Newcomer / Intro Newcomer - with issues

Hi,
I am fairly new to Elite Dangerous, have been playing just a couple of days really, although I played the original Elite in the early 80's and I must say that this is the game that Elite probably wanted to be but was limited by the available tech. at the time.

I have been having very regular issues with the connection dropping and the error saying that it couldn't connect to the matchmaking server.
I have raised a ticket with the dev's, who have had it since Sunday (probably Monday morning really), but have heard nothing as yet.
I can only seem to play for about 10 mins before the connection drops and it is getting frustrating, especially when doing missions.
Am i missing something, or is anyone else getting the same issues?

Regards

To contrast, I have yet to have any connection issues at all.
But that tells us nothing, network can be fickle.

Tried doing a traceroute from you to one of the servers?
It could be an routing issue from your ISP.

Welcome CMDR
I have seen a couple of posts like this on the forum. What method do you use to connect to your router? Wifi powerline ethernet?
Do you have anything else running in the background? Are there other users on your connection when you drop out?
Loads more to investigate but that will do for now.

I don't play particularly regularly, but i've only had one day where I've had this same issue when i got disconnected from the server. For about 5 minutes I couldn't connect after initializing the game but then it settled down.

I am the sole used of my internet connection so i know that it's not a connection fault at my end.

Are you getting this constantly, or is it periodic? If it's periodic it could be attributed to peak times at your exchange and an ADSL contention issue causing the dropouts. If it's constant this would indicate to me that it's some kind of routing or DNS resolution issue. It might be worth doing a ping -t <server IP address> from a cmd window and seeing what kind of latency you are getting between you and the server. Sorry but i don't know the address of the top of my head.

Try doing a check of your internet connection by running a speed test at www.speedtest.net. Last week I had a similar issue when my cable modem died on me. When I went to speedtest.net and checked, my download speed was way down from the usual number and the upload speed was not even registering on the test.. it just kept timing out. I called my cable provider and got the cable modem replaced and everything has been great as it was before I had the issue.

Also, check to make sure you don't have any settings in your router which would block p2p connections as Elite uses a lot of p2p for the gameplay.

Issues

Thanks to all of you for providing some feedback on my issue.

As yet I still do not know what the answer is, I will try to answer some of the queries raised:

I usually play it during the day, when there is no-one else in the house, so I should be getting most of the bandwidth.
I have run speedtest and am getting between 25-30mb download and between1.5 - 2mb upload.
This is not something that is happening now and again, I get this everytime that I play, I can usually get between 15-20 minutes before this happens, but it can be as little as 5 mins.
It does happen more when there are more people near or in the stations, but it still does it when there isn't.
I do not tend to have anything else running in the background.
I am running this through a powerline adapter.
I play other online games, but on my Xbox 1 or PS4 (sorry about that), but have no issues.
Other users in the house use consoles or PC's to play games without issue and all are using devolo powerline adapters
I run Avast antivirus.
I am on Windows 8, 8Gb ram, plenty of HD space, decent ish graphics card.

Thanks in anticipation.

Just a few things, If you started playing today the servers were having some problems after the 1.07 patch which should now be solved.

On top of that your antivirus could be the problem. Check if you can make an exception in the antivirus for Elite. If so then create the exception. If not you may want to see if turning off the antivirus helps (just while you play, obviously).

I have Avast - I had to make an exception - I usually have no problems at all once I have a connection but my broadband is much faster. Not sure who your provider is but that package looks like a Virgin Media package spec. I had terrible problems because Virgin throttle the up speed and ED is peer to peer so your upstream is pretty key. What I found was that the throughput was enough to trigger the throttle. I upgraded and have had no problems since.

I am not in for the rest of today so will have to try things out tomorrow.

Not sure how to put in the exception for Elite, I know where it should go but not sure what to enter (exe file or web address?)

I am on an unlimited usage package with talk talk. Not had any issues before but will look into the throttling thing.

Not tried solo play yet, was wanting the full experience.

I have been playing for about 5 days, mainly during the day for a couple of hours added up over a longer period ( because of the errors) had the issues since first day.

On a good note, I have had 4 attempted interdictions and got away each time. Realise my luck won't hold.

Thanks all for the suggestions, great to see a helpful forum. May see you out in the stars.

It might be worth doing a ping -t <server IP address> from a cmd window and seeing what kind of latency you are getting between you and the server. Sorry but i don't know the address of the top of my head.

You can see the server address from the main menu screen once you've logged in and connected. I like PingPlotter instead of a standard cmd window Ping or Tracert.

I have read about an issue similar to yours where powerline adapters were used. The firmware got updated in the adapters and it fixed the problem. Cant help with the post as I am on my cellphone but if you do a search here for 'powerline' it should pop up in the results.something to do with uPnP not 100% certain.
also ping times are atrocious with powerline adapters.

A friend of mine had a similar issue. After he sold his
PS4 & Xbox he never had any further problems.

Thanks for that, I assume that it was tongue in cheek. I see the advantages and disadvantages of each system (console or pc) and am lucky enough to be able to use either. I use different machines for different games and depending upon who else is in the house, ie, what I can get my hands on at the time.

Hi AH_ImADot, thanks for the help, I have tried pingplotter and not sure what it all means but am sure the red lines and packet loss can't be good. I have included an image, it would be great if you could put it into english for me if you can.

That's probably a red herring as I can't get a route to that particular server either and yet I have no issues playing the game at all.

I'd try direct without the powerline adapters in order to discount them, if possible. Depending on the adapter and your needs for it, wireless can be better. Some of the adapters are rubbish for maintaining good connectivity.

It doesn't respond to ICMP packages, aka PING.
Nothing to worry about.

Look at jitter, packetloss and latency.
Ignore 100% packetless, it's just the ICMP issue as I said before.

jitter is the difference in low and high ping. Basically, it means how much your latency jumps.
0 jitter would mean your latency is constant.

It looks fine on that chart, however it's very few samples.
You could easily have jitter on other times.

But it's a good indication it's not the route.
