New to the forum. FPS question.

Hello all I have been following elite for a couple of months now and I am quite excited about the way it is progressing, my question which may have been asked before but my search resulted in no info is what kind of framerate can I expect with
i7 4770
GTX 660
32g ram
No solid state drive.

Will this be enough to use a rift.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Welcome commander,

should be MORE than enough for the DK1 to run smoothly at least.

I have i7 2600K 3.4GhZ
GTX 560 Ti
16GB

When not using the rift I have smooth frame rates of above 60fps outside the space station. Slight drop in the station but still very smooth and I often record 1080p videos of my game play. You will no doubt get very nice frame rates indeed sir.

I use the DK1 and its the most playable game I've seen for that setup.

Thank you for the reply Zeewolf, so is that 60fps viewed with the oculus. What would the minimum fps be to run smoothly with the oculus and lastly is your gpu comparable or faster than mine. Sorry for all the questions and thankyou.

your CPU should be faster.

I can't give you exact frame rates that I get with the rift as I've honestly not checked and the FPS counter is a bit hard to read in the rift. I must remember to press it next time I record a rift video. All I can tell you is its very smooth in combat but drops considerably in the space station but remains highly playable.

If you are planning on purchasing a new Oculus Rift you will be looking at a DK2 now anyway which may well require a more powerful computer.

You have more ram and a better graphics card (well newer model anyway) than Zeewolf

I was thinking, if need be upgrading to a 780ti if it will fit in my mid tower.

Thank you both for the replies.

You have a top of the line machine mate. The graphics card should still be fine for the current Rift, at least.

Hmmm judging by the power of the computer in the lunar module in '69, you'll get to proxima centauri with that rig......

I know this is a bit off topic, and I'm sure this has been asked before (I just haven't been able to find an answer using the search tool). But here it comes anyway. How do you enable the FPS display while playing the game? I gave in over the weekend and upgraded to Alpha. I have a fairly new laptop, so performance is not an issue right now. But I'm curious to know exactly what framerate I'm getting.

Thanks and sorry about the threadjack.

Best guestimates is that the game will be released in Sept 2014, so by investing in hardware for that purpose now, you may miss out on advanced/cheaper hardware you could have purchased when you actually needed it.

Even if you want to play pre-release, I wouldn't be spending money on hardware in attempting to compensate for the expected inefficiencies of alpha/beta builds. Just wait till FD are happy with it, as by then, you can make the best decision.

On the other hand, if you're rich ...

I did look at that card and considered not eating out for a month :)

Unfortunately it would mean a near-complete rebuild for me, so I'm just going to have to wait.

Of course, a new build isn't out of the question come bonus time :) Maybe save up the pennies and check out Broadwell.
