Newcomer / Intro newcomer questions on navigation and next ship

Hullo, question 1) How do you actually find starports or any docking places? do you need a scanner? do you use the scanner to find a place to dock or does it load everything automatically? this is something i don't understand, i can't go very far without a fuel scoop atm

also question 2) this kind of ties into number 1, firstly my current situation is that i have a sidewinder with no scanner and ive been travelling for a while and found no stations, do i need to turn back and find a station and get a scanner? i'm sure ive been travelling without a scanner before and stations and stuff were visible on new systems i travelled too, something to do with other players discovering them?

You should have a scanner by default with your first ship , but you need to add it to a Fire Group. Press button 4 to open the panel, then move over to Fire Groups and activate the scanner. However you don't need a scanner to find stations. Once you arrive in a system press button 1 to open the left hand panel. The stations will be listed for you and you select the one you want to go to with the space bar.

I recommend you have a look on You Tube for some tutorials as well, they are very useful for new players

This doesn't appear to be how it is for me. just to clarify, i have travelled quite a distance towards the centre of the galaxy, stations stopped appearing at some point, ive travelled maybe 15-20 jumps in a straight line and there hasnt been a single station listed in the nav panel, just the stars are listed. am i entering an empty zone or something? what's going on

You've left populated space.

Open the galaxy map and set the view option to "display by allegiance" - that will show you where the edge of populated space is so you can turn round.

Yes, all the human stations are within a couple hundred lightyears of Sol. At some time in the future there will be aliens out there. They may even be there already, but nobody has met any yet.

DB suggested there would be 'things' to discover in his webchat last Friday. I've started investigating signals in deep space, but not found anything yet. A warning though, even 400ly from sol, a Strong signal source turned out to be a pirate trap!
