Newcomer / Intro Newcomer needs some advice

Guide to Outfitting:

You will want to consider how the insurance works as well. The bigger and badder your ship, the more your insurance will cost.

I wanted to add that as long as you have it selected as your destination you won't lose it by flying past accidentally. Just continue slowing and circle around to line it back up. - And I didn't realize this had moved onto a second page, posted needlessly.

I want to supply a counter to the suggestion of pulling the throttle all the way to zero. This is a bad idea because
1.) You aren't stopped, you'll move at 30km, so don't think you aren't getting closer at all.
2.) You make yourself a stationary target for interdiction
3.) Some stars are large enough that you will begin overheating the moment you jump in regardless of your throttle. In this case you'll need to get away promptly so keeping your speed up will make that easier.

If you get yourself primed to turn away from the sun as soon as you're back into super-cruise from frame shift you'll be able to turn away and accelerate much sooner, making you less likely to get interdicted by the star campers or burned by the sun itself.

Remember that even if you get a heat warning you aren't taking damage yet. The warning comes at 100%, damage at 150%, and destruction (assuming you live long enough to get there) at 200%, so just keep an eye on your levels and react accordingly.

Is there an guide to outfitting anywhere?
Because I do not really get it ...

1.) Why are some parts listed, but not buyable, although I have enough money to buy them?
Some parts are linked so you might need a better class of Power generator to get that Better class of FSD for example.

2.) Does it even make sense to upgrade my starter ship or would it be better to save the money for a new ship?
It depends what you want to do with it. 'Winders make great pirating ships, and properly upgraded are good in a fight.

3.) Can I transfer parts from an old ship into a new one?
I have seen that parts sold stay on the station until you undock. So technically it's possible. You sell it before you buy the new ship. Of course, selling the part means your ship is worth less in part exchange.

4.) I do not get the slot management at all ... for example I d like to buy a refinery but it only seems to fit into my cargo bay slot. Does that mean I will loose cargo capacity or even the whole cargo bay if I install a refinery. Speaking of Cargo I would like to buy more cargo space but do not know how .. or is 4 the max for the Sidewinder?
Each slot has a class and that restricts what you can put in there. Yes, it does mean you lose the cargo bay. I fell for that one, as no matter how you fill up your refinery, if you have no hold space, it's a waste of time.

5.) I do not even really understand why all parts are loaned and what are the ups and downs of loaned and owned parts.
Loaned parts come with a free 'Winder. They cost nothing and there is no part-ex value, also no insurance to pay on them either. Owned parts go towards the cost of your ship and add to the part-ex value, but also increases the insurance on them.

You cannot 'buy' loaned items.

Hope that's useful. :D

No it puts you by the star by design, to create a bottleneck in the route where people are more likely to meet each other, and also to ensure that you always have to do some traveling and can't just hyperspace from station to station.

The in-fiction explanation is that the FSD (Frameshift Drive) has to lock onto the strongest gravity source in the destination system, and that's always going to be the star. Also why in binary star systems, you'll always pop in next to the bigger of the two stars, regardless of where the stations are.

just for reference, I flew around for 3 hours last night trying to search for this "rouge signal" for a mission until I figured out that I am stupid and just went about randomly shooting targets and make some money. When another pilot didn't respond to my call for help, I had no choice but to shoot him down in his sidewinder. This was far more fun than actually doing the missions. :) Now I love this game... and the free sidewinders help too :p
