New to VR and have a question or two.

Hello Commanders,

I've been thinking about purchasing a vr headset for this game, however, due to the cost of the HTC Vive, and the lower price of the oculus, I was thinking about going with that. However, I was thinking about buying an older version of the Rift, such as the DK1 or DK2 so I wasn't spending an arm and a leg for something that didn't suite me a whole lot, etc etc. Do the older models still work for Elite, or am I wasting my time looking for them?

Much appreciated o7

I think you should certainly get an Oculus with Touch. That is the current benchmark for VR immersion. Vive is close behind, but he headset isn't as comfortable and the controller certainly don't bring the same level of prescence. Visual fidelity is comparable.

Elite is amazing, but once you experience a game designed and polished of VR, like Lone Echo. You won't look back.

Get a DK2 for round the £100 mark. Elite works great with it. If the VR bug gets you, resell it for not much less if you're lucky and splash out on the full kit - the upgrade is certainly worth the investment, but the DK2 is a good way to test the waters. Avoid the DK1 for simplicity's sake (I don't think it has head tracking). You won't need touch controllers if you're only interested in Elite.

I think if you're going to make the jump, do it as best you can. Just get the CV1, mate

(edit: I mean, my pref is the Vive but if you're unsure, you can't beat a CV1 on special and at that price I wouldn't bother getting the DK versions)

Whatever you do, don't get a DK1, as it is absolutely not representative of consumer-grade VR. Text is illegible due to low resolution, and no positional tracking makes is very nausea-inducing. With its price slashed, the Rift CV1 is currently the best value proposition for VR, and I say this as very satisfied Vive owner.

I have tested both Vive and Rift CV1 and had the opportunity, to test both DK1 and DK2 Rifts as well. I own a Rift CV1 since launch day and my personal experience is, that the developer versions arent even close to the CV1 and the Vive. In my opinion it would be a terrible mistake to buy a DK.
For me, the Rift CV1 won over the Vive, especially for simulator games, but there are different opinions with both reasonable pros and cons. Leave the DKs out of the equation. They will do only harm. Choose one of the big two.
