Newcomer / Intro Newbie signing in Saying hello and just looking for some advice

Hello CMDR Crosby,

you might consider this: the Cobra is the fastest ship in the game and with a bit of thruster-upgrade it can outrun every other ship easily. No need to fear any trigger-happy maniacs in open play then. Just put maximum power to the engines, the rest to shields and hit the afterburner and imagine the other guy chewing on his joystick. I always find it kind of funny when they signal 'Stop!' and i just reply: 'Why?' :)

There is no need to avoid open play when you are already sitting in a Cobra. Flying a Hauler, before i could afford one felt to me like i had a sign on my forehead saying 'Victim' in fat capital letters. Been butchered once so quickly in that lame underpowered delivery van that it was changed into a fireball before i was able to even say something with four letters. Now in retrospective i think it wasn't a nice experience, still i don't want to miss it.

So welcome commander and have a good journey.

Yeah I kind of knew that that's why I wait till I got a Cobra as least I knew I could outrun trouble, and thanks for the Hello.

Oh, then obviously i misred, i thought you already had one. Got mine by trading rare commodities. Didn't take to long, you should be able to afford one in reasonable time even with limited gaming time.

Bounty hunting in a RES sounds interesting.
How does one go about getting into it ?

Don't know I have only bounty hunted a few select ship while in SC, you know check factions see who I'll support who I won't then scan see their wanted status and affiliation and decide from there Never been to a RES hell I don't even know all the abbreviations for all the different areas yet RES, USS, etc. Is the a thread explaining all these abbr?

Never easy when given such an open choice of what to do. A little trading, combat in either Resource Extraction Sites (found in extraction systems, among others) Navigation Beacons (every system, at every star) or Combat Zones (where local factions are battling it out - just remember to 'pick' a faction once there by going to right hand panel and Functions tab, top option). Play as a pirate, going for NPCs or players. Grab a fuel scoop, and go off exploring.

At the start, with the stock Cobra, as long as you have enough credits for your insurance, go out and have fun, don't worry about how much credits you have or worry about what ship to get next. Find out what you enjoy doing, don't be afraid to change your mind later on, or indeed go back to something. I've been a trader, explorer and bounty hunter. According to the Stats I've also been a Smuggler too, but your guess is as good as mine when that happened.
*Added emphasis

The others you mention:

USS - Unknown Signal Source ; SSS - Strong Signal Source; WSS - Weak Signal Source etc.
CG - Community Goals

There's a thread going around somewhere, with most of if not all abbreviations. If I can find and if I remember I'll link it.. :D

I hunted criminals at the nav beacons until i could afford a better ship. Once I got into a Viper, I switched to hunting RES sites until I could afford to buy the next ship I wanted to check out, for me that was the adder, which I kitted out to try exploring a bit. then to a type 6 for a little trading. I then bought a vulture and seriously hit the RES sites until I am where I am now... in a type 7 trading so I can buy that next shiny ship for whatever activity that I decide to pursue next!

If one got a stock Cobra,
What minimum upgrade is needed to reliably outrun jackers ?

What immediate upgrades would be in order
for a mix of trading and bounty hunting ?

Hey Carl since the Cobra is the fastest ship out there to give you a added boost for safety the three things I would upgrade are
1. Power Distribution will give you more boost more often
2. Shields will allow you to get shot while escaping
3. Power Plant (this one is actually tied to the two above you might need it sooner if your already to close to not having enough power for those new shields.)

RES sites our located in systems with high metal rich asteroids and just like NAV beacons will show up on the NAV panel as selectable destinations.
the thing to do is know which factions in that system you will or will not support, the go to the RES site and just follow the local police around and see who they start shooting at. Scan their targets for faction owner we know their already WANTED or the police wouldn't be shooting at them once you verified it belongs to a factions you don't mind eliminating start shooting. Now of course if siding with factions don't matter just lock on and start firing even before the scan completes just make sure the target is actually being fired at by the police easy to get mixed up in factions disputes end up shooting a clean ships.
ALSO WARNING keep a eye on your trigger finger very easy to hit police vessels in the mayhem of a RES site.

A stock cobra without any upgrades will outrun 99% of AI ships you encounter, and most cmdrs as well.
