Hi, I am a fairly new player of Planet Zoo and I have recently been looking through some threads about New Zealand animal ideas as we literally have zero representation in the game so I decided to come up with some ideas for a New Zealand Themed pack idea but with exhibit animals and plants in mind as well.

Before I start I would just like to say that I understand that New Zealand is not realistically represented in a lot of zoos worldwide however that shouldn't exclude them from being a concept idea in a zoo game where you have creative control over the zoos you create ( especially in sandbox mode ), in fact because New Zealand is not represented realistically worldwide that gives us the chance to get more creative with thinking about what a New Zealand zoo section might look like since we don't have a lot of examples for reference.


Habitat Animal Ideas:
  • Great Spotted Kiwi
  • Yellow Eyed Penguin
  • Kākāpō
  • Takahē
  • New Zealand Sea Lion
  • New Zealand Fur Seal

Exhibit Animal Ideas:
  • Tusked Wētā
  • Giant Wētā
  • Cave Wētā
  • Archey's Frog
  • Tuatara
  • Lesser short-tailed bat

Plant/Tree Ideas:
  • Kauri
  • New Zealand Flax
  • SIlver Fern
  • Manuka
  • Kōwhai
  • Nīkau Palm

These are mainly just my picks for what I would put in a New Zealand themed DLC pack, let me know which animals/plants you guys would pick for this type of pack!

I’d love for New Zealand to finally get some animals in the game! Even if its species are not the most common in zoos, it’s such a unique part of the world that it deserves to be represented in some form. I’d choose different species in some cases though - animals like the great spotted kiwi, yellow-eyed penguin, kakapo and New Zealand sea lion, as cool as they are, currently have no captive populations unfortunately (even in NZ itself, where they are occasionally kept temporarily for rehabilitation at the most).

The species from New Zealand I’d most like to see would be (in order of preference):
  • North Island brown kiwi (the icon the myth the legend. The standard kiwi in captivity)
  • Little penguin (only NZ penguin in zoos aside from the vagrant Fiordland penguins kept at Taronga, also double up as Australian rep)
  • Tuatara [E] (most unique reptile on earth)
  • South Island takahe (the orb)
  • Paradise shelduck (beautiful waterfowl with a decent captive presence)
  • New Zealand fur seal (only NZ pinniped in zoos)
  • Weka (the raccoon of NZ)
Of these, I only see the first three having much chance of ever making it into the game though unfortunately.

And of course if flying birds become a possibly, kea would be a necessity while red-crowned kakariki, kaka, kereru and morepork would be cool too.

And any and all plants from NZ would be welcome! Besides the species you listed, I’d also really like a southern beech/Nothofagus species.

I totally want some NZ animals, but i highly doubt well ever get an NZ pack. Reason being that a NZ pack really only has ground birds to offer as habitat animals besides the seals. And Frontier really doesnt like birds, and is seemingly avoiding them at all cost. So i just dont see them making a full pack of them

The kiwi and little blue still have a chance being added in an islands or even temperate pack tho

As far as I've been told by actual zoo keepers in NZ, Paradise ducks, Yellow-crowned & Red-crowned kakariki are or at least were somewhat commonly kept in many European collections (early 2000- 2010), with Kea being almost a staple at that time. Kiwi, Kaka & Tuatara well fewer in number, are still decently represented in zoos globally- I know for a fact that numerous Zoos in Europe & America house collections as well as at least one in Asia, so it kind of sucks that NZ has zero species in the game under the Oceania umbrella yet.
My (realistic) picks for the game:

North Island Brown Kiwi
Kea
New Zealand fur seal
Little penguin
Tuatara

Plants: (again commonly kept globally):
Cabbage tree/ Cordyline australis
New Zealand flax (phormuim)
Pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa)
New Zealand hebes (shrub)
Puriri (vitex lucens)
Mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium)

Build bits:
Mesh pieces- a larger range of sizes & shapes.
Small & medium log, branch & rock decor with severely reduced hitbox radius.
NZ-themed sculptures & wall art.
Maybe a wider range of pole types- materials, lengths, widths & shapes for building aviaries & plaster pieces for building nocturnal houses- Ooo, having a small, medium & large 'glow worm' or 'star scape' wall & ceiling art/light would be amazing.
Basically, they could use a NZ pack as an easy way to introduce more birds without bothering with a flying mechanic or they could do a "Birds of Oceania" pack- replacing Tuatara & NZ fur seal with the Crowned Pigeon, Australian Pelican, Black Swan, Weka & either a Bird of paradise, Budgie or Kakariki as the walkthrough exhibit animal for example.
Or they could add the Secretary bird with a Macaw species as the walk-through exhibit animal & call it the "Birds" pack, that would give the many players that have been asking for birds what they want & add animals to the roster to flesh out Oceania so it isn't basically just all Australia, which a (very) small number of players have been asking for a number of years now lol.
