Newcomer / Intro Newb looking to get involved in the community

Hey folks, I've been playing Elite Dangerous for the extensive timespan of two days (Mostly Penniless for the win), and I'm wondering how to get involved with the general community. Are there corporations, unions or alliances I should be joining, or is it more of an ad-hoc thing with small groups? So far I've only seen one person talking on the chat, and they weren't saying anything of particular value. Perhaps I'm just on the wrong side of the galaxy?

In any case, any help would be appreciated!

Hey CMDR. There are loose groups around but nothing wrong with chatting yourself. Add a few ransoms to your friends list and wing up.
In game there isn't really any community features.
