Newcomer / Intro Newbie - Run out of fuel - Eject

I am new to the game, been playing for about a week in Solo, until I find my feet.

So...I have run out fuel. My friend Google tells me there is an Eject function on the Right Hand Panel, under Functions Tab. Except that it isn't there. I am playing in Solo, so I can't call out the RAC (aka Fuel Pirates?).

I couldn't find any alternative except to start a new game...which is not a big deal after only playing for a short time, but would be hella harsh if it happened after playing a few months.

I feel like I am missing something very obvious, but I have spent the last hour on Google and I admit defeat.

Help? Pretty please?

Whether you play in Solo or Open (or private group) is a choice you make each time you start the game (unless you haven't left the starter system, I believe), so the Fuel Rats may still be an option - always worth dropping them a line (follow the link and click "Get Help") as they have much more experience with this sort of thing.

EDIT: Alternatively, there is a "Self Destruct" option in the "Functions" tab of the right-hand cockpit panel, which will blow up your ship - you will then be given an option to either rebuy your existing ship if you have the insurance excess (rebuy cost) to cover it, or respawn in a new Sidewinder at your starting dock if you don't. Either option is still better than doing a clean save.

Oh hang on...eventually something appeared under the functions tab...eject or reboot or repair

Weird way to do it :/

Thanks drakhyr.

So...having played around in Solo, I can take my experience and assets into Open, and vice versa?

Absolutely. It's the same save, as I say you just choose each time you start the game whether you are going to play (for that session) in Solo, Open or a private group.

I'd definitely agree with Drakhyr that even if you don't want to arrange to meet a Fuel Rat in a Private Group, that self destructing would be the better option. I'd also offer a couple of tips you might not know:

Open the functions tab again and on the left hand side look at you Jump Range (first of the numbers for current). Open the Galaxy Map and select a system that is just within you jump range. Back in the cockpit, look at the amount of fuel that jump will use (the blue coloured part of the fuel gauge). You can use this to know when jumping manually, that when you have that much fuel left you need to make your next system one you can refuel in.

When you plot a route on the Galaxy Map, if the orange line becomes a dotted line then that means you do not currently have enough fuel to make the following jumps. Use this to know when you need to refuel along the journey (double check there's a station in that system first, and if you can see the system map then make sure it's not thousands of Light Seconds away).

(aka Fuel Pirates?)

*chuckles*

Thanks Ozric...yes, I was aware of the dotted line, but I jumped in thinking I could find a station to refuel at...or rather I wasn't thinking.

Still getting to grips with the Galaxy map...need to work out how to know if a system has fuel, System Map, I am guessing. Already figured a fuel scoop would be sensible. I was actually trying to get to system to fit one (high tech systems for outfitting?).

Steep learning curve

You can get a fuel scoop at most outfitting, even a 1E will save your life. High tech tend to have the best range of equipment but it's not a given.

Another thing to check, do you have horizons and have collected (or can collect on a planet) some Carbon, Vanadium & Germanium? If so you can use it to increase your jump range for a one off jump. It also will allow you to do the same jump for less fuel, so it may just be possible for you to save yourself.

K.G.B.F.A.O.M ---> always remember that. helped me a lot when looking for stars to get fuel from. Those are the star classes where you can refuel when you have a fuel scoop equipped.

Fuel rats are legit, epic SOBs. They will get to you in record time and treat it like a Military Op.

I was once farming HGEs for hours, and hadn't realise how low I'd run. Semi afk for a moment.. I hear the noise of being pulled out from SC, see myself spinning around as modules shut down and I thought I was being insta killed. No, just another fool out of fuel :)

I thought the fuel rats would take an age to get to me. 15/20 minutes later I was on my way.

Bless the FR ;)

I see it is THAT time again.

It has been a few weeks since the Fuel Rat Corporation has not been advertised.

It is always the same, it starts with an apparently naive pilot, claiming to have run out of fuel. Then another, supposedly unconnected pilot pops up and has a great idea. 'What about the Fuel Rats?'

Meh!

Steep is semi-accurate... long and winding up a never ending sisyphean hill? Anyways 10months later and I still always see have Inara at hand on a tablet next to me, with eddb and everything else open on extra tabs - the best cockpit computer available that will help you find everything with relative ease.

Yeah it is, but it's worth it. As I suggested above always check the System Map if you need to refuel. If the system map is unavailable, then check the population, if it has some then you should be able to refuel.

I'd seen the title of this thread pop up and opened the thread to tell the OP about the fuel rats, I've never used them myself but I know they are genuine in game heroes.

Or you could just add an extra fuel tank.

Waits for long discussion of merits of mass, jump distance etc etc ........

Apparently? On Eve, fuel was never an issue. But, yeah, I am a newbie to the game. Took me a little while to sort out the hardware...mouse and keyboard isn't comfortable. ;)
