General / Off-Topic NewEgg.com now ship to the UK

If you are in the UK and go to http://www.newegg.com/ you will notice the location is United Kingdom and prices are in pounds.

However, having done a couple of test baskets, it would seem that Shipping and Excise duty make them more expensive than local outlets.

Which is a shame.

We get so ripped off in the UK.. Its awful. I mean 20% VAT? WTH?

I'm surprised we don't get charged for breathing.

Seeing as they are a Californian company, it's obvious there would be hefty delivery charges and excise duty on top.

Newegg are a big American Retailer, with significant buying power. I was hoping their buying power would make their base pricing low enough to offset both shipping and Excise Duty.

But sadly not.

They'll want to make profit though, so even if they are priced well against US or UK suppliers, it'll still be more expensive with trans-atlantic delivery and UK taxes.

The days of really making savings by buying overseas has gone sadly. Unless you're buying a 99p iPhone charging cable from China ;)

In China, they pay their masks to breathe. In Europe, we could very well do the same in a few years. Pay to breathe !

Well, in Australia it's apparently still cheaper to buy an airline ticket head to America and pick up software in person from an American outlet than it is to buy locally. :p

You might try vendors from Hong Kong or South Korea like for example fasttech.com (free shipping world wide!). Not sure what they carry gaming related but generally these vendors from China don't give a **** about vats and taxes, and they are dirt cheap. I ordered two 2560x1440@96hz IPS monitors, had to pay VAT but was still incredibly cheap (300€).

They just declare the parcel as a gift worth $2. More often than not your parcel will be ignored and just arrive. In Germany wares below 25€ are free of VAT. Personal electronics are also tariff free in Germany. So maybe you will have to pay vat, maybe you won't.

The downside is that shipping might take a long time and returns of broken equipment is problematic. They usually only cover dead on arrival.

Had a look on newegg and prices seem ok but as mentioned with taxes etc..

BTW should I change the thread title to "Those Thieving Goverment Swines taxing the living hell out of us every opportunity they damn well get!!!"?

:D

Knock yourself out TJ - I doubt you'll see many complaints here. :)

One thing I noticed is that most of the stuff on NewEgg whilst it has a UK price and lets you view it, it will not ship to the UK for one reason or another. This is particularly true for computer gear. It's a very annoying site to navigate as a result, as you don't know until you get down to the detail of the item that it's unavailable to purchase in the UK.

I prefer EBuyer.
