Newbie here - Help with the radar

Probably be answered elsewhere, but I couldn't easily find anything...

Does anyone have a guide as to how the radar works?

Got into the combat missions yesterday and couldn't for the life of me figure it out.

I'm guessing the circle is where objects are relative to you on the x and y plane.

The lines I'm guessing are on the top for above you and below for below you.

I would have something right on top of me in the circle, but either what I assume to be above me or below me, spinning my ship round with me not moving I couldn't see what I was looking for, in fact the blip on the radar would move away from me...

Appart from that it looks great, especially on 3 monitors :)

a brief explanation.
the centre is you.
the top is always your front.
line up on the blip means the blib is below you.
and down its above.
that's all basicly

Ah so I 'd had it the wrong way round, which would explain why I couldn't find what I was after! Many thanks, much appreciated!

It's been almost 30 years since I played the original!

Some other things that are good to know:

Hollow blips are players, solid ones are NPCs.
Square blips have their weapons stowed, triangular ones have their weapons deployed.

... and red blips are hostile!

In a combat zone if you haven't chosen a side every blip should be yellow, but as soon as you chose a side some of the blips will turn green (friends) and some will be red (enemies). Hollow triangular red blips mean hostile players - best to assume that they are the most dangerous enemy you face, and either kill them first or avoid them completely!

Edit: ... and if you want to tell who is shooting at you, their triangle will flash on the screen as you are hit.

The Scanner Symbology graphic explains this stuff particularly nicely :)

Aside: the thread is a bit mistitled - radar technology is obsolete in the year 3300, it's just called the "scanner". The graphic has been corrected but we didn't bother asking a mod to change the title.

I've had it wrong as well it seems. Was thinking it was same way as OP.

The scanner is as it was in the very first Elite game back in the 80's, and I personally have not come acrross a better scanner yet.

It combines the information of wether the target is infront or behind or to the sides of you, with information as to wether the target is above or below you.

First, everything is presented in relation to the plane of your ship.

Your ship is the solid triangle in the center, and your field of view is marked as a triangle extending forward from that. First thing is to get your target in that triangle.

Next, the height information is provided by the 'stalk'. When this stalk is long, the target is either way above or way below you, and you need to pitch appropriately. You want to aim to get that stalk as short as possible. No stalk means they are directly on the plain of your ship, and if they are also in the field of view triangle, you should be able to see them.

Remember also, for maneuvering, Elite favours roll and pitch for tight turns. A flat yaw is really slow.

.

yep I agree.
the only flaw I see in it that it jumps back to zero after every jump.
beside from , I find the field to small.
I hope there will be a long range scanner later on in the game.
