New Unlimted Detail video

Hi folks.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but there is a new video on youtube showing off Euclideon's Unlimited Detail Engine. It looks mighty impressive. I wonder how long it will be before we see it being used for games.

Probably never? How does it handle animation? Physics? There are other projects that are more promising and less hype. I'm sure it will have it's uses, but probably not in games.

Oh this is interesting, first time you can see how it works. It's a point cloud renderer. objects near the camera become point clouds. They also seem to have problems with transparency sorting, the outlines of the trees look wrong.

I'm sure I saw some videos a couple of years ago from a company that was working on point cloud rendering. The footage I saw was of stonework, temples and stuff. They made a point of showing the detail on a path that was covered in little pebbles etc.

EDIT: Yep, it's the same company. Here is the video I saw.

Which other projects? I would like to hear about them. I am glad you asked about animation and physics. The videos I have seen are not animated. The way this engine uses particles though is just like finite element analysis, so I think modelling fluids and other motion would be a breeze.

Thank you very much, Oddball, for the post and video about this amazing technology. I sincerely hope Frontier Developments look into how they might be able to use this technology.

I have been following this from the start. From all I have seen (demo's, interviews etc.) I'd have to say I do not trust it one bit. There is far too much overblown sales pitch in everything they show and say.
The way they go about it reminds of those tv channels that want me to buy a new knife set or a juicer so I can finally lead a happy life ever after.
The interview I saw was just like a scripted play. It felt fake all the way.

3D graphics innovator John Carmack says the technology is potentially feasible in the near future: "[N]o chance of a game on current gen systems, but maybe several years from now."

and:

"I do not think non-polygonal renderers will be the winning choice in the next five years, but someone will probably have a go at it and learn something.

and:

"I write a voxel tracer every five years or so..."

So, no I do not think FD should bother with it at the moment. I'd rather have them create Elite.
