Newbie intro to rares...

Ok, and here goes waiting expectantly for helpful replies :)

As an inferquent player, I'm looking at 'rares' I can ID locations using Thrudds, but can anyone help in some BASIC trading tips, where they appeat in Station Services to buy / sell etc.

At least I'm assuming this happens in the 'Service Station' ;)

Ok, unlike regular goods rare ones only appear in small quantities at specific stations (for example you can only have 1 ton of Leathery eggs from Zaonce).
(So trading in a huge ship like a Type 9 is pointless for rares)

Buying: Some useful ways of finding rares:

http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route...16,9,8,87,83&name=Route&type=1&dist=undefined

Selling: them is also different, their price scales with distance (160LY away from the place you bought it is usually the best profit to effort).
Because of this using a ship with a longer jump range such as a Cobra, Type 6 and ASP are good.

Although Watch Out: Since rare goods are rare you get lots more pirates in these systems so it could be interesting.

Edit: The second link shows my Type 6 run from a long time ago. Was a tidy profit but a little repetitive after a few runs round.

they will be a gold color text.
After you buy the first round if you wait around for about ten minutes more will spawn. You won't get any more after that they are capped at a specific amount.
take them up to 160ly in another location to sell them for maximum profit. Preferably another rare station.

Rares appear in Commodities. Simple. They're highlighted in a yellow-y colour, and their stocks are really limited. Currently there's a LOT of Diso Ma Corn available at Shifnalport in Diso. Lave Station at Lave, George Lucas in Leesti have some too if you're near "home"

Basically, buy them, and travel as far away as you can, say around 120Ly, and sell them. Their price goes up in a squiggle curve (technical term), so within about 30Ly there's no price increase worth having, between 30 and 100 they go up fast, and from 100-120 they level out. You get a typical maximum profit of 15,000Cr per ton, so a T6 with 80T of rares (about the most you can get in one area) will net you about 1.2MCr.

There are some which are highly illegal (Wolf Fesh) and of dubious legality (Leestian Evil Juice I think?), so be VERY careful when you enter systems en route that you don't have Illegal Cargo flashing up. If you do, avoid scans like the plague!

Value of rares seems to peak at about 160 light years from source.

Oh, if you're doing it a lot, it's worth doing exploration on the way too. You're usually travelling in Economy, so might do 20-odd jumps to travel 120Ly (160Ly seems to be better, sorry!). I don't do rares runs very often. Maybe about 6 or 8 times, and have made about 2 million in exploration data altogether as a side activity. Just start off by manually jumping "up" "down" "left" or "right" a bit, and then set a target system in the same direction at the other end. I was really surprised to see the odd "First Discovered by" with my name on within 100Ly of Lave! There are thousands of stars and tens of thousands of planets, so have a scout around on your travels. Rares trading isn't as grindy as regular 3 system trading, so slowing it down a bit makes it more interesting.

I can't find the link right now (in Linux recovery for my sins), but there are a cluster of systems near Lave and another near 39 Tauri. Ignore Geras (long Supercruise) but pick up at Witchhaul. You're a bit closer than is totally effective, but it's worth it for 11,000Cr per ton profit!

The respawn rate is a little variable. Occasionally you hit lucky and get the entire allocation first time (that's happening in Diso atm, probably because it has been manually reset after the CG). Usually you wait one 10 minute period and collect the second batch and that's it. Sometimes you don't get the full amount the second time and have to wait another ten minutes, which can be very annoying!

Things to do while waiting?
  • Pop out to a RES or nav beacon for a little bounty hunting
  • Try and chat with any fellow commanders in the area. There are usually some around rare supply points
  • Sit on the pad, activate the camera and lift it up then pan around and watch all the stupid tricks NPCs get up to in stations!
