Elite / Frontier Newbie Questions (Missions In Frontier Elite II + The Edge Of The Universe)

Hello,

I'm a newbie. I've played Elite Plus a lot in the past, but I had never played Frontier Elite II until recently (part was that at the times it felt too "serious" for me). I have questions about Elite II. Some might sound obvious and stupid to many of you, but I tried to read all the FAQs I could find, and there was no answers:

1) What is the edge of the universe? I know that it goes over, for example,
0,1050, because I browsed until there (I wanted to confirm myself that it ended at 999 on any side).

2) What is there to do about people who ask info about other people?? I never find them. Am I supposed to accept requests for people who ask about lost ones (aka "I will look for them"), or supposed to already have the answer when I meet them (because I took notes of anyone I am talking to, for example)?

3) Only a mad connoissor would know this: is there a list of all the exact different missions in Elite II?

Let me explain. Somewhere I read an advertisement saying that there was over 80 missions in Elite II (I forgot the number, it might had been lower, but at least above 20). I thought this made no sense, as they were only about 4 missions (or 6, if you consider how you get medals). But then I considered they probably meant each different mission, exactly.

For example, you can deliver:

superconducting wire
requisition forms
paperwork
some documents
a message
blank military data cards
some medals
some messages

(notice the difference "a message" and "some messages".....)

Is there a list of all the different terms?

The reason I ask is, because Elite II is rather repetitive,
it might be interesting or challenging to try and accomplish
all of the "different" types of delivery, photographs, etc...

I guess all this info would be in the source code, anyways.

Thanks,

Tribble

excerpt of my enhanced frontier object specs

sol: X 0x171880, Y 0x1524A0

internally sector 0x000000,0x000000 is at x -591200, y -541200 (last two cyphers are sector intern)
in fact there is a maximum of 0xFFFF(+0x1 because 0x0 is a value) (dec.65536) sectors, and I don’t know why sector 0x000000,0x000000 is at -5912, -5412, because the map starts at sector -32768 and ends at sector 32767.
(in this system each sector starts at lower left corner, the whole map will also start at lower left corner).

above/below you will start at the topmost or lowest in the same map (it's endless, like it would be projected at a sphere).
thus for both vectors x and y

to your information the galactical center is not at sector -5912, -5412

to move quickly on the galactical map use LSHIFT and cursor keys (in case you don't know)

2)
me neither
and i got bored after some time writing down all the names and systems of people i met in FE2

3)
hm, besides of these small differences in how they appear i would say
for FE2;

delivery missions (some need permissions, get them all with a "taxi" job)
assasination missions (do you know where the word assasin is from? :D)
reconnaisance missions (photo) hint; to get all medals, first photo must be a low classified one
bombing missions

to get as many as possible, choose the headquarters as your base that is for
federal, eta cassiopeia
imperial, facece

if able to use the wormhole bug and you possibly obtain access check this:
FRONTIER_WORMHOLE_DATABASE
if you haven't access there is still a quite large number of passages available here:
frontierverse/wormhole_routes
overall a very good site for all needs in FE2 and as i recognized now, completely redisigned.

4)
potsmokes little collection of beginners missions (prepared savegames)
sorry but if you are a n00be, try them, it's fun to.
tasks are various and goes
from a simple get home from a far off point (needs original release or a "wormhole patch"),
over try to pick up some ore from mb4's,
to bust a base.

the whole thing can be obtained here:
FE2 utilities collection
get some additional info to it here:
SSC FE2 thread

i hope you like it and wish you good chance

if you use an HEX editor(i tried on the amiga version - long live the amiga), you will see that there are some infinished missions, like escorts in formations or different military missions..and yes, there is a thargoid as well :p

Hello,

thanks for these replies.

About missions, I knew about categories.
I was looking for specifics, as if someone
"collected" them (tried to do one of each
specific, even though it isn't required).

I am not yet to the assasination level,
because it's too boring to have to do
so many deliveries. I'm tempted in editing,
but I don't understand how sge.exe works
(I mean, once I'm in the Hexed part, I
have no idea what to do).

I'd love to see a save at Admiral
or a little before Admiral. I could
only find them for Prince (PC version).

The delivery missions I found so far
seems to be these (and I think it's
a complete profile):

Beginners (None, Private):

deliver requisition forms to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver paperwork to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver some documents to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver a message to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver blank military data cards to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver some medals to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver some messages to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver some superconducting wire to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

Corporal:

deliver cryptographic code cards to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver gravitic detonators to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver military grade components to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver weapons grade explosive capsules to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

Sergeant (Secret Deliveries):

deliver secret orders to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver secret plans to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver secret dossiers to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

deliver high command communications to the -- system by -- on --.
You will be paid --.

What the heck am I trying to do?
I'm trying to enumerate the "82 missions"
mentioned in the back of the original box.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/frontier-elite-ii/cover-art/gameCoverId,161833/

When I played I wondered for a while
where were those missions, but now
I know this is what they meant.
I think they probably mean more
like 40 missions, but you can choose
to do them Federation or Imperial.

Basically, through boring myself
doing endless deliveries, I thought
I should try to do at least "1 of each".

Someone with access to the source
code (which I don't) could probably
enumerate or copy/paste these
"terms alterations" (aka "different
missions") in a flash, hence why
I asked here.

Thanks!

If it's assassination missions you are interested in, you could always do the shady ones in the wanted ads. All that's required is a decent Elite rating. To get that just do some trading runs to the dangerous systems and if you really want a challenge do your hit before the mark hyperspaces away, just as they are taking off. Then you will have the police to deal with too! :D

Also I am not surprised you couldn't find an Admiral save game, it's harder to win promotion for the feds. Working for the empire is easier as there seems to be no end of missions on Topaz.

Hmm, it's not that I want to do assassination missions more than I want to climb up the military ranks. I realized that it is the real challenge in Frontier, especially because it requires lots of missions to just climb up one rank (while they are tricks to climb the Rlite rating faster).

But the questions about missions was much about curiosity. I have just played with a save as Prince and found much of the info I was looking for.

I want to start a specific thread about these 82 Missions, because I think this is info that should be on Frontierverse and is not.

Cheers,
