one controller

I don't have any controller advice, but I do strongly recommend getting a HOTAS or similar setup. Your. Life. Will. Change. [big grin]

I use my Logitech XBox style controller in Direct instead of X mode since the last time I tried I couldn't reassign all the buttons in X mode, which admittedly was probably over a year ago.

I generally prefer Direct mode anyway, even though you can sometimes lose some functionality with some newer games, because it's a less proprietary setup. (I like being able to do what I want with my own controller.)

Seconded! I bought a Warthog A-10 which is a monster of a HOTAS, but it completely changes things. It basically goes from "I'm playing a game" to "I am actually flying a spaceship!"

Im not currently able to look at my settings page in-game but you need to open all the drop down boxes (in the contol setting) and locate your x-axis invert option. If you are having difficulties locating this option then on the upper right corner of the control options page, there is a drop down for pre-sets. Set it to 'classic default' or i think it may be just classic, and this should set all axis' to a non-inverted state. This eill aleo change any custom button config to the xbone config.

The 16000 hotas is very expensive. I may suggest you a logitech extreme 3d pro to start.
Super confortable, a real life changer. Cannot go back

I had to setup custom bindings for my XBGP.. standard controls suck!
using VA as well, I don't have to touch keyboard at all.
mouse is disabled from use in game.
if you want pm ur EM add and I will send you a copy my key bindings.
