Newcomer / Intro Newcome to the PC Universe: Add-ons?

I've been on XBox for a little over two years now and am very familiar with the game. I just picked up the game for PC (as an alt for the Gnosis - XBox toon is in Colonia and doesn't want to leave) and am running on a mediocre laptop. I know there are 3rd party dealies out there, what would you recommend? I would like to change the HUD colors (finally!) and have heard it's a simple matter of altering the text of a game file? But I also hear there's an app for it? Also, how do I get my PC to talk to EDSM and whatnot? What is a "must have" for the PC experience, keeping in mind my potato-top PC.

Thanks, all!

Dr. Kaii's ED Profiler is an awesome tool if you want to tweak the graphics.

And EDDiscovery as a general "Where I've been and where to go" tool

Also you can cosider buying the Voice Attack for operating your ship via voice commands to feel extra awesome.

EDDiscovery is the boss. But if you really are potato limited, you might have to just use EDMC instead.
Link it (either) up to your EDSM (for exploration) and Inara (for engineering and other stuff) Accounts

With EDDiscovery, will it only start working from "now" as it were, or, if I ran it now, would stuff I've already done/palaces I've been be picked up as well?

Without a doubt EDDiscovery is the best app you can load on your PC - it has capabilities that I have never even attempted to use. If you create an account at EDSM then you get a API key from there, add it in EDDiscovery settings for your commander and EDDicscovery updates your EDSM account automatically for you. (I turn off the "badges" emails from EDSM.)

I don't use the profiler, I don't like it, I just have my HUD changed in the graphics configuration override file.

I recommend against EDMC now that EDDiscovery does the market data update to the net - EDMC requires your ED login details (and verification) and I don't like that.

Everything since you installed Ed on that machine.

Well, since E D created journal files that is - netlogs from before that have to be added separately I believe.

The install of the game or EDDiscovery? I want to find something I did in game a few days ago so not sure if EDDiscovery will pick it up.

I discovered an ELW that should gave my CMDR name against it but I can't remember the system name. I tried selecting visited stars in the galmap but that didn't work very well unfotunately - I was hoping that, if I install EDD now, I could find it.

Since installing the game (as long as that is with the last year or so for the pendant ;))
It will pick it up

Define "mediocre laptop" please!

EDProfiler can be used to alter HUD colours.

It's a Dell Latitude E7440. i7 processor with 8 gigs of RAM and a SSHDD. The graphics card is an Intel HD something or the other, which I think is what is slowing it down. Once it loads, it runs fine in Medium resolution but is a little slide-showy on High.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll check them out!

Hey guys, I've got an idea.

As r0mi tries EDDiscovery and Voice attack and falls in love with PC gaming and Elite in particular, let's place bets on how long will it take before "So, I bought a new PC" thread appears. :D

Heh...it's a definate possibility. But playing from the couch with a HOTAS on a 55" 4k TV is hard to give up. I honestly only made this leap because I bought a new laptop for work and realized that it "could" run the game. I was planning on schelpping back from Colonia to hop on the Gnosis....was 5k en route actually....when the Gamescon info dropped and I foudn out about the Colonia engineers. So that made the decision for me. Buy the game, and hop around the galaxy with the Gnosis for awhile on PC and carry on in Colonia with my main account.

Besides...a new computer to run this would mean an Oculus and a Warthog on top of that...and the wife and girls would have none of that. :D

...unless you get them to Elite as well. ;)
I'm not usually very keen to admit, but it was my better half who got me into Elite. :D

And btw. You can still play on your TV with HOTAS with the laptop. It just needs a little more work and longer cables.

I installed ED Discovery a while back (in order to be able to see my route on its 2D map while drawing letters on the galaxy).

I've barely started exploring its capabilities (seems a bit daunting to be honest).

Is there a good video anywhere which highlights some if its best capabilities?

Hmm. EDDiscovery installer exe crashed my PC quite nicely.

I have never had an issue with it - are you running an awful lot of apps? I keep my running processes in check (a flight sim habit).

I have been using it for years and still have only scratched the surface.

There is a wiki (almost up to date) but I have never looked for any videos as the ones on the wiki are over 2 years old - maybe ask on their discord (spit)? - I don't use that though.

I have done it but it seems to in slower. I ran an HDMI cable to the TV and the frame rate seems to drop. Is that a thing? The bigger the monitor does it require more horsepower to run?

I installed it last night and it synced eight million systems and then didn't do anything. I'll have to dig into it.
