New VKB Space Throttle

Interesting ....

I like the idea of it, but I think I'd miss the buttons under my finger tips. I guess it's supposed to be a hybrid of omni-throttle and stecs throttle.
I could be wrong but to me it looks pretty weak compared with my X56 Throttle. IMO, my X56 with my VKB Evo Flightstick are the best combo for ED. All the extra switches and knobs are so handy and to this day I've still not mapped them all. If my throttle ever popped it's clogs, I'd scour 2nd hand for another x56 throttle. Pity Logitech aren't the most reliable. IMO neither VKB, Virpil or even stepping down to Thrustmaster, have ever done a throttle which makes me want to swap out the X56 throttle for Elite Dangerous.

That's a personal preference that reflects your flight style. Elite tries really hard to be "WWII planes in space", but the simple fact of the matter is that a 3D controller for translation is simply superior, even with "WWII planes in space."

It's basically a 3DConnexion controller. The Star Citizen whales will buy it because it has military detailing text on it.

The question is whether or not it will sit in a price range reflective of that. It's not going to be cheap, either way.

took 45 mins to do an e mail must have been a novel:ROFLMAO:
is it just me or does the idea of the one button wheel seem counter productive when it comes to text typing speed
if disabled however what a godsend🤷‍♂️
(edit only just realised this was a parody:LOL:)

The analogue proportional thumb stick on my x56 does translation very nicely. BTW, I assume, we're talking about the same thing by 'translation' wrt to how it fits into 6DOF movement. Otherwise, I have no idea.

I thought the planes in space analogy was interesting, I think sometimes that's true, like when I'm flying over a planet. When I'm cold orbiting an interceptor, not so much. Lots and lots of Thargoids out here in the Pleiades still.

I do like the tilt axis, but I didn't see any analog ministicks on that new VKB throttle, just some conventional hats. It's also got too many controls that one needs to remove their hand from the throttle to actuate. Fine for slower paced flight sims, but rough or just redundant for faster paced combat titles.

I'm still looking for an ideal successor to my CH Fighterstick + Pro Throttle stuff. I wouldn't consider buying another set of CH, largely because the accuracy is relatively poor (old-school pots attached to 8-bit encoders), but the overall layout is better than almost anything else.

Only thing that really comes close to my ideal, at the moment, is the Virpil CDT-VMAX.

As for "planes in space", ED has never really done that. It's always been a 6DoF flight model, and the random collection of constraints it's implemented can't change that.

Looks cool, but not ideal for Elite Dangerous because you have throttle that controls the forward/reverse direction in normal space and super cruise (forward only) and separate thrust inputs in up/down, strafe left/right and forward/reverse directions.

Originally, I ran the ThrustMaster TWCS throttle for forward and reverse throttle with the mini stick in the handle as my up/down, strafe left/right thrust axis with the forward/reverse thrust axis being unbound. This worked well enough, but the mini stick was too short of a throw to be much good.

I picked up the left-handed VKB Gladiator NXT EVO Omni to go along with my right-handed Gladiator. I tried using it as a pure throttle with no spring return but found that was less than ideal. I then used a throttle stick that was 3d printed and attached to the analog throttle in the center of the base and switched the main stick back to spring returned centering. This worked well, but the 3d sticks kept breaking and you had to remove your hands from the stick to adjust the throttle and back to the stick to press any buttons. You can see the 3d printed stick in the image below.

What I've found to be ideal for me is using the omni throttle for up/down, strafe left/right and forward/reverse thrust directions and using my ThrustMaster TWCS Throttle as the throttle. In super cruise it works well and has enough buttons and switches to that I don't need to move my hand to the Omni Throttle. In normal space I zero the TWCS and use the Omni. I can also use the TWCS when scooping by setting the speed or using it anything I might want to run a set speed, like when I'm boosting away from something. In a dog fight I put the THCS to 50% and use the Omni for directional control. This puts the throttle in the blue zone and the forward/reverse thrust overrides the throttle when reversing or exceeding 50% throttle in the forward direction.

I really like this setup; it really controls the ship very well in all directions and I feel like I'm flying a ship.

True. The module with all the controls is an optional "STEM" module, though. The actual throttle base without any optional modules attached looks like this.

Interesting.
I use a VKB Omni Throttle as well for up/down, left/right, forward/reverse thrusters, just like you. I don't use a another throttle device, though. In fact, I haven't set up a throttle axis at all, I control the throttle via buttons. Fire 1 on the Omni Throttle increases the throttle, Fire 2 = 100%, red A2 = decrease, grey B1 = full stop. That works well enough for me.

I have those setup as well, but I like having the throttle axis, with super cruise boost it works better for me and I feel more like I'm flying the ship rather than pushing buttons... Besides, the TWCS was just gathering dust and I didn't have to purchase anything else.

I like having a forward only throttle axis (for extra granularity without having to mess with detents), plus separate analog control for all thruster axes--that, in the case of forward/reverse thrust override the throttle setting. I would normally have vertal/lateral thrust on a thumbstick and the forward/reverse thrust overrides on the toe breaks of my rudder pedals.

Too few buttons under the fingertips. I am very very happy using the nxt evo as a hosas and have a logitech throttle unit which I only use for flight sims.
I am very curious to know though, what do people use the minimouse and wheel functions for? All I have is sensor zoom for a wheel, but other than that... ?

This new VKB throttle jumps out at me because - as a lefty - it's the first time I've seen a proper, right-handed throttle available at a reasonable price. Simply due to that, I'll very interested to see how this might work in ED.
My current set up is a left-handed Gladiator NXT EVO and - coming back from a long time away from the game - I was thinking about getting a right-handed Omni Throttle. I might hold off for a month or two and see what the reviewers and early adopters make of this new one...
