Newbie: Mining or Trading to get off the grond?

I've been watching lots of videos on mining and trading trying to figure out the best way to make money and get the hell out of the Sidewinder. How about some testimony for starting this monolithic game? What's a better use of time to gather funds.

I plan on from here going Cobra to Asp eventually for a some bounty hunting and smuggling, but I truly am overwhelmed on how to start this game on a good foot.

Just a kill warrant scanner and FSD interdictor. Scan your bounties before you kill them. The interdictor pulls targets out of supercruise.

Trading is your best bet, do the illegal ones too! got my cobra within an hour of doing those. After that I'd say smuggling for the win :D

Smuggling slaves, drugs etc. Got me an eagle within minutes to get more capacity, then built up to a cobra still smuggling. Now I have an Asp and nearly maxed out a vulture for some bounty hunting. Mostly paid for with slaves.

Check out the bulletin board for missions, you can get a load more for them which will get to to a bigger ship and better missions, than coming up all the way from the start in trading.

Look for things like <insert commodity name> needed in.... They will likely ask you to take that commodity to a specific system. If you have any cargo space left (they give you the cargo for the missio), you now know what commodity to take with you from where you're at.

Don't take the ones where you have to go find the commodity, unless of course you know exactly where you can get it cheaply!

Take all the courier missions you can get.

Go to each station in the system and see what they have, you sometimes will get more than one mission to a single system.

As you do more missions for a faction you will be offered higher value ones, in both terms of rep and CR. If you're interested in gaining rep, try never to fail a timed mission as the rep hit is quite hard.

So smuggling is mission based, thanks! I did master drifting with low signature through docks as not to get scanned.

Locate a system with at least one civil war, search for a high intensity conflict zone, choose side (in functions), shoot only small and already damaged ships, never attack a big ship. Go to a station of your side and claim the bounties.
With this system you don't need an interdictor or wait for new preys, also you gain combat skill. Always have enough money to recover your ship in case of destruction.

Great! Smaller ships are less scanned than larger ones. Silent running and turning most modules does the trick. My 2nd ship after the Sidewinder was the Adder. Its a great little ship. It's can fight (burst/beam and cannon) and carry stuff. I made my k's in this one to get me a Cobra.

.
Not necessarily. You can smuggle illegal goods as well. But with a beginners ship, the missions give you more cash.

My advise. Being a elite beta backer

Enjoy this game for what it is. Exploration SIM.

Take your time. LEARN. As all of us backers did. Do a little of everything. Explore the different options. A little T and E will make your experience more satisfying. You don't have to be a criminal to make tons of money. I don't do illegal acts. Won't ever. And I have a kitted type 9 kitted python and kitted ASP. I make 6-7 mil an hour. Learned this on my own. My builds my trade routes.

This game is not a race. There is no finish line. Just enjoy it. This is not destiny. It has no end. Which is perfect

Thanks for the tips, I am certainly not new to Space Sims having loved Freelancer (Space Sim-ish), Escape Velocity Nova, but I never played the old Elite from '84. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do...mining I think is off the table for now, but exploration and bounty hunting sound baller. Now for a ship...torn on pimping an Adder, a Viper, or a Cobra.

Thanks again everyone!

I started with Adder in your list and then ASP though I've used both eagle and cobra i am among the few that do not like either. ASP is my pirate/bounty hunting go to. Though its a good trader and the best explorer

Oh yeah, I have my eye on the Asp...but before I have the millions for that...I like the idea of the adder for trading or maybe mining, but man I hate the rightside flight seat.
