newbie in need of combat advice

Simply put, i am running around with my eagle, not being able to kill any npc because i find them too difficult. I have not been able to complete a single bounty mission. When i find the npc i need to dispatch, they are either guarded or in a ship too difficult to destroy.

Am i doing something terribly wrong or are bounty missions overturned for newbies?

Maybe don't bother with missions, just hang around Nav beacon taking on Sidewinders and Eagles till you get more used to combat, you'll still earn bounties for that. Practice pays off :)

no, it's just hard in a beginner's Eagle

Try fitting gimballed or turreted weapons as well as having fixed weapons to give you experience of how to use the (better) fixed weapons...

Maybe you are not ready for missions yet. Why not head to the Nav beacon and wait for wanted NPCs and kill them. Most of them will be much easier. Work on your skills there and you will ready to move on in no time

edit: ninja'd dammit.

Assassination missions are not suitable for new players. The target will almost always be on a top ship and with escorts.

You will be far better off hunting pirates at nav beacons or resource extraction sites, even at supercruise.

There are also some BB missions offering reward to kill X number of pirates, those are easier than assassinations because the targets will mostly be isolated.

Happy hunting!

I'm in a Python, and I don't even try assassination missions :)
Group up and go out to an RES site with a kill warrant scanner.
Scan any wanted ships then kill them, use that money to buy a Viper, then a Vulture.
They are awesome ships and very new user friendly.

Come over to Mobius private group ( PVE no player killing server ) jump in Team speak, one of us will help you raise some money for a better ship.
Dont get me wrong, Eagles are great fun, but unless you are a flight assist off ace, they really can't handle much direct Fire and now with the new AI Viper would be the smallest ship I would try this in.

The Vuture is an absolute brute of a combat ship, sexy, fast, big guns, big shields and very affordable.
Fit some gimballed ( auto targeting ) pulse lasers.
Target a wanted enemy, kill warrant scan complete, press Y key until subsystem power core is targeted, start shooting.

All good advice above. I would add, that as you upgrade your ship to A rated modules things do tend to feel a bit easier. Your ship gets tougher, hits harder etc. Can't say that I have had much experience in an Eagle, but they are one of the easier ships to kill. A Viper on the other hand can be much more evasive & hits hard for its size.

Don't rush to the Vulture too soon though, have 4 or 5 millions extra to upgrade it as you will have severe power issues with a stock Vulture.

After upgrading it to at least B grade power supply and A power distribution and of course a couple of large pulses (avoid beams as you will run out of power quicly) the Vulture is worth every credit.

But until then, you will have a lot of fun bounty-hunting in the Viper or with a more allround Cobra.

I see your Cobra sir and raise you a Vulture.
Sounds like the OP is combat driven like myself.
Stay away from Cobras, they are the Oldsmobile of Elite :)
Vulture is the Nissan Godzilla.

just returned from a little bit of nav beacon action and i've never been happier.

Returned with a 20k bounty reward and bout to cash in to the nearest station.

I see what you guys are saying about he various ships but i am standing here with 80k, not 5 mil. In time ill get a better ship.

Still a lot to learn...

That's great. The eagle is a great ship to learn with. My advice is use some (maybe not all) fixed laser weapons. It will make you better in the long run. If you ever want to PvP (which is great fun) fixed weapons are a must.

One of the things a newbie has to learn is to pick your challenges. The bulletin board doesn't match the notices to your skill - it puts everything up there (as you would expect from a bulletin board!). Even today I still do that - I'm very careful about the assassination missions I accept and sometimes I abandon them when it is just too hard. My Vulture and I and pretty tough but I'm not good enough to take on a wing of 'conda's or FDL's! I know others are but I'm not there yet! I loved the eagle - it is a great ship and upgrading it as you go will make it even better. Also, I would say don't be in too much of a rush to move up to other ships - each ship has its own character and strengths and weaknesses so learn how to fly each one to its best advantage - that's what ED is all about - not earning big money as quickly as you can to get into the biggest ship! It's about being the best pilot you can be in the ship you have right now.

Here's a very different suggested approach. Sell your Eagle and buy a Hauler. Fit it out for trading. Trade until you have your first half-million credits. Then decide either to get a Viper and kit it out for combat, or (my suggestion) continue trading to your first million and buy a Cobra, the first truly multi-purpose ship, and kit that out for combat. And never buy a new ship until you have three times the base cost in your bank balance.

Amen to that! Well said. +rep

Don't forget the Adder, it is a great stepping stone to a cobra and IMHO more capable than the hauler, my my first million in an Adder and still have a soft spot for the ship.

Good post and glad to hear the op got some luck at the nav beacon. I echo the other players who suggest not rushing to the bigger ships. Good luck CMDR, fair winds.

Assassination missions usually involve mid-high end target ships. id go to a low intensity RES and pick on ships your own size to start pooling up credits to get a viper or something. The eagle is maneuverable sure but its also lightly armed and armored

If you're going to try trading to get credits rapidly, i would suggest trying to do a rares route. Something like this: http://imgur.com/gallery/lkRWdtw
You'll easily fill a hauler up before completing all the stops at one "side" of it - but it will get you lots of money, very quickly. (~1 million credits per hour in a cobra is achievable)
Of course, since you are going a long way you will want a fuel scoop so you dont have to keep finding and stopping at stations for fuel.

Alternatively, if you want to get credits via bounties then you could join one of the power play factions which give you a % bonus on bounties collected within their space, such as ALD. It'll accelerate things a little for you - and the lower tier ranks arent difficult to achieve in order to get the benefits.
There are also combat bond zones where you dont have to hunt the ships - they keep spawning in a maelstrom of battle but these can be dangerous.
