My ship was nearly destroyed by some ace NPC pilot, but I was just able to escape. I have earned about 2,000 credits so far with a delivery, but the repairs on my ship will cost almost my entire bank. Is it worthwhile to just suicide and respawn (presumably with a new ship?) or should I suck it up and pay for the repairs? Do I need to buy insurance somehow before I do the respawn or will I be granted my same newbie sidewinder that I was given when I started the game?

Newcomer / Intro Newbie question: suicide or repair my ship

Insurance is automatic when you get the ship. The rebuy cost that you'll pay for replacing your current ship exactly is listed in the systems panel on the right side of the cockpit. If you're in the stock Sidewinder, you should be able to just respawn with the original setup for free.

I ended up running some trades at ~15% health until I made some $$. It ends up that one of the stations I docked at would do the repair work for 1/2 the price so I went for it. I ended up crashing into a wall and lost the ship anyhow, but indeed I got it all back for free! Except for the cargo, of course...

The systems panel (on the right-hand side of the cockpit) has a self-destruct option in the rightmost tab, all the way at the bottom of the list.
