New to the game, bit lost.

Hi all,

i bought into the beta today after watching a few videos today. But now i'm kind of lost what to start with. I got the basics of flying/shooting/docking down, i accepted a mission to kill 3 pirates, but only found one. Are the systems in the mission list just suggestions? Do i have to search the whole system? In short how do i find pirates exactly?

What other of stuff is there to do. I accepted a mission where i had to procure some stuff but i had no clue where to find the items and the mission expired.

To find pirates in a system you need to enter supercruise and head to the various planets and other features within a system. As you travel you should see various unidentified signal sources appear, target one of those and head towards it and exit supercruise like usual when you're within 1000km. These are random events so you might find some abandoned cargo, you might find one or more ships. Scan the ships to see if they're wanted, then blow them up and collect your reward. Resource extraction sites are also good places to find pirates.

For the procurement missions you need to head to another system that you think has the product (the galaxy map tells you what kind of economy a system has). Buy the product head back. Make sure the mission pays more than the regular price though as some of those guys definitely don't pay top dollar.

Might be worth spending a bit of time (and fuel) visiting the different types of systems near the start to see what they offer.

For example, agricultural worlds sell food (duh ;) ), extraction sell minerals, refineries accept mineral ores and produce metals, industrial take metals and produce machinery, most systems want food and medicines, etc etc.

That should give you a decent idea of where to buy stuff for the missions, and lay the groundwork for trading (if that floats your boat).

Good luck!

Alright thanks! This info helps alot. Scanning is just putting a lock on a ship right? Or am i missing something there too? Sometimes is get the message someone is scanning me, but i thought scanning a ship is locking on to it.

Thanks! Time to break out the old note pad and take some notes on stuff :D

Hello and welcome.

I'm sorry you're having a rough time of it, but there are some thing to bear in mind.

You refer to the 'game', this isn't yet a game. It is a 'beta', this means it is a collection of things that are being tested in order to make a game. Many thing are not yet working correctly, such as trends lists, comma, docking etc.

Imagine getting into a concept car at the Geneva motor show. It looks like a car, some bits might even function (the dashboard, the doors, the steering) other bits might not (no engine, brakes from a mini, suspension with no damping).

It is intended to show what the final game will be like, but if you took it for a drive you would be disappointed!

ED beta s just like the concept car. Understand that and you will enjoy it a lot more.

Almost! Get the target lock on it, and then point your ship towards the target. After a few moments some information will be revealed in the target view (left of the radar): The ship commander's name and whether or not he/she is wanted. If the commander is wanted, it's a pirate. This is all standard targeting behaviour that you can get with all ships.

You can buy additional scanning modules for your ship. One can scan for cargo, and the other (warrant scanner?) can check for additional bounties gained in other space systems. That message you mention is when another ship is using one of these modules on you. Police will do that when checking for illegal/stolen cargo, pirates for any cargo, and bounty hunters for the additional bounties.

Best accepting missions where they give you the stuff free to transport for them for payment. Otherwise if you accept a payment to get them stuff you really need to know where you will get it from before you accept.

But remember this is just beta so a lot of these missions are very basic and some dont work properly yet.

Best thing to do in the beta is try out all the gameplay such as pirating, cargo hauling, fighting, exploring, bounty hunting, etc to help prepare you for the full game sio when you start playing properly you dont make any daft newbie mistakes. Its a big complex game already but its going to get a lot bigger yet!

Welcome :)

A couple of ideas:
  • Trade a bit either using missions or picking commodities yourself.
  • Use the cash you make to upgrade your weapons/ship.
  • To find pirates - head to a navigation beacon.
  • To fight NPCs/PvP - Go to Earanin > Eranin 2.. near there is a Federal distress scenario. (easy cash and combat practice). When you get there - use the right panel > functions and pick a faction to fight on behalf of.

Fly safe Commander!
