Once Power Play goes live, I plan on supporting the Federation as much as I can, but I have no idea what's going on with the lore of the universe. With the Federation president having gone missing, I figured it would be a good time to catch up on what I've missed thus far. Are there any places that have nice summaries, or am I stuck reading tonnes of material?

Recent history summary (Feel free to correct any of this, this is all my personal impressions).
Empire:
Emperor Duval sick. nobody knows true details of how sick or whats going on.
Duval Children + Patreus competing for favour of Empire looking for a claim to the throne.
Patreus military but expansionist, attacked Quivera for being in debt displacing citizens and leading to Duval children sending aid (arms and weapons from the two children respectively).
One of Duval children anti-corruption, led investigation into murder attempt that I forgot to mention. Findings currently being presented to Imperial senate, waiting on response/results.
Federation:
President Halsey opposed to Tanmark onionhead rare good, tried to contain but it ended up boosted in production due to community efforts.

Shadow president trying to gain favour for takeover before president and Vp go missing (presumed dead by some forum members - ME

Search for president/vp ship currently ongoing.

As unbiased as I can be, given I have been on one side or the other in some of this.
The Empire
The Emperor announced his Son, Harald Duval was no fit to rule and thus announced so before the Senate.
It was later revealed that the Emperor has an Affair with the Lady Lavigny and Arrisa Lavigny is his daughter.
The Emperor announced that he was to marry the Lady Lavigny , which would effectively make Arrisa the Heir to the Empire
The Emperor however falls in a coma before the wedding takes place and is still in a Coma
Senator Patreus has been expanding his power base by lending money to independent systems, be buy weapons he sells them, then changes the repayments until they cannot be met, resulting in his seizing the systems citizens and selling them as Imperial Slaves.
It is likely he creates the threats that cause the independent systems to want the weapons in the first place.
Several systems have fallen to this modus operandi already.
Recently Senator Patreus has been seen socialising with Aisling Duval, Prince Harald's Daughter, the Emperor's granddaughter.
Senator Torval runs backs many of the mining corporations worked by Imperial Slaves.
Her followers basically enjoy a decedent lifestyle on the backs of slave, and I mean this as so much more so than regular Imperial Society.
She often runs programs to buy up lots of "unregulated" slaves and retraining them as Imperial Slaves, who in theory can earn their freedom, as Indentured servants.
The only question is do those poor souls end up in the mines or are they actually getting a better deal.
Princes Aisling, is the Media Socialite and Anti- Slavery advocate.
He followers buy up Imperial Slaves and gift them to the Princess, so she might do with them as she pleases.
She frees a lot of them, basically paying their debts as Imperial Slaves, but a lot of them stay on to serve her.
She recently lost a bet with Torval on whose platform was more popular, and as a result has to keep a group of Imperial slaves in her household.
I believe they are singers and entertainers. Whilst the Anti-slavers did well, the Slave traders were where the CRs were and money talks.
She is rich and uses her influence so what she sees as a social good.
Often people say she is an Air head based on the quotes of hers on GalNet, but we know how reporters love to take quotes out of context.
The Debate in where she fits in the order of Succession is a long one.
Arrisa Lavigny-(Duval) is the Emperors illegitimate daughter.
Since the Emperor never married her mother, the fact that she has started hyphenating her name is a bit of presumption on her behalf, however she seemed to be the Emperor's favoured Heir so many still consider her such.
She is a Princess on way or the other as her (other) father was Prince Aristide Lavigny.
She has the backing of Chancellor Blaine, who has been running the Empire since the Emperors health meant he retired from the Public life during the last few years.
She recently uncovered an assassination plot, which involved poisoning the comatose Emperor, and traced it back to a Cliens of Senator Patreus.
Patreus denied knowledge, and some see it as a move by her to destabilize a political foe. She has been working with the survivors of Patreus' latest war by arming them. She is also assisting Aisling, her niece, which makes it an interesting triangle with Aisling and Patreus socialising.
Meanwhile
The Federation needed last year suffering from Apathy, and the Shadow President Hudson - leader of the opposition party in the Federation- calling for Conscription.
Several Frontier Federation systems voted on independence as they felt their Federal Taxes were going to the core and not to them, thus no benefit to it.
Kappa Fornacis, an Independence system, came to the forefront of the news when it was found that Onionhead, a drug grown there, was a cause social problems in the Federation.
The Federation outlawed Onionhead; which just caused it to move to the black market.
President Halsey ordered in the Federal Navy to blockade.
Admiral Vincent, Bombed Panem, which caused an outcry.
President Halsey was blamed, but she said it was done under commanders prerogative and she didn't order it specifically.
This still didn't stop the onionhead problem, so it was virus bombs with a targeted bioweapon that killed only the onionhead flowers.
A Rebuilding effort is then championed by the Federation to get Panem's farmers back on their feet selling legal goods
By this time however, a new cultivar of Onionhead - Lucan Onionhead - was being grown in the Tanmark system.
It was sufficiently different to side step the Federal Ban
Lucan Onionhead is then banned.
It is found that the Lucan Onionhead isn't fertile so dies out, but thanks to the Federation rebuilding effort the Panem, Kappa Fornaics, starts growing the original Onionhead again.
The Federation is distracted by the Lugh Crisis at this time
Before I go on to that, the Vice President of the Federation dies on Mars due to a "Heart Attack" but with all the telltale signs it was an assassination.
In the New Year, the system of Lugh Declares independence and there is a massive civil war between the Crimson State Group and the Federation.
Millions upon millions die as the Federation gains control of the space in the system, but before they can land marines the Lugh forces gain control of the Primary Station which controls the System defense net.
Mass defections by the mercenary pilots then cause the federation to lose the Space war and pull back.
President Halsey got the blame again for not having the troops ready to invade when needed, and for ordering the strike against a convoy that was supposed to be the leaders of the rebellion but turned out to be Federal civilians.
[All this was from the results of various Community goals]
Given the constant personal attacks Shadow President Hudson makes on the President, that Hudson and Admiral Vincent are best buddies and the mysterious death of the Vice president, (which has NEVER been mentioned again) it can be suggested that the failures of the President have been engineered to tank her approval rating, as under the Federation Constitution she was coming due for a vote of Confidence.
Now the President and Vice President are missing Presumed Dead, Ms Winters the Secretary of State as HRAO is in charge but likely an election will be called and Congressman Hudson will President.
Elsewhere
The Alliance has been looking for peaceful means to expand.
A pirate Group tried to turn the "Old Worlds" a part of Alliance space into the New Carribian, but are slowly being squashed after some inital successes.
78 Ursea Majoris became to first system to peacefully change form the Federation to the Alliance using in game rules, it was previously an enclave of the Federation in the Alliance.
The System of Liaedin is a similar Imperial Enclave in the Federation that tried to expand into it but was pushed back.
There is some dispute of the methods used in Liaedin.
Several Unknown Artifacts were "recovered" from a Federal convoy and it seems to be of non human origin.

As the official Galnet site only goes back to the 6th of January 3301 for some reason (I assume this is when the Galnet site was first put up), I have found the following resource goes back further (to September 3300), although the host seems to have stopped updating it at the end of March, no doubt due to the new official Galnet site. The creator has even set up tagging on posts, so for instance you can scroll down and select factions/individuals/systems/stations and planets to find any Galnet articles relating to your particular inquiry. The utility of this feature is great and I only wish the creator had kept going with the project.
