NEW Trade route finder - Fun, easy + open play - Pilot fishing

Hi Chaps,

If you are a bit like me;

Not interested really in the grind

Not really interested in using third party tools and would rather be drinking tea and messing about for fun and profit

Want to have some fun and find routes in game without messing around with charts and making countless notes

Venturing in to open play and a bit broke.

Well here's a way to find those amazing trade routes.

I call it Pilot Phising

1) Get a small ship like a Haluer or similar
2) Strip it down and refit the basics (all D class and and A class drive)
3) Add a cargo scanner, wake scanner and fuel scoop
4) Play in open play, keep an eye out for commanders in big trade ships
5) Scan them to see what they are carrying and if you are interested follow their wake to the sources of the trade

You could have some fun, meet new players and explore in the safety of being in the wake of a whale or a shark. A bit like a pilot fish

Plus it will get you in to the swing of playing with other players directly in time to get in to Wings in 1.2 and who knows what adventure you may have ... beyond the spreadsheet...

Give it a go and fly safe. If you'd rather not, that's fine.

What do you think?

A couple people were discussing this shortly after they fixed the infinite commodity issue. I think it's rather ingenious myself, though limited in scope. To supplement you can also keep tabs on traffic in/out of a system on the bulletin board. The traffic tally tends to climb up and down a bit though for some odd reason.

Well if they are doing a 1 jump trade route that will work. You can't wake scan in super cruise so if they jump more than once you can't follow...not that they'd still be there by the time you scan and jump if they are doing more than 1 jump anyway.

All you need to know is that ~2000 CR is the upper limit, I'm not telling you to use a spreadsheet. Once you found a route that is close to that you can stop looking for a while.

Thanks! Hadn't thought of watching the traffic too.

I try and immerse myself in the game and the Pilot Fish way of finding trade routes really is fun and suits my role play approach to the game.

Sorry you have completely missed the point. No third party tools (like websites, apps etc) and doing something different in the game itself that can lead to adventure.

I think this is an interesting low-tech (if starships are lowtech) method to get into trading, as in getting your mind wrapped around some of the physical aspects. Sometimes it's easier to look and learn than to read and learn. Like you mention, it's good practice for maintaining a group flight. It also just sounds like fun. It was an enjoyable pastime even with NPCs when I played Freelancer, just tag along and see where they were going.

Repped for bringing a clever bit of fun. THIS is what people mean by "using your imagination", folks. Not to fill in gaps where the game is empty, but to make something interesting for yourself and others out of what's already here. There will only be more of that as time goes on.

Lol... whatever you do there is always someone complaining :)

Indeed.

InMemoriamSirocco, Yes :D If you want to get rich easily, don't reinvent the wheel just follow the money.

Tarman, you see my point perfectly! Phew.

Excellent use of the tools at your disposal :)

Ben, you deserve a medal for this, but as I have no idea where you are, I am unable to post it to you. As an alternative, feel free to use your new-found tracking skills (Ray Mears would be proud) to trace your tea supply back to it's source, which if I'm not mistaken, will probably be 'the kitchen'. In that location you should be able to locate one of it's principle constituent ingredients... milk (just look around for a large, possibly white or silver, cabinet with a light inside). If you are very fortunate, at the top of the glass milk container there will be a small silver disk suitable for producing a reasonable substitute for the medal you deserve.
Wear it with pride :D
