Newcomer / Intro Newbie seeking newbies (but experience is welcome)

Greetings, commanders!

A new pilot here, just put my first boots into the wide galaxy two days ago, and I already notice Elite is quite the game to get in to! I am having oodles of fun thus far, but the initial hurdles are nothing to sneeze at and I feel a little bit out of my depth.

I would like to try all the activities in this game, but I get the feeling that some of the missions, especially the combat ones, might be a bit out of my league. Only one way to find out though, right?

To make this path of discovery a bit safer, I am wondering if there are other new (or not so new) pilots out there willing to team up for a bit of group play and test the starry waters together.

We can swap experiences and cover each other's backs when we are both online.

Of course, more experienced players are welcome too, but I am sure I would slow you down. And, I believe I am currently still in the "newbie area" (does that exist? How do I know when I left it?).

I currently dont have access to my character list, but later tonight I will update the thread with my in game name. In the meantime, if anyone is up for a spot of adventuring, feel free to leave a message and I'l get back to you soon as I can!

I hope to see you in space.

The starter zone is obnoxiously marked by large unmissable symbols in the galaxy map.

You can check out the various player groups to see if any are doing anything you want to try and if they operate in your timezone.

Greetings, commanders!
Greetings welcome to the game and forums.

They have made the start of the game friendlier over the years but it still feels like your first swimming lesson in freezing water wearing a nice long wool coat that has its pockets filled with lead.

I would like to try all the activities in this game, but I get the feeling that some of the missions, especially the combat ones, might be a bit out of my league. Only one way to find out though, right?
The tricks with missions is to read everything in the description especially the distances and the ranking and not to take ones that are too much above your rank or that will take longer than you are comfortable with.

To make this path of discovery a bit safer, I am wondering if there are other new (or not so new) pilots out there willing to team up for a bit of group play and test the starry waters together.

Experienced commanders cannot enter the starter region and you won’t be allowed back in if you dock outside it after having achieved any rank increase.

I currently dont have access to my character list, but later tonight I will update the thread with my in game name. In the meantime, if anyone is up for a spot of adventuring, feel free to leave a message and I'l get back to you soon as I can!

Have fun and fly safe.

Thank you for the feedback!
Indeed, it can feel like a dip in an ice bath, hence the thought to grab a couple of other new pilots and just explore stuff together.

I am uncertain if I can chat to an entire system or open a group for this purpose in game yet, but I will look into this when next I get behind my desk.

First off - yes you can use system chat - beware though it can get "messy" ;) - local chat (i.e. just those in your instance) is much cleaner / calmer.

At the top of this sub-forum is a big orange banner telling you about the Galactic Academy - using that discord system you can find people to help you ingame. Many experienced commanders maintain a separate alternate account to keep the ability to operate in the noob-zone just to help out.

Remember, you can find people in-game (using the comms panel) either to crew with them (or them with you), to act as mentors - you can also wing-up (they call them teams now?) with anyone and when in a wing you can have pretty good voice-comms (you can have voice comms with friends etc too).

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

There's also the Groups, Squadrons and Factions forum where player groups are recruiting new members and the in-game squadron search feature (right cockpit panel, first tab).

Maybe you've already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Hello, if you want add me. I am still a noob, started 2 weeks ago but piled up some 150hrs (it's holiday and I am grounded due to Corona restrictions), so I already understood some basics I think. Owning some multicrew ships (Type9, Python, Krait) and doing some quite paying hauling / mining tours I always need a wingman / crewmember. Currently I am hunting guardian artifacts for the FSD boost. Not so much into pirate hunting / exploring / sightseeing yet. In game name "void68" if you like... currently not on Discord, cause there was no need yet.

About me, german, 53 y/o, flying sims since C64, original Elite player, but lost almost all memory, VR MSFS, DCS and now... Elite / Frontiers for 6,99€ :D. Reactions aren't as good anymore and I don't like to compare excel sheets like in EVE (but of course know the approbiate tools). I don't care where I get the most credits, hate farming / grinding and don't want to be on the top. I want to enjoy the game and live for the immersion! Having an eye on the income, though.

edit: my home system after being violently kicked out of the kindergarden currently is Nanazhobo.

I will add you when I get home!
Personally I am looking to try some combat missions and pilot hunting with a wingman, mainly just to learn and get experience, but I'd be happy to wingman with you on other activities as well.

Nice, I have to sharpen my combat abilities, but I am a noob on the helm of a cruiser... well, my Cobra will be better suited for that task. I do no PvP however.

Welcome, commander.
The "initial hurdles", as you will find out, are just the tip of the iceberg. Elite will find ways to surprise you after years as it did the first day you've played.

But it's a fun iceberg to dig into. Let's call it a Party Iceberg. DJs and shiny disco balls included. :)
