Newbie: Fuel, Jump Distance Issues

I'm having a hell of a time figuring out jump distance with my starting Sidewinder.

When I first started, I'd dock and find a job that was Deliver XYZ to ABC. Sounds good, so I grab the job, just to find out that ABC is impossible for me to get to, no matter how many jumps I put in between myself and ABC. The BB's "Jump Distance" notation was completely useless in this case. I was apparently only 6.5 LY away from the location but when I checked the Galaxy Map, there was no way I could get to it - no dotted line connections.

I'm also continually struggling with calculating jump distance. I'll check the BB, find a job I want, then head to the Galaxy map, find the locations, figure out that yes, I could probably make it in the 2 hour time frame - then I go back to the BB and the job is gone, after only a couple of minutes. Aggravating!

Also, is the a GPS in the game yet? I need to go 6 jumps to deliver my XYZ item for my mission, but I'm always going back to the galaxy map trying to figure out my next jump. Yes, in time I'll have these memorized in the 55 stars we currently play in, but with the 400 billion systems incoming there's no way I'll be able to remember LHS 1021 to LHS 2911 to LHS 1091 to LHS 1911 to LHS 3911 without constantly going back to my map. Yes, that's "part of the fun/challenge", but for a complicated space ship I can imagine seeing a line somewhere saying "Your next jump needs to be this to reach ABC".

Finally, I find that paying the premium for a Distress Signal isn't very realistic but it sure saves time. The ~650cr fee for a fillup without having to spend 10+ minutes docking just for gas at a local station seems well worth it to me. Anyone else notice this?

There is talk of multiple waypoint route mapping being implemented.
For the moment, jumping in and out of the Universe map will have to do.
Bit clunky but it'll get you there.

You make some fair points. When I was in my early trading-for-cash stage I created a rough hand-drawn map of the core systems and main trade routes. It seems playing in 3300 doesn't remove the need for pen and paper!

The trade-off between weight and jump range seems too harsh, in my opinion. I once jumped to H Draconis to get some weapons for my Cobra, only to find after I had bought them that the extra weight stranded me in a small group of systems! The BB blocks missions which are irrevocably beyond your jump range so why can't it calculate your range with the proposed cargo and prevent acceptance of impossible missions? Failing that there needs to be a short "cancellation without penalty" period to allow time for checking the map.

As noted above there are some useful tools created by other people, the ED community is a pretty helpful bunch, I find. And there's no doubt the mapping tools will be improved. Hang in there.

At the moment if I plan on going to somewhere where I have to jump many times to get there I have to scribble the jump destinations down on paper (I'm old - I forget quickly! lol)

Whilst tis is ok I hope a system is implemented where you can program your Nav computer - seems odd having all this technology and no way of programming journeys!

For the mo I'll carry on using my trusty note book!

Last I checked there's a slider in the map menu that represents cargo amount. You can slide it wherever and it will tell you where you can and can't go.

I have found a similar problem with the jobs and the jump calculation. The BB will say "We want 1 ton delivered to THIS system." At the bottom of the job it says (for example) "Distance: 5.9lY" and then tells me my range is 6.2lY so I can take the job.

Then I go and look at the galactic map and the system is actually 16lY away!

Is it a bug or am I getting mixed up somewhere?

Talking about the slider and the dotted lines in the Galaxy map, does anyone know what the blue and grey plain lines mean?

It happened several times to me that a plain line (grey or blue) joined the system I was in with another (that I could select as destination from the map) but that system didn't appear in the possible destinations in the left side panel.

Refuelling with the emergency beacon is ok in a Sidewinder, but not in anything else. For a start, if you keep doing it you're supposed to get a wanted status, and it's also more expensive in bigger ships. It cost me something like 1,500 in a Hauler, plus 600 to clear my wanted status, and on top of that the refuel seemed to be bugged and only gave me the jump range of a sidewinder - so I actually had to back track to a world I could reach and refuel properly.

The distance slider on the map is great if you just want to get from one star to another, but it doesn't show actual distance on a single tank of fuel, just the distance between each star, so it can be quite deceiving if you're plotting a journey with many stops.

What would be helpful would be to see how far you can jump without refuelling, and also for it to be more obvious without having to click into a system to see whether or not you can refuel there, though I guess that gets a little moot when we finally get a fuel scoop.

It says what it means above the slider... Blue = Max cargo, Grey = Cargo as per the slider (which could be zero or max or anywhere in between)

The nav panel only shows X number of destinations, and also has a bit of a bug where it doesn't show some you can jump to. FD are aware :)

Makes no odds though as it doesn't take in to account weapons etc... it needs some touch ups to work correctly and be clearer as to what mass your ship has at any one time.

Yeah, but these are the dotted lines, aren't they? It's the plain lines that confuse me. Or more exactly the difference between the plain lines and the dotted ones.

Ahhhh! That's good to know! Thank you! :)

Actually it does take that into account, but doesn't update realtime on every change you make to your ships mass (some components, like loadout, fuel mass don't reflect in the maps range calculations until you switch instances) According to the notes on the ticket I filed after investigating this, the fix will roll with the next update.
